chains, David MacGillivray is bringing
his wealth of knowledge and experience
to Selkirk College.
This autumn, Selkirk College welcomes
MacGillivray to its faculty as a new fulltime instructor for the Resort and Hotel
Management (RHOT) and Post Graduate Hospitality Management programs.
MacGillivray arrives to the West Kootenay after an impressive career with
Fairmont Hotel and Resorts. The industry giant brings experience in all aspects
of hotel operations including rooms division, food and beverage, culinary arts,
conference services, catering, premium
residential operations and golf course
operations.
I will also bring great stories, a sense of fun, and far
too many examples of what will happen if you dont plan
properly, he says with humour.

Guitar Concert
To Benefit Kaslo Guitarfest
On Wednesday, July 20, 7 pm at the Langham Cultural

Centre come for an evening of classical guitar music in
a concert to benefit Kaslo GuitarFest 2016. The program
will feature works for solo guitar as well as some ensembles played by Arija Cyr, David Stewart, Kepler Zuk and
others. Admission is by your generous donation and will
help to balance the budget for this attractive addition to
summer arts programming in Kaslo.
The festival itself takes place from Friday, August 15 to
Wednesday, August 20 in St. Andrews United Church as
well as the Langham Cultural Centre with three public
concerts during the week. In addition, Selkirk College is
offering a program for beginners under the direction of
Rita Deane to be held for an hour and a half each morning during the festival.

Even though the week can feel like an endless stream of

preparations, theres one prep time most of us are missing - sleep prep. Research shows that 67% of Canadians
wish they could get a better sleep, but they cant seem to
figure out how. Experts recommend adding a wind-down
routine to your schedule to help your brain adjust to sleep

helpful tips for a healthy bedtime routine to get those

1. Lay out your pjs: Laying out your pyjamas and even

2. Power down technology: Its all too common we

3. Avoid evening stimulants: Although everyone

before bed. If youre having trouble getting to sleep at
night, consider drinking less coffee or tea in the late afternoon and evening. Also, try to schedule any vigorous
workouts earlier in the day.
4. Create a consistent bed time: Having a consistent
bedtime and wake-up time is important when trying to
get a good nights sleep. Your body will start to adjust to
these set times, making it easier to fall asleep at night and
easier to get out of bed in the mornings.

WHO THEY LIVE WITH COUNT?
When a family breaks up, parents often fight
about which one of them the kids should
live with. Various sharing arrangements are
often made about custody, guardianship and
parenting, but that still leaves the question
about the kids primary residence. Usually,
each parent thinks the kids would be better
off living with them.
What counts, though, isnt the beliefs of the
parties about whos the better parent, but
what is in the best interest of the children.
That is the fundamental rule under both
our federal law (the Divorce Act) and our
provincial law (the Family Law Act).
So what about the kids views do they
matter?
Under our laws, unless its inappropriate
(for example, the child is 2 years old), the
views of the child or children is one of the
factors a court must consider when deciding
whats in their best interests. But its by no
means the only factor, nor is it typically the
deciding one. The older and more mature
the child (a teenager, say), the more that
childs views will likely count.
Putting kids on the stand in an intimidating court room setting isnt normally the
best way to find out their views. Instead, its
often better to obtain a Hear the Child or
a Views of the Child report. These types
of reports can provide useful insight on
whether the kids have a strong, weak or
even no preference as to who they want to
stay with.
Typically these reports are prepared by a

neutral interviewer like a lawyer or mental
health professional who can put a child at
ease and ask questions informally in ageappropriate ways.
A Hear the Child report involves no
assessment, and the childs views can be
obtained quickly and for a lower cost. With
a Views of the Child report, the mental
health professional may also assess the
childs needs or views.
In a recent case, the parents had split up
after a 15-year relationship. They had two
kids, a 13-year old girl and an 11-year old
boy. After two years of both parents living
in the same city post-split, the mom moved
a bit further away to live with a new partner.
The dad went to court and asked that the
kids primary residence be with him.
The court looked at the various factors as
to what would be best for the kids. In a
Views of the Child report, the 13-year old
girl expressed a strong preference to live
with her dad, while her 11-year old brother
had a slight preference the same way. There
were other good reasons favouring this, like
keeping both children in the same school
theyd been attending, the fact the 13-year
old girl didnt get on too well with her
moms new partner, and more.
But in part because of the kids views, the
court decided their primary residence
should be with their dad.

Internment Karate Camp
Everyone is aware of how the Canadian Government

responded to Japans bombing of Pearl Harbour on
December 7, 1941 - shamefully all Japanese-Canadians
were denied their rights and possessions and were herded
into internment centres.
The interior of BC held most of them. Canadas most
famous Karate-Ka, Masami Tsuruoka, was interned in
Rosebery with his Family and its thanks to his work that
karate is where and what it is today in Canada and North
America. Born on Vancouver Island, Masami was taken
to live his childhood in Roseberry, Beautiful today maybe
but without electricity or Natural Gas anyone from here
can tell you the winters are not very nice and 70 years ago
winter was very different. After dropping the Atomic bomb
, twice, on August 4th and 6th 1945 the war with Japan
ended and eventually so did the internment . Masami and
his family moved back to Japan to start anew, and while
in their new town Kumamoto he saw a man demonstrating the Okinawan art of Karate, Tsuyoshi Chitose the last
grandmaster of Tode and founder of Chito Ryu Karate.
Tode was a term for Chinese Way or method and it incorporated all the 5 current major Karate Styles into one and
he was the last living person to have ever accomplished this.
You see Karate as a word didnt exist until 1921 while
Tode reaches back to 527 and the Shao Lin Monastery.
Masami was decided, he would train in Karate and he
trained until his Ni Dan and in 1956 he moved back to
Canada to introduce Karate to North America. Even in
1956 he wasnt allowed to live west of the Rockys and
Moved to Toronto where from a small apartment and
3 students Millions of people now enjoy the benefits of
Martial Arts Training. Sensei Tsuruoka started the first
systemic Karate instruction in North America in 1958.
Due to the Nature of Karate and how Assault in the Criminal Code of Canada is he decided that Sport Karate was
the safest way to practice Karate without fear of litigation in case of injury or even Death so they created the
National Karate Association ( now Karate Canada ) which
is endorsed and recognised by the Canadian Government as the official organised Governing Body in charge
of Karate in Canada with its Provincial sporting organisations supporting them. He organized the first Karate
Competitions in Canada, and was the Referee in Chuck
Norriss World Championship Match we all know Chuck
and another famous Chinese-American named Bruce Lee
wrote to Masami seeking help in learning about the North
American Culture and how

The world was blessed with Barb Anderson August 23, 1933
and Heaven was blessed upon her arrival June 21, 2016. Barb was
a wonderful addition to the Salmo area. There wasnt a person she
didnt meet and have a chat with. She loved Salmo and the people.
Her favorite thing was to purposefully go out for a walk with the
intention of meeting people. Barb and her little dog Annie were
well known. Barb was a member of the Victory Church in Salmo,
she was a resident of the Salmo Seniors Villa. She was a mom,
sister, aunt, grandma and a beautiful friend to many. Her daughters
were with her when she said goodbye. A family goodbye was held
June 27, 2016. Her favourite sayings were always I loveth thee muchly, I cover you in the blood of Jesus
and Theres no God like Jehovah! The family would like to send a special thank you to the Rosewood Village
staff for loving her and making her last days special. Barb Anderson, we loveth thee muchly!

At Nelson Library
Summer blooms glorious at the library in stunning fabric paintings by Nelson artist Kate Bridger. Five flower
portraits are delicately rendered, resulting in a surprisingly painterly take on petal, leaf, and glass.
Kate has been a practicing fabric artist since the early
1980s. Over the years she has invented, refined and experimented with materials, subject matter, and techniques,
allowing her to portray landscapes, streetscapes, wildlife,
abstracts, architecture and a variety of subject matter in
meticulous detail.
Her summertime library exhibition, Kate says, is inspired
in part by the beautiful work of (Nelson florist) Bellafloras
talented owner and floral artist, Kyla. I began working on a
few everlasting flower arrangements earlier this year.
These paintings, titled Everlasting Arrangements #1 and

#2, are joined by fabric renditions of sunflowers, gerberas,
and a tipsy rose.
Kate creates each bloom individually, using carefully
chosen fabrics and stitch techniques in an effort to recreate the flowers unique properties.
Fabric is a fabulous medium to work with because it
provides instant texture: it can be layered to create subtle
shading and depth, she says. Perhaps best of all, it is a
relatively unstable medium and its fickleness and unpredictability often lead me down paths I had not foreseen.
Kates work shows through July and August.

The West Kootenay EcoSociety operates MarketFest as a
project to promote a relocalization of our economy and to
create a meeting place for arts, culture and community networking. EcoSociety is able to put on Marketfest and its other
markets due to generous funding from the Columbia Basin
Trust, the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce, Nelson and District Credit Union as well as help from numerous
other local businesses including The Kootenay Coop, Still
Eagle, The Savoy Hotel, Mountain Baby and many more. The
EcoSociety also runs the Saturday Cottonwood Community
Market at Cottonwood Falls Park and the Wednesday Nelson
Downtown Local Market on the 400 block of Baker Street.

The Capitol Theatres 28th annual Summer Youth Program is excited to present the irresistible family musical
about the trials and triumphs of Joseph Joseph And The
Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Israels favorite son on
Thursday, July 21 to Saturday, July 23. Joseph, his fathers
favourite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams.
When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and
taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in
which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged.
He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances
from Potiphars wife lands him in jail.
When news of Josephs gift to interpret dreams reaches the
Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is
well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find
themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed
but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph
reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the
sons of Israel. Retelling the Biblical story of Joseph, his
eleven brothers and the coat of many colors, this magical
musical is full of unforgettable songs including: Those
Canaan Days, Any Dream Will Do, Go, Go Go Joseph
and Close Every Door and a cornucopia of musical styles,
from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and
rock n roll. This Old Testament tale emerges both timely
and timeless.
This first collaboration of Andrew Lloyd Webber (Jesus
Christ Superstar, Phantom of the Opera, Cats) and Tim
Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar, The Lion King), Joseph and the
Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat blends pop, country and
rock into an uplifting, technicolor story of biblical proportions and is one of the most enduring shows of all time.
This colorful retelling of the biblical story about Joseph,
his prophetic dreams, his wondrous adventures and his
designer coat sings out to young and old alike.
Performances are scheduled for Thursday, July 21, Friday, July 22 and Saturday, July 23 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, July 23 at 2 pm. Tickets are $15/adult, $10/student
