SAB 1023
-1Q1.

(a)

Briefly explain the purpose of arithmetic and accuracy checks in

levelling.
(4 marks)

(b)

A automatic level, which has been in storage for a long time, is to be

used for a levelling job. In order to ascertain the condition of the level,
a two peg test was performed between points A and B which are 50
metres apart. Table Q1(a) lists the staff readings obtained.

Calculate the collimation error of the level per 50 metres of sight.

(13 marks)

(c)

If the level was then used to determine the reduced level of a TBM,
determine the corrected staff readings and the reduced level of the
TBM based on the data given in Table Q1(b). Unequal sight distances
were unavoidable and assume that accuracy check is not required.

(a)

Give three examples of random errors in traversing. Briefly explain

how these errors could be minimised in the field?
(6 marks)

(b)

Figure Q2 shows a linked traverse 123 which was established to set-out

(mark) the position of a proposed building. Stations A and B were used
as bearing references. Using the data given in Table Q2, calculate the
linear misclosure of the traverse.
(8 marks)

(13 marks)

(c)

Figure S2 shows a schematic diagram of a levelling work conducted

between BM J7812 (RL 23.339m) and BM J7725 (RL 24.846m). The
distance between these bench marks is 370 metres. Book these
readings and determine the reduced levels of all points. Perform the
necessary checks.

(c)

and the coordinates of the building corners P and Q are (527.576m N,
553.285m E) and (507.576m N, 553.285m E) respectively, calculate
the bearings and distances of 1 P and 3 Q.

(a)

By using a suitable diagram, describe the steps needed to observe

details using the radiation method.

(b)

An existing stormwater drain is to be deepened to ease the episodes of

flash floods during heavy rain. A detail survey using a total station
(face left) was conducted along the centreline (invert level) of the drain
to obtain its longitudinal section. Table Q3 lists the data observed.
Calculate :-

i.

The invert levels of the centreline points 1 to 8

(12 marks)

ii.

The horizontal distance of the drain

(a)

State three factors that are considered in the geometrical designs of

circular curves.
(5 marks)

(b)

As the site engineer for a housing project, you were asked to set-out
the centreline of a circular curve that connects two straights within the
housing area. If the data is as follows:-

Degree of a curve

= 30o

Chord interval

= 10 meter

Chainage of intersection point

= 3221.62 m

Coordinate of stations :
a

1304.345 N , 4987.562 E

1983.703 N , 5496.254 E

1876.497 N , 6003.650 E

1891.566 N , 6026.224 E

(Note: Stations a and b are points on the first straight meanwhile

stations y and z are on the other straight.)

Calculate:i)

Radius of circular curve.

(5 marks)

ii)

Intersection angle.
(5 marks)

iii)

The setting out data for this circular curve.

(b)

During a reconnaissance work for a road construction, it is evident that

the proposed alignment will cross a valley whose falling and rising
grades are -3.4% (p) and 4.1% (q) respectively. Given the following
data :
