Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus was Praying. What a powerful example for us! He knew this was the way to
stay connected to God the Father and handle all the demands being placed on Him.
Jesus assures us if we put God first we will receive and find whatever we need from
His infinite goodness and wisdom. But, we must make the time to stop, listen and
seek God first in prayer. Pope Francis reminds us moments of family prayer and acts
of devotion can be more powerful for evangelization than any catechism class or
sermon. Make prayer a daily part of your family routine.
Please pray for our Sick especially: John Baylock, Joseph Benear, Betty Bartel, Jack

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord!

320 Holy Hours were kept before the Blessed Sacrament this past week.
(Continuing Testimony from a night adorer): I was self-righteous and even
indifferent and critical of others. My circumstances forced me to consider my
condition. Because I was always so sure of myself, I never stopped to consider
my actions, but then I was forced to deal with them. Each of us would detour around
trouble, strife and difficulty if we knew they were coming. So many times we do not
recognize our present condition until it envelops us. Too many times we do not
consider our condition until it is too late. These troubles brought on by our own
neglect and selfish interests allow others to misdirect us. This was my plight. Even
with self-made difficulties, or any difficulties, Christ can make us grow stronger in our
relationship with Him if we accept them with love and patience. Be a Holy Hour
Adorer, what else is there? For more information contact Mary Jane Gardner at 330753-9979.
Are you sensing restlessness in life? Does it seem like God may be calling you to a
deeper relationship that is totally new or different from the one you are living in your
current faith tradition? Is God calling you to be a Roman Catholic? Join us in the St.
Augustine Rectory Meeting Room for the first of two inquiry nights; Monday August 1
or Monday, August 22 beginning at 7:00pm. There you will find out more about
answering the call to become a member of the Roman Catholic Church through the

R.C.I.A. Process (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), contact Fr. Bill Browne or Fr.
David Majikas at 330-745-0011 if you are interested in attending either session.

CULTURE OF LIFE - Beginning with the Supreme Court decision banning prayer from public school
classrooms in 1964, and continuing with Roe-V-Wade legalizing abortion at all gestational stages in 1973
to the multitude of moral issues currently being settled in the highest court of the land we have been
steadily slipping from One Nation Under God" to becoming a nation under secular atheism. As we try
to understand the violence that is gripping our country it would do us all well to recall the Biblical
standard "by their fruits you shall know them" and ask ourselves what fruits have these changes
brought? However imperfect we may be as Christians it is the struggle towards the" Imitation of Christ"
that civilizes mankind. The more we have renounced God and the standards set forth in the Ten
Commandments the more barbaric we have become. As I ponder these facts and try to make sense of it
all I am reminded of the great French philosopher Alexis De Tocqueville who visited our country in 1931
to observe and learn what magical qualities America possessed to enable such a small group of people
to defeat the mighty British Empire twice in 35 years. "He looked for the greatness of America in her
harbors and rivers, her fertile fields and boundless forests, mines and other natural resources. He
studied America's schools, her Congress, and her matchless Constitution without comprehending
America's power. Not, until he went into the churches of America and heard pulpits 'aflame with
righteousness' did he understand the secret of her genius and strength. De Tocqueville returned to

France and wrote: 'America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good,
America will cease to be great.' John Stormer, Death of a Nation, 1968. St. Augustine Culture of Life
meets the First Tuesday of every month in the rectory following the 5:15 Mass, all are invited to accept
the challenge of St. Pope John Paul II to build a new Culture of Life. For more information contact Lynn
