Vision
That His Word might reach all the people.
Judy and tfcle Porter
The month of January, with all its many activities, was unlike any period of time that I have experi
enced in my entire life. With this newsletter, I hope to share with you some of the best, and perhaps the
worst news that a person could possibly hear. I find one scripture continually becoming more real in recent
days: ''We know that in everything God works for good with those who love Him,"
I mentioned in the last newsletter the plans for the leadership and family camps at the El Tabo, Chile
property during the month of February. What I failed to mention is that the camp is not typical of summer
church camps that churches at home are associated with. This is a leadership camp for developing Chilean
nationals to improve, or to take leadership roles. Leaders and future leaders from age 18 to 45 took part in
themselves.
1st CABIN COMPLETED (DECEMBER 1975)
The El Tabo camp could be called "God's Miracle", as indeed many last minute preparations really
showed God's hand at work. A year ago this tree farm was nothing more than hills, valleys, and eucalyptus
trees. Today two cabins, a chapel-dining hall, bathrooms, and a water system have been set up to accomodate the students and teachers.
JUDY'S NOTES
While working at El Tabo, the first week of January, the Lord sent us a
messenger from Santiago. The messenger was a Chilean Christian brother who
rode the bus from Santiago, then walked 6 miles to deliver the special message that
told us that our first baby was waiting for us. Dale and I packed and left that even
ing.
The next day, we were the happy parents of a 6 lb. 2 1/2 02. baby boy whom
we call Scotty. We thank the Lord for this precious blessing. For this reason, we
also received a two week visit from my mother.
JANUARY TRAGEDY
Overshadowing all the news of our new son, the classes in Puente Alto, and the preparation for the
Leader's Camp was the loss of our dear friend, co-worker and brother in Christ. In the midst of all the fi
nal-week preparations for camp a call was received from the Chilean police informing us that a car-motorscooter accident had just recently occured and had taken the life of missionary, Ed Mills. Only hours or
even minutes earlier, he had been busily working on his classes for camp, discussing plans and ideas, and
trying to work out the problems involved in purchasing a house in Santiago. He is now with the Lord.
All of us who worked with Ed feel a great loss in our hearts when we think of being without his help,
encouragement, example, ideas, and insights, from which all of us have gained so much in the past. However
we do not doubt God's wisdom in this matter, we only pray He will raise up others to take his place in the
times ahead. Ed and I worked together long hours over a booklet to help convince others of the need to work
in mass communications in South America. I would like to share a segment that he wrote from this booklet,
Recruits to Chile, (pp. 36-38). Perhaps it will challenge you or at least inspire you to challenge others to
consider working in the modern mission field.
''We do not face the same situation in missions now that the pioneers of the modern missionary move
ment did one hundred fifty years ago... Those who were able to overcome their fear of snakes and tigers and
to give up most of life's conveniences to go to primitive tribes in the upper Amazon are to be commended...
But this type of field is disappearing from our world. The new battlefield is in the city. This is where the
people are, and the ones who don't live there already are moving there quickly. The dangerous and difficult
mission field in our age is the jungle of congrete and steel, filled with wild people and wilder ideas...Our na
tive American sense of efficiency and the Scriptures give us ample reasons to believe that our churches
should be sending our best men to and using our best methods in the cities. We must use the men and meth
ods that can accomplish the most good and reach the largest number of people for the least investment of time
and money... The mathematics of the rate of church growth in comparison to world population growth shows
us one thing: we cannot even dream of world evangelism if we maintain our present rate of progress and con
tinue using our cur r ent methods...To reverse the s ituation, we des perately need men of faith like Paul who
are willing to spend and be spent for the sake of the Gospel, men who are willing to try new methods of evan
gelism, men who are willing to attempt for God things which they cannot possibly do... We need men of faith
who can conquer the curse of thinking small when we have a God so great. Give us men of faith who will at
tempt great things for God, things that require more strength, more resources, and more wisdom than they
possibly have on their own. Then, give us men of faith who will let their lives be spent so that big ideas
might become wonderful realities."

SCOTTY AT 3 MONTHS
In February, the first session of the "El Encuentro" Bible Institute was held at Camp Emanuel in
El Tabo, Chile. As I mentioned in our last newsletter
Santiago in Antofagasta, and 600 miles to the south in Osorno. Another Chilean plans to operate extension clas
ses in the coastal city of Valpraiso. We feel that this entire program of instruction will be the answer to train
ing 50 to 60 Chilean leaders, that they in turn, "might be able to teach others also". (II Tim. 2;2)
Since the death of brother Ed Mills, I have taken charge of the young church that meets in the house of

age, and we usually have between 6 and 11 people present.
particularly the Psalms and the Beatitudes. On Sunday, each of them repeats what he was able to learn the week
before. Often they really amaze me. (When was the last time you memorized an entire Psalm?) Also, each
week one of them gives a devotional over one chapter out of the New Testament, such as James or Phillipians.
Other than the fact that I sort of keep things going, and offer a Bible lesson each week, they handle the entire
service. This is already an indication to me that within a few months, when their numbers have increased, they
could be more or less "put on their own" as is the goal with all our newly established churches.
On Saturdays, and when possible during the week, we have been.makibg personal calls on the students
and graduates of the Bible course at El Encuentro. Miguel Amigo (one of the up-and-coming leaders in the
San Bernardo group) and I have called on 35 to 40 people in the last few weeks, which has resulted in the for-
the harvest", we feel confident that God will "give the increase" of
several new souls into His Kingdom. Pray for this!

AND MATTHE\^PORTE] J
Judy, Scotty and I left Santiago, Chile June 5, 1976 headed for the United States. (Actually, Matthew was
along too, but he wasn't required to carry a passport. ) The few days and weeks before this day had been spent
in hurried preparations in many different areas: I finished up final tapings for the El Encuentio "Extension"
Bible Institute. These tapes were sent to those studying the Bible Institute Classes outside of Santiago, thus
multiplying the outreach and effectiveness of the Institute. Of course, much time was spent in packing. Weeks
in advance we put things up for sale, stored things in boxes, and tried to get things rearranged. Well, we made
It, although sometimes I'm not quite sure how. The other missionaries were a great help. Some of our Chilean
friends pitched in, and that really helped also. Probably the most frustrating and time-consuming business was
that of "Red Tape". Scotty, having been born in Chile, was considered a "dual national" and so needed two pass
ports, which really added to the problems. But, things have a way of working out, and we left on schedule, and
in one piece (I think).
On our return flight to the U.S. we stopped over in Costa Rica to visit our good friends and co-missionaries,
Chris and Carol DeWelt. Chris originally began the work in San Bernardo, and helped organize the first church.
Ed Mills took over when Chris left on furlough in 1975 until his death in January. I then taught classes there and
worked closely with Miguel (one of Chris' converts) calling on students and setting up contacts. Chris was in
Costa Rica brushing up on his Spanish and getting ready to return to Chile when we visited them. Reports are
that after Chris returned to San Bernardo, the work has really boomed, resulting in several new converts to
Christ. Miguel baptized one of his best friends into Christ, even though he's been a Christian only about a year.
Plans are to have one or two more churches established in this area, before the end of the year.
VISIT 13 CHURCHES
From July through September I was able to visit 13 churches in four states, traveling about 3315 miles.
All of these churches have had a part in the mission work over the last 2 years and I would like to mention them
at this time. Crockett Mills Christian Church and 1st Christian (Newbern), both in Tennessee. Milford Christian
Church, (Milford),Rinehart Christian Church,(Hunce), Granby Christian Church, (Granby) and 1st Christian Church
(Grandview); all in Missouri. Then I saw the brethern at Southside Christian, (Pryor)^ Davis Park Christian
Church, (Enid), East Bartlesville Christian, (Bartlesville), Mission Christian, (Sand Springs), and the Central
Christian, (Claremore), churches in Oklahoma. Also I had the opportunity to visit the Olathe Christian Church
and talk to a youth rally in Baxter Springs, both in Kansas,

within a few days after he came home, we noticed he had an eating problem, and
was not able to keep down the milk as he ate it.
The Chilean Vision Mission of Dale and Judy Pbrter as s-pdnsTsired-by-^ie-^astB^^rtlesville Christian Church
will officially be non-existent as of October 31, 1976. Hopefully, the books will be closed and no more gifts will
be received on behalf of this work. Should there be any excess funds, as it now looks like those will not, they will
be sent to someone not actively involved in Chilean Evangelism. Judy and I finished our two year internship in
Chile, deciding it was not the Lord's will that we return.
What now? Well, we had thought that we had known what we were going to do, where we were headed twice
now, but the Lord has closed those doors. We Do Not Know! I am currently looking into various located mini
stries as I have knowledge and experience in both a minister's and an associate minister's position. But so far,
nothing has worked out.

A FINAL CHALLENGE
We would like to thank all of our friends who helped make the "Chilean
Vision" experience worthwhile and successful. We would encourage you to pick
out one of the following recruits who are just now entering the Chilean field,
and support one of them, as you did us in 1974 through 1976.
