Downloader for Windows 7 and 8.1
Posted 08 April 2015 17:31 CEST by Jan Willem Aldershoff
Users that want to remove the KB3035583 Windows 10 downloader update from their Windows 7 and
Windows 8.1 installation can take several steps to get rid of the update. The Windows 10 downloader
update is installed as recommended update KB3035583 and adds a /Windows/System32/GWX folder to
the system. The folder contains GWX.exe which has the description Get Windows 10.

(Dutch version of Windows 8.1 Windows 10 downloaden (download Windows 10) clear visible as file
description)
Once the update is installed it will notify the user of different phases of Windows 10 availability. E.g when
Microsofts upcoming operating system nears its release, the update will add a Tile to the Homescreen and
a notification icon in the system tray urging the user to update to Windows 10.
Although the KB3035583 update is Recommended by Microsoft and therefore requires users to manually

when new updates are available to the user. Some users even report that the update became Important
by the end of March and was therefore automatically installed with other updates on users that allow
Windows to automatically download and install updates.
Knowing what the update now actually is about, users might want to learn how to remove it from their
system.

How to uninstall KB3035583

In order to find out whether the update is installed see the instructions for Windows 7 here, or Windows 8
here. If Update for Microsoft Windows (KB3035583) is in the list with the status message successful
then GWX is installed on your PC.
There are two steps to remove KB3035583 from your computer, the first step is described here for
Windows 7 and here for Windows 8. and involves uninstalling an update. In this case make sure you
remove the KB3035583 update and not accidently another one. After a few seconds the update is be
removed and your computer doesnt need to restart.
On some systems the file GWX.exe remains in /Windows/SysWOW64. To remove that file, you need to
take ownership of the folder, a description of an easy way can be found here, a method that requires some
more work can be found here. Once youve taken ownership, you can delete the GWX.exe file.
In order to make sure Windows doesnt install KB3035583 again with the next round of updates, uncheck
Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates. This will make sure the
update will be listed under the Optional updates and no longer automatically install.
If you want the update to disappear entirely, right-click the update and choose Hide Update in the
contextual menu of the KB3035583 update. Now you should be be saved from the notifications, dont forget
to read our site to know when Windows 10 is ready to install.

@Rufman - Add Full Control permission to the "Administrators" and "Users" group in the Security tab. That
allowed me to remove GWX that was previously blocked.

This worked for me. THANK YOU! Now just waiting to see if it comes back.
This has not been any kind of pleasant, having Microsoft bombard me with this notification, I'm reacting as
if it is a VIRUS!
Q: is Microsoft Corp. so desperate for sales of GWX they deliberately made this notification so persistent?
Or are they just that arrogant & tyrannical?

Thanks for posting this guide, although I had uninstalled the KB3035583 before I found your site, an
obvious method of removing the Win 10 upgrade. BUT I was not aware of the GWX folder in the System32
folder, thanks for that!
After I had initially allowed KB3035583 to be installed, I noticed the time it took for Windows to cold boot
increased substantially. After the desktop appeared, it seemed (was) unresponsive for ~one minute. That
is, clicking on a program would result in apparently nothing happening, and after the interval I mentioned,
the program's UI would appear. That behavior was unknown prior to installing this update. The PC uses a
Z97 mother board, an Intel Xeon E3 v3 processor, a Samsung SM951 OS drive, running Win 8.1 in UEFI
booting mode.
After removing KB3035583, the delay in Windows booting and unresponsive desktop has disappeared. I
don't recall reading in the comment of this and the Update for Windows 7 and 8.1 silently installs Windows
10 downloader article, about others experiencing this. I may be jumping the gun on the "fix" I think
occurred, or did anyone experience a similar thing?
If you think my delay in Windows startup caused by KB3035583 theory is correct, what is happening during
that time? The config.xml script running, and communicating with the MS servers? I was in the Reservation
phase when I removed KB3035583.

I created a small utility that removes "Get Windows 10" components (including KB3035583) and that can
disable trackers too.
It can also restore previously disabled updates that would prevent a user from seeing the "Get Windows 10
upgrade" icons and application.
It's named "Win10wiwi (Windows 10 when I want it).
It's free.
It's simple (one click).
It's here:

I've been trying to rid my system of the GWX irritant for days now. I thought I had removed it, but signs of it
are still there (the icon listed as "hidden" on the taskbar, the message to upgrade to Win 10 in the View
Updates section, etc.). I read your instructions with interest, but I have a problem; the GWX files on my
system are not located in either the System32 folder or the SysWOW64 folder. Instead, I've located 14
individual files in winsxs.
Attempts to change permissions keep failing. The computer simply will not let me touch those files. I would
appreciate help in getting rid of this parasite. Even without opening the program to install the OP, it's
playing havoc with my system.
Thanks

So what O/S are you using? Did you try to uninstall those packages and then run the Regedit so it install
correctly? I think you have more problem if the Regedit file isn't being placed in the right location.
Otherwise you might have to turn on the hidden Admin account from the Owner account by using the
Command Prompt but use the option "RUN as Admin" that way you can turn on the Admin account.
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...windows-vista/
net user administrator /active:yes --- turns it on
net user administrator /active:no --- turns if off
This turns on the Admin account and try to install the Regedit again.

My O/S is Win 7. I recently had a hard drive meltdown and brought the computer to a repair shop, where
they fixed and reinstalled everything. The absolute last thing I am prepared to do is an uninstall of my O/S
by myself.
FYI, the buttons to change privileges are all inactive. Prior to the meltdown, I had no trouble ridding the
GWX file from my system and keeping it out. Now, I can't get rid of it; the files just seem to hide in other

Sounds like they screwed up your installation. If this was a Factory computer you should've had the
Restore disc or be able to order them and have the shop Restore it to the proper setup but if this was
custom then the shop didn't do the job right. And your going to have to ask them what did they mess up on
the installation? So is this a Factory computer?

I think this is related to how the shop did the repair or didn't do it properly and caused your O/S corruption
rather then fixing it.

My computer is a custom build. I do have the disk, but the shop didn't use it. I assumed every Win 7
installation disk was like every other (aside from the pro or home version detail). I'm getting other issues
now: The router keeps disconnecting, the wallpaper changed for no reason, links in my email client
wouldn't connect to my browser. I think I'll have to have a conversation with my repair guy tomorrow.
Thanks.

This is what I find problematic if they installed your Windows 7 properly this shouldn't be a problem. I have
Window 7x64 Ult Sp1 a retail version and did my own self installation and can use the Regedit files without
any problems. This is why I find it odd that you can't use it without problems.

I am running windows 8 64 bit and was able to successfullyuninstall the updates but am unable to change
permissions on the
"TrustedInstaller"
in order to delete the VERY UNWANTED GWX.exe and associated files in my
System32 folder. I would like to bill triple my rate for my time spent
trying to make sure I do NOT get Windows10.
Can someone please tell me the best way to get rid of the trusted installer
(which has
already reconfigured my Norton's Security) and the GWX garbage?
Thank you!!

I have yet to see that go anywhere...remember the moment you install and use Windows you agreed to MS
policies regardless of what you think-that's the Catch-22. And if you didn't look at my post #9 to disable
those Nags then you aren't trying to see what others have posted for solutions.
