Tutorial 1
1) A Y-connected three phase supply with 4157-V rms (line to line) is applied to a
balanced Y-connected three-phase load consisting of three identical impedances of
4836.87o . Taking the phase to neutral voltage Van as reference, calculate
a) The phasor currents in each line
b) The total active and reactive power supplied to the load
2) Repeat the above problem with the same three-phase impedances arranged in
connection. Take Vab as reference.
3) A balanced three phase load is connected to a 4.16 kV (line to line) three phase four
wire grounded-Y dedicated distribution feeder. The load can be modeled by an
impedance of Z L 5 j13 / phase , Y connected. The line impedance is
Z line 0.3 j 0.8. Using the phase a to neutral as a reference, calculate the
following:
a) Line currents for phase a, b and c
b) Line to neutral voltages for all three phase at the load
c) Apparent, active and reactive power dissipated per phase and for all three
phases in the load.
d) Active power losses per phase and for all three phases in the line impedance .
4) A balanced Y-connected load is connected at the end of a three phase generator as
shown in Figure Q1. The line impedance is Zline = 0.12 + j0.09 . The total power to
the balanced load is 6912 Watts and the phase voltage at the load is 120 Volts. Using
the single phase equivalent circuit, calculate:
(a) The phase current at the load, Ia
(b) The generator phase voltage, EAN and the generator line voltage, EBC.
Notes: i) Assume positive sequences and select Van at the load as reference.
ii) All the answers must be in polar form (magnitude and angle) and in 2 decimal
places.
