ABSTRACT
Sustainability in concrete production can be attained by innovations in substitutions of
material used. Cement is one the principal constituent in the production of the concrete.
Innovations are much needed to meet the increasing demand for new and quality materials.
Use of Hazardous industrial waste in concrete making will leads to make environment
greener as it leads in the reduction of emitting huge amounts of carbon-dioxide gas into
atmosphere by replacing cement with waste material. The use of huge amount of aggregate
due to excessive production of concrete results in deficiency of natural resources, so an
alternate material is required to replace natural aggregates.
This work was conducted to explore the feasibility of the substitution of waste marble
powder for cement and waste tile aggregates for natural coarse aggregates to attain economy
in construction and making environment healthier. The properties which were checked,
include the workability, Compressive strength, Split Tensile Strength and Flexural Strength
Test of Concrete. For this purpose, an experimental programme was planned in which ten
mixes with different combinations of waste marble powder and waste tile aggregate was
prepared. OPC was partially replaced with waste marble powder at 5%, 10% and 15%,
whereas natural coarse aggregate was partially replaced with crushed tile aggregates at 15%,
30% and 45%. The water cement ratio of the mix was kept constant at 0.45. To determine
compressive strength of concrete mix, cubes of size 150 mm x 150 mm x 150 mm were
prepared and tested after the period of 7 and 28 days of water curing. To determine split
tensile strength and flexural strength, for each mix, cylinders of size 100 mm diameter and
200 mm height and beam of 100 mm x 100 mm x 500 mm were casted and tested after 28
days of curing period.
The results of all tests performed on concrete mix have been presented in the form of
figures and tables. It has been observed from the results that as the partial replacement of
cement by waste marble powder and natural coarse aggregates by crushed tile aggregates in
concrete mix increases, the workability of concrete mix was found to decrease as compared
to control mix. For Compressive strength, the maximum value of compressive strength of
concrete mix having waste marble powder replacement of 10% and crushed tile aggregate
replacement of 30% was 24.10 MPa for 7 days and 36.27 MPa for 28 days. In case of split
tensile strength, the partial replacement of cement and coarse aggregates with waste marble
powder and crushed tile aggregates in concrete mix results in slight increase of split tensile

strength at 10% and 30% replacement as compared to control mix. The partial replacement of
cement with waste marble powder at 10% and coarse aggregates with crushed tile aggregates
at 30% in concrete mix results in similar flexural strength as compared to control mix. The
study indicates that the partial replacement of waste marble powder upto 10% of cement and
waste crushed tile aggregates upto 30% of natural coarse aggregates was found to be the most
appropriate mix based on the compressive strength, tensile strength and flexural strength tests
results.
