Hymn of Praise

7:30 A.M.

eXoDUS 1:15-22 (niV)

VeRSe 1

I once was lost in sin, but Jesus took me in,

And then a little light from heaven
filled my soul;
It bathed my heart in love
and wrote my name above,
And just a little talk with Jesus
made me whole.

ChoRUS

Have a little talk with Jesus,

tell Him all about
Your troubles, hear our faintest cry,
answer by and by;
Feel a little prayer wheel turning,
know a little fire is burning,
find a little talk with Jesus
makes it right.

VeRSe 2

Sometimes my path seems drear,

without a ray of cheer,
And then a cloud of doubt
may hide the light of day;
The mists of sin may rise and hide
the starry skies,
But just a little talk with Jesus
clears the way.

VeRSe 3

I may have doubts and fears,

my eyes be filled with tears,
But Jesus is a friend
who watches day and night;
I go to Him in prayer,
He knows my evry care,
And just a little talk with Jesus
makes it right.

The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew

midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and
Puah, 16When you are helping the Hebrew
women during childbirth on the delivery stool,
if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him;
but if it is a girl, let her live. 17The midwives,
however, feared God and did not do what the
king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the
boys live. 18Then the king of Egypt summoned
the midwives and asked them, Why have you
done this? Why have you let the boys live?
15

The midwives answered Pharaoh, Hebrew

women are not like Egyptian women; they are
vigorous and give birth before the midwives
arrive. 20So God was kind to the midwives and
the people increased and became even more
numerous. 21 And because the midwives feared
God, he gave them families of their own. 22Then
Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: Every
Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into
the Nile, but let every girl live.

Now Naaman was commander of the army
of the king of Aram. He was a great man in
the sight of his master and highly regarded,
because through him the Lord had given
victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he
had leprosy. 2Now bands of raiders from Aram
had gone out and had taken captive a young
girl from Israel, and she served Naamans wife.

She said to her mistress, If only my master

would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He
would cure him of his leprosy.
Naaman went to his master and told him what
the girl from Israel had said. 5By all means, go,
the king of Aram replied. I will send a letter to
the king of Israel. So Naaman left, taking with
him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels
of gold and ten sets of clothing. 6The letter
that he took to the king of Israel read: With
this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to
you so that you may cure him of his leprosy.
7
As soon as the king of Israel read the letter,
he tore his robes and said, Am I God? Can
I kill and bring back to life? Why does this
fellow send someone to me to be cured of his
leprosy? See how he is trying to pick a quarrel
with me!
4

When Elisha the man of God heard that the

king of Israel had torn his robes, he sent him
this message: Why have you torn your robes?
Have the man come to me and he will know
that there is a prophet in Israel. 9So Naaman
went with his horses and chariots and stopped
at the door of Elishas house. 10Elisha sent a
messenger to say to him, Go, wash yourself
seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will
be restored and you will be cleansed.
8

But Naaman went away angry and said, I

thought that he would surely come out to me
and stand and call on the name of the Lord his
God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me
of my leprosy. 12Are not Abana and Pharpar,
the rivers of Damascus, better than all the
waters of Israel? Couldnt I wash in them and
be cleansed? So he turned and went off in a
rage.
11

July 17, 2016

Naamans servants went to him and said,

My father, if the prophet had told you to do
some great thing, would you not have done
it? How much more, then, when he tells you,
Wash and be cleansed! 14So he went down
and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times,
as the man of God had told him, and his flesh
was restored and became clean like that of a
young boy.

PhiLiPPiAnS 4:4-9 (nRSV)

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say,
Rejoice. 5Let your gentleness be known
to everyone. The Lord is near. 6Do not
worry about anything, but in everything by
prayer and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known to God.
7
And the peace of God, which surpasses all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your
minds in Christ Jesus.
4

Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever

is honorable, whatever is just, whatever
is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is
commendable, if there is any excellence and
if there is anything worthy of praise, think
about these things. 9Keep on doing the things
that you have learned and received and heard
and seen in me, and the God of peace will be
with you.

Mental health Awareness
Month
1 in 5 people will experience mental
illness in a given year.
How we are diagnosed, treated, and effectively manage our lives is so often dependent on our awareness,
and on our ability to overcome the cultural stigma associated with these conditions.
If you or a family member has a story to share about how mental illness has touched you, we are asking
you to share with the community. Each person will asked to share a 2-minute portion of their story, on
Sunday, July 31st, during worship services in honor on National Minority Mental Health Month, and
at Trinity UCCs Third Annual Mental Health Expo (in the Atrium and Fellowship Hall).
If you would like to share your story, please contact our Parish Nurse, Deacon Jiles Taylor-George, at 773966-1558, or via email at jtgeorge@trinitychicago.

The Endeleo Institute was recently selected as a participant in a research study entitled,
Comparing Urban Equity Strategies in Chicago and Los Angeles. An Assistant Professor of
Advocacy and Social Change in the School of Communication at Loyola University Chicago
is conducting the research to understand equity strategies used to bring social justice to
disadvantaged communities in both cities.
The very first question innocently posed by the California native was whether Washington
Heights was actually a part of Chicago. He explained rather incredulously that en route to our
office, he noticed abject signs of poverty along the 95th Street corridor, a stark contrast to what
he had witnessed thus far in the city.
It really set the tone for the 60-minute interview and was a reminder of just how strong the
relationship between perception and reality. A disinvested and blighted commercial corridor
tends to signify that neighborhood poverty, poor health, and education, joblessness, inadequate
housing, violence and crime are close at hand. Its what folks from outside of the community see
and those living in it have grown accustomed.
Truth is, Washington Heights is indeed a very stable community with quality housing stock,
a culturally significant regional library, strong faith-based organizations, and excellent
transportation modes. In fact, according to a Priority Planning Report conducted last year, the
area leaks over $200 million a year; meaning folks leave the community to shop elsewhere for
the goods and services they need.
In order to truly become a more vibrant and prosperous community, Endeleo will continue to
leverage Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) strategies, which are essentially plans to
leverage local assets as the primary building blocks to sustainable community development. By
strengthening existing assets, citizen-led renovation projects (like the Woodson Library) will have
positive catalytic influence on this undervalued corridor and community.

2016 Churchwide Theme

and Scriptures
Theme: The Fruit of The Spirit:
Taste and See!
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our
lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is
no law against these things!
Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)

January Love

He answered, You shall love the Lord your God

with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with
all your strength, and with all your mind; and your
neighbor as yourself. Luke 10:27 (NRSV)

February Joy

Nehemiah said, Go and enjoy good food and

sweet drinks. Send some to people who have none,
because today is a holy day to the Lord. Dont be
sad, because the joy of the Lord will make you
strong. Nehemiah 8:10 (NCV)

March Peace

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called

children of God. Matthew 5:9 (NIV)

April Patience

Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall

strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!
Psalm 27:14 (NKJV)

July Faithfulness

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, You

are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my
teachings. And you will know the truth, and the
truth will set you free. John 8:31-32 (NLT)

August Gentleness

By the humility and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to

youI, Paul, who am timid when face to face with
you, but bold toward you when away! I beg you
that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I
expect to be toward some people who think that
we live by the standards of this world. For though
we live in the world, we do not wage war as the
world does. 2 Corinthians 10:1-3 (NIV)

September Self Control

So prepare your minds for action and exercise selfcontrol. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation
that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed
to the world. So you must live as Gods obedient
children. Dont slip back into your old ways of living
to satisfy your own desires. You didnt know any
better then. 1 Peter 1:13-14 (NLT)

October Forgive One Another

May Kindness

Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words,

and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.
Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted,
forgiving one another, just as God through Christ
has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31-32 (NLT)

June Goodness

My brothers and sisters, God called you to be free,

but do not use your freedom as an excuse to do
what pleases your sinful self. Serve each other with
love. Galatians 5:13 (NCV)

This is what the Lord of Heavens Armies says:

Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to
one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans,
foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against
each other. Zechariah 7:9-10 (NLT)
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let
them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the
humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor
bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do
not boast about it or deny the truth.
James 3:13-14 (NIV)

November Service One Another

December Build Up One Another

So encourage each other and build each other up,

just as you are already doing.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NLT)
