The Importance of learning English

Language
English is the most widely used language
in the world. Nearly two third of the world
population use English language. It is the
mother tongue of some countries like
England, the U.S.A., Canada, Australia
and in several parts of Africa. English is
our second language.
English is important not only as an
international language, but also as a
language of trade, as a link language, as
a language of mass communication, as a
second language of everyday life and as a
means of obtaining foreign employment.
There are several communities in Sri
Lanka. English plays an important role as
a link language. It promotes good
relations among all the communities. If

we know English we can communicate

with other ethnic groups easily.
Today the world is highly advanced in
science and technology. Almost all the
books on these subjects are written in
English. If we know English we can read
and understands the facts in these books.
At present, the whole world has become a
global village through modern methods of
communication such as Telex, Fax, E-mail,
Internet and so on. English is the main
language that is used in all these media.
As our economy is based mostly based on
import-export trade, we have to deal with
other countries English is essential for this
purpose.
English is useful for higher studies too. It is
essential for courses on medicine,
engineering and computer science. Most of
the books on these subjects too are written in
English. Apart from that, English is used as

the official language of communication of all

the international organizations such as
SARRC, UNO, UNICEF and IMF. To participate in
those conferences one should have a good
command of English.
Therefore if we need to be a member of the
global village we need to have a good
command of English.

My Hobby
What is a hobby? A hobby is a leisure time activity
of a person. A hobby offers enjoyment, education,
companionship with others of similar interests.
Very often we gain economic benefits.
My hobby is collecting stamps. Philately is the
scientific word for stamp collecting. A per who
collects stamps is called philatelist. We can learn
many things through this hobby. It is instructive
educational and also profitable.
One day my father took me to see a stamp
exhibition. There were thousands of colourful
stamps both local and foreign. I was so attracted

by the colourful stamps that I started collecting

stamps from the following day.
We can learn about culture, fauna and flora,
history, discoveries, inventions, and biographies of
great persons through stamps. I have nearly nine
hundred stamps, both local and foreign. I get
stamps from my friends and from my pen pals. I
have three foreign pen pals. They are also stamp
collectors.

Dear Uncle,
How are you? Im fine. Last
month I went to India with my family
members. It was only a one week
educational trip because my brother is
doing a project about historical places in
India and he wanted to find some
information.
First of all we went to New Delhi,
the capital of India. There we saw Red
Fort and also Rashtrapathi Bawan the
official residence of the president.Next

we went to Taj Mahal . It was a marvelous

monument. King Sha Jehan had built it to
remember his queen Mumtash. It is
made of lime stones, due to bad
environmental conditions some parts
have been destroyed. Next we went to
Saranatha temple. It was the oldest
Asian stupa and it was built by King
Dharmashoka.There was a nice statue
where there were four lions facing the
four directions and at the end of their
feet there was Dharma Chakraya .
Buddhagaya was the next place we
visited. Anagarika Dharmapala has saved
this place from Indian threats. Due to his
work we still worship that place and we
didnt forget to worship Dambadiwatoo.
Worshipping this sacred place was the
last one in our educational trip. We
enhanced our knowledge a lot and also
we saw Ganganam Nadee.
We have photographs of these
sacred places. I will send them to you.

Show them to my cousins too. There

some presents for all of you. Please come
and collect them. Give my regards to
everybody. May God Bless you.

Collecting Stamps
Collecting stamps is a very
interesting and useful hobby. I
started collecting stamps about a
year ago. Now I have about two
hundred stamps. I have both local
and foreign stamps. My father
helps me in my hobby. He brings
me stamps. When I get more than
one stamp with the same picture I
exchange them for new ones with
my friends.
I have two stamp
albums. I have pasted all the

stamps in my albums. There are

stamps in different sizes and
shapes. We can learn many
things about the culture of other
countries through the stamps.
