DESIGN
3.1

Item Definition
The fuel-gas filter separator removes solid contaminants and entrained liquid
particles from a natural gas stream prior to the gas being utilized for fuel. The filter
separators include both the vertical and horizontal types.

3.2

Characteristics
3.2.1

3.2.4

Performance
3.2.1.1

Fuel-gas filter separators shall be capable of continuous service at

the operating conditions specified on the data sheets.

3.2.1.2

Filter separators shall be sized and rated to meet the maximum

and minimum pressure and temperature requirements at the
specified fuel-gas rates.

3.2.1.3

Separators shall operate efficiently over the full range of operating

conditions with a maximum initial (clean) pressure loss of 1 pound
per square inch (psi).

3.2.1.4

The separators shall have a minimum service life of 20 years.

3.2.1.5

Fuel-gas throughput capacity and liquid removal capability shall

not be less than that specified on the data sheets.

Maintainability
The fuel-gas filter separators shall be designed and fabricated to facilitate
maintenance, repair, removal, and cleaning of the filter separator internals.

3.2.5

Environmental Conditions
The fuel-gas filter separators shall be suitable for the environmental
conditions specified in VES-1000.

3.3

General
3.3.1

Fuel-gas filter separators shall be designed and constructed in accordance

with VES-5120, Unfired Pressure Vessels.

3.3.2

Filter separators shall be designed and constructed of materials in

accordance with ASME Section VIII, Division 1, Pressure Vessels. Filter
separators that comply with the ASME code shall be code stamped.

3.4

3.3.3

Filter separators shall be designed and oriented to facilitate interconnection

among the separator, other equipment, and the piping associated with the
separator. The design shall incorporate any features necessary for the
interconnection.

3.3.4

Filter separators shall be designed and fabricated for safe operation under
the specified internal and external environments.

3.3.5

Filter separators shall be sized in accordance with the specified operating

conditions and steam data listed on the data sheets.

3.3.6

The fuel-gas filter separators shall be two-phase, horizontal or vertical

separators. The gas flow shall be into a filter-coalescing section and then
into an eliminator chamber.

3.3.7

Horizontal vessels shall be provided with a divided liquid sump to prevent

accumulation of liquids in each vessel chamber.

3.3.8

The filters and mist eliminators on vertical separators shall be located

above the highest liquid level to prevent separated liquids from being carried
along with the gas.

3.3.9

A quick-opening closure shall be provided and shall be designed to prevent

the possibility of opening under pressure. The opening shall be hinged or
shall have davit-post supports.

Materials
The construction materials for vessels shall conform to the ASME code and the
requirements of VES-5120, Unfired Pressure Vessels, unless otherwise specified in
the project specifications.

3.5

Filter Section
3.5.1

General
3.5.1.1

Filters shall be designed so that the filter surface will be 50

percent coated with solids before an appreciable pressure loss
occurs.

3.5.1.2

The filter media shall be capable of removing 98 percent of all

solid and liquid particles 5 microns and larger when operating
between 10 percent and 100 percent of the rated capacity.

3.5.2

3.5.3

3.6

Filter Elements
3.5.2.1

Filter elements shall have a perforated steel core with a fiberglass

filter medium.

3.5.2.2

The filter elements shall be provided with an outside cloth cover to

protect personnel from the fiberglass filter medium.

3.5.2.3

The filter elements shall be provided with an inside barrier to

prevent fiberglass from passing through the filter.

3.5.2.4

Two spare sets of filter elements shall be shipped with the unit.

3.5.2.5

Filter elements located in line with the inlet nozzle shall have
impingement protection.

3.5.2.6

The filter elements shall provide efficient service for a minimum of

6 months and are not reusable.

Tubesheets
3.5.3.1

Tubesheets shall be designed to withstand either a pressure

differential equal to the vessel maximum working pressure or the
filter collapse pressure plus 20 psi, whichever is less.

3.5.3.2

The closure end of tubes shall be adequately supported to prevent

vibration or excessive strain on the tubesheet end.

3.5.3.3

Tubesheet pipes shall be provided to support the filter elements

throughout the total length of the elements. The tube pipes shall
be seal-welded to the tubesheet.

Mist Eliminators
The mist eliminators shall be of the stainless steel wire-mesh type, unless otherwise
specified on the separator data sheets.

3.7

Instruments and Controls

3.7.1
3.7.2
3.7.3

Couplings shall be provided on the vessel shell for monitoring the differential
pressure across both the filter elements and the mist eliminator.
High-level shutdown and/or alarm connections shall be provided.
Two sets of gauge-glass assemblies and drain connectors shall be
provided, one on each section of the filter separator. The assemblies and
piping shall be in accordance with VES-7110, Installation of Instruments on
