Name of appliance

PHOSPHINE RESISTANCE TEST KIT

Field of application

The PHOSPHINE RESISTANCE TEST KIT is intended for testing the behaviour
and the activity of insect pests particular in stored products in a defined phosphine
containing atmosphere.
Any other uses beyond the above stated are classed as improper use.

Equipment

100 ml syringe
2 cannula: 1 cannula with a rubber hose
5 l flexible plastic canister in a cardboard
lid with septum
5 x 2 TEST KIT PELLETS in an aluminium foil pouch

instructions for use

Filling

Insert only 2 TEST KIT PELLETS (= one aluminium foil pouch) into the flexible
canister.
Do not overfill the canister.
6

Safety measures

Please adhere to the instructions for the protection of applicators as stated in the
directions of use of the fumigant and use the personal protective equipment
recommended.
Do not eat, drink or smoke while handling the fumigant. After completion of the
work wash hands thoroughly. Keep both fumigant and appliance out of the reach
of children.

Evaluation

In case there are any active insects after a given time period and a phosphine
concentration of 3000 ppm, the tested insect strain is resistant to phosphine. The
time periods for several species of insects are given in the table of Appendix 3.
Resistant insect strains have to be fumigated with a higher concentration and a
longer exposure time. Please consider the GOOD FUMIGATION PRATICE
recommended by the Detia Degesch GmbH.
If you find a resistant insect strain please send a sample (100 200 insects)
together with a copy of your test report (Appendix 4) to the Detia Degesch GmbH.
10

How to adjust the concentration in the syringe

The two TEST KIT PELLETS generate a phosphine concentration of

approximately 5000 6000 ppm in the canister. Therefore you have to dilute this
atmosphere with air to get 3000 ppm in the syringe.

volume air [ml]

take out from the canister [ml]

First, determine the phosphine concentration in the canister with testing tubes (eg
5000 ppm). Then read this concentration on the x-axis and draw a straight
perpendicular line (red line in the diagram).

concentration in the canister [ppm]

After that draw two horizontal lines from the point of intersection between the red
and dark blue line, one to the left (green line in the diagram) and one to the right
(blue line in the diagram). The green line yield the volume you have to take out of
the canister and the blue line yield the volume air. The sum of both is 100 ml and
adjust a concentration of 3000 ppm in the syringe.
11

How to measure the phosphine concentration in the canister

Connect the cannula with the rubber hose, the testing tube and the pump. Than
prick the cannula into the septum of the canister and determine the phosphine
concentration as described in the instruction for the testing tubes.
12

Cleaning of the canister

To remove the phosphine containing atmosphere in the canister, fill it completely

with water. After few minutes empty the canister and repeat the procedure. Dry the
canister in the air.
13

Dosage

The two TEST KIT PELLETS with 8 % magnesium phosphide generate a

phosphine concentration of approximately 5000 6000 ppm. This is the maximum
dosage. Do not use more than two pellets.

14

Testing the tightness of the canister

We recommend to test the tightness of the canister before each use.

Unfold the canister and close it with the lid. Than press on both sides of the
canister and look/hear if any air leaves the canister.
15

Limitation

The PHOSPHINE RESISTANCE TEST KIT is not designed for the use with other
metal phosphide containing products like Phostoxin or Magtoxin. Their higher
active ingredient content develops a phosphine concentration in the canister above
the explosion limit.
