Geopolymer Concrete

High Performance Construction Materials for Sustainable Development

Geopolymer concrete is concrete based on an inorganic binder polymerized from Al-Si rich materials
of geological or industrial origin, such as fly-ash.

Superior Engineering Properties

Compressive strengths ranging from 20-30MPa to 80-100MPa Ref. 1.

Flexural strengths typically 2-3MPa higher than for OPC concrete at the same compressive
strength Ref. 2.
Hardening in 5-7 days vs. 28 days for OPC concrete at ambient temperature.
Does not generate any heat of hydration during curing due to the polymerization nature of its
chemistry.
Low specific creep: typ. 25-30 microstrains at 40% load, vs. 50-60 for OPC concrete.
Low drying shrinkage: typ. 100-150 microstrains @ 1 yr., vs. 500-800 for OPC concrete.
Excellent resistance to freeze-thaw cycles Ref. 3.
Adhesion to fresh and old concrete substrates, steel, glass, ceramics.
Inherent protection of steel reinforcing due to low chloride diffusion rates Ref.4.

Superior Durability

High level of resistance to a range of acids and salt solutions Ref.5

a. Na2SO4, MgSO4, NaCl, Sulfuric Acid, Hydrochloric Acid
b. Resistant to seawater corrosion
Not subject to deleterious alkali-aggregate reactions Ref.6.
Impervious to water.
Fire resistance Ref.7
a. No water molecules present in the geopolymer structure hence does not spall at high
temperatures, unlike OPC concrete.
b. Retains its strength at temperatures of up to 600 C, comparing to 350 C for OPC
concrete.
c. Does not burn or release toxic fumes, unlike organic polymers.

Geopolymer Concrete

Versatility

Can be used in a wide range of ready-mix, pre-cast, and pre-stressed/pre-cast applications.

Compatible with existing concrete industry logistics infrastructure.
Ideal product for challenging, high-performance infrastructure applications: metro/railroad
systems, highways, bridges, marine infrastructure, dams, water and sewage pipes, canal linings, mine
tailings, among many other.

Environmentally Friendly

Our Geopolymers are synthesized from a blend of ASTM Class F fly-ash and other widely used coal
combustion by-products, enabling an increased utilization factor of such products.
80% reduction in CO2 footprint comparing to OPC, opportunity to obtain tradable CO2 certificates.
Ability to encapsulate a wide variety of heavy metal ions, enabling industrial toxic waste
encapsulation applications.

Reference Information
Ref.1, Compressive Strength
Compressive testing performed for Iveron Materials by Craig Testing Laboratories, a testing
laboratory accredited by several US state Depts. of Transportation (DOT), by the AASHTO
Material Reference Laboratory, by the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory, and by the US
Army Corps of Engineers. Compressive Strength tested according to ASTM-C39. All samples had
workability of ~120 min, tested according to ASTM-C143 and ASTM-C94.

Ref.5, Resistance to Acid and Sulphate Attack

Iveron Materials high-CaO fly-ash based geopolymer mortar samples tested using the California sewage
pipe test procedure (more aggressive than ASTM-C267), using 10% concentration sulphuric acid. At 30
days, with the acid refreshed three times, Iveron geopolymer mortar samples lost 5% of their mass.
After 30 days in the same concentration of acid, Silica Fume OPC concrete (chemical resistant OPC
concrete) typically shows total failure.
