Writing Task
In this poem, the narrator praises the courageous
soldiers. Do you think the narrator is supporting war?
Give reasons for your answer.
In the poem, the narrator describes the loyal and
disciplined action of the brave soldiers in the Light
Brigade. The six hundred men obeyed their leaders
command to charge into a valley to attack the enemy
even though they all knew it was a mistake. Such
courage deserves praise and that is what the narrator
does in the poem. This does not mean that the narrator
is supporting war. In fact, by describing the battle so
vividly, how guns volleyed and thundered the narrator
makes us view the war with horror and disgust.
Furthermore, the narrator points out unnecessary loss
of many soldiers lives due to careless command. This
strengthens the idea that war is unnecessary and
horrifying.
