    Whatispelvicorganprolapse?Pelvicorganprolapseisaconditionthatonlyaffectswomen.Ithappenswhen
    tissuesthatsupporttheorgansinthelowerbellyrelax.Thesetissuesaresometimescalledthe"pelvicfloor."When
    theyrelaxtoomuch,theorgansdropdownandpressagainstorbulgeintothevagina.
    Ifthebladderbulgesintothevagina,doctorscallthisproblem"cystocele."Iftherectumbulgesintothevagina,they
    callit"rectocele."Uterineprolapsemeanstheuterushasbulgedintothevagina(figure1).
    Somethingscanincreaseawoman'sriskofhavingpelvicorganprolapse.Theyincludepregnancy,pasthysterectomy
    (surgerytoremovetheuterus),obesity,andolderage.
    Whatarethesymptomsofpelvicorganprolapse?Manywomenwiththisproblemhavenosymptoms.Butsome
    womenwithpelvicorganprolapsehavesymptomsthatinclude:

    Fullnessorpressureinthepelvisorvagina
    Abulgeinthevaginaorcomingoutofthevagina
    Leakingurinewhentheylaugh,cough,orsneeze
    Needingtourinateallofasudden

    Whentheyusethetoilet,somewomenneedtopressonthebulgeinthevaginawithafingertogetoutalltheirurineor
    tofinishabowelmovement.
    Isthereatestforpelvicorganprolapse?Yourdoctorornursewillbeabletotellifyouhaveitbydoingapelvic
    exam.
    IsthereanythingIcandoonmyowntofeelbetter?Yes.Somewomenfeelbetteriftheydopelvicmuscle
    exercises.Theseexercisesstrengthenthemusclesthatcontroltheflowofurineandbowelmovements.Theyarealso
    knownas"Kegel"exercises.Yournurseordoctorcanteachyouhowtodothemorreferyoutoaphysicaltherapist
    whospecializesinpelvicfloorproblems.
    Howispelvicorganprolapsetreated?Womenwhohavenosymptomsorwhoarenotbotheredbytheir
    symptomsdonotneedtreatment.Forwomenwithsymptomsthatbotherthem,doctorssuggestdifferenttreatments,
    including:
    PelvicfloormuscleexercisesPatientsworkwithaphysicaltherapistfor8to12weekstostrengthenthepelvic
    muscles.
    AvaginalpessaryThisdevicefitsinsideawoman'svaginatosupportthebladderandpushitbackintoplace.
    Pessariescomeindifferentshapesandsizes.
    SurgeryAsurgeoncanmovedroppedorgansbackwheretheybelongandstrengthenthetissuesthatkeep
    theminplace.Womenshouldhavethistypeofsurgeryonlyiftheyaredonehavingchildren.
