Water Purification Program Offered by DCP

Ohio has plenty of freshwater, but is it safe to drink?
Darke County Parks is pleased to welcome back Rob Simpson,
owner of the Canteen Shop on W. 3rd St. in Greenville. On Saturday,
July 30, at 1 p.m., Rob will discuss methods of water filtering and
treatment. With water so readily available, most people dont think
about what they would do on the trail without it. Learn what to bring
along on longer hikes or what to have with you just in case. Participants will spend some time outdoors, so remember to dress for the
conditions. Preregistration is required for this free afternoon of survival education.
For more information or to register, please call 937-548-0165, or

Danielle Swabb is Recipient

Of Lead the Way Scholarship
Thoughtful, inspirational, and fun! Five area high school seniors
demonstrated all these qualities and more in their winning blood drive
recruitment campaigns for the annual Community Blood Center/Vectren
Lead The Way Creative Scholarship competition.
Among the winners is Danielle Swabb from Covington High School,
who will receive a $1,000 award from Vectren for college tuition assistance.
Scholarship applicants must be graduating, college-bound seniors
from a school that hosts a CBC blood drive. They are challenged to develop an effective blood drive marketing campaign with a clever theme
and slogan, and creatively designed marketing materials.
Danielles theme, Blood Donors: The Next Generation borrows
from the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series. The artwork for
her T-shirt design combined a spacecraft insignia with the CBC blood
drop logo. Danielle represents a third generation of active blood donors
in her family, and being part of a donor legacy is the inspiration for her
message.
dAnielle SwAbb
I wish to uphold this tradition, and I know in my heart that I, and my
CHS Student
family, have made a difference in the world, she said. I hope my theme
inspires my classmates to step up, save lives, and become the next generation of blood donors.
Danielle would like to be a teacher and plans to study Spanish education at Wright State University.
Samples of the scholarship winning artwork will be available at: www.GivingBlood.org/givingback/reward. The Lead The Way Creative Scholarship for High School Seniors is made possible by a
$5,000 grant from Vectren.

For the past several years, when paid advertising isnt scheduled for the front page of the Stillwater Valley
Advertiser, weve been publishing Take Us Along pictures, randomly drawn from entries received over
the past several months. Our readers tell us how much they enjoy seeing where their friends and neighbors
spent their vacations.
Contest submissions must include a COLOR photograph with someone holding a copy of the Advertiser,
with a scenic background showcasing your vacation destination, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Statue of
Liberty, Grand Canyon, etc. Photos taken in private homes and yards, restaurants, airports, etc., are not acceptable contest entries. Photos must be in focus and not too dark or too light.
Include the names of the persons pictured and background information about your trip (dates, points of
interest, amusing anecdotes, whatever you wish to include in your picture caption). Weve drawn many contest
entries that would have been perfect, but they lacked sufficient information and had to be rejected.
Most importantly, many entries dont include a return mailing address so the winner can have their picture
returned to them along with their contest prize. If emailing your entry, it should be in a JPEG or TIFF format
and emailed to: arenspub@gmail.com.
Mailed contest entries should be addressed to: Arens Corporation - Stillwater Valley Advertiser Take
Us Along Contest, 395 S. High St. - P.O. Box 69, Covington, OH 45318.
With vacation season just around the corner, we look forward to receiving many Take Us Along contest
pictures. Dont forget to invite the Advertiser along on your next vacation!!!

We proceeded to find the wives, and told them what we had done for Kayla.

Janice then reported, I gave her $5 on our credit card. We all had a good laugh
while Kayla waved goodbye with a big, big smile on her face.

by Gary Godfrey

Go Boilermakers!

Its Better To Give Than Get!

Ginger and I, along with Janice and Larry Sarver, took a road trip this past weekend to see Gingers sister and brother-in-law, Sandy and Rich Behnke in Rockford, IL.
Its hard to believe that six people could eat as much food as we did. Everything
from shish kabobs to homemade ice cream were considered fair game. This doesnt include all the snacks, beverages, and lunches we enjoyed while playing golf,
going to garage sales, and car museums. Shopping was a high priority on the
womens list, while golf balls and car shows were scratched off the mens list.
It was a very relaxing weekend for the guests. I hope we didnt wear out our host
and hostess. Janices birthday was July 24th, so we celebrated it each day with
song and dance, and more food. Janice is watching her weight, but the meals
made her cheat more than once.
I have to tell you about our return trip back to Ohio. Besides stopping for potty
breaks, we stopped for dinner on Sunday at a Cracker Barrel in Indiana. We all ordered and ate a wonderful meal. Our waitress, Kayla, did an excellent job with refills and special requests. We learned that Kayla would be starting college at
Purdue University in August.
The ladies finished first and excused themselves to look around the gift shop. I
waited for Larry. Kayla had already given our bills to us, and Janice picked up
their bill while dashing to the gift shop. I led the charge to the cash register while
Larry fumbled for his wallet at the table.
I forgot to leave a tip, so I went back to the table and decided to leave extra for
Kayla. I gave her $10 and told her to have a good time at Purdue this fall. Larry
was still fumbling around. I cant find the bill, he explained. I told him that
Janice had their bill. He then gave Kayla $10 more dollars.

This weeks bottom line: Its better to give than to receive, even if the tip was a
mistake.
Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving
more. - H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
