Celebration
Experience the traditions of Japan in this
community celebration for the opening of
the exhibition. Enjoy taiko drumming performances by New Mexico Taiko and
dance by the New Mexico Japanese
Citizen Leagues Okinawa dancers group.
Also see Hana de Mai a choreographed
ikebana demonstration by the Ichiyo School
of Ikebana, Albuquerque Chapter. This program is presented in partnership with the
New Mexico Japanese Citizen League and
the Japan America Society of New Mexico.

3rd Thursday: The Jazz
Age Experience
Explore the Jazz Age
through an evening of
big band dance and
music. Watch demonstrations presented by

local dancers, or hop on the dance


floor to learn some basic moves. Dress
in your favorite fashion from the Jazz
Age. This event is free.

Duke City Dance Band performs at

Join Andrew Connors, Curator of Art, for
a discussion in the exhibition. This program
is free.

Sunday, March 10

2 p.m.
Sunday Program: The Music of Madama
Butterfly
Explore the music and song of this
world-famous opera inspired by 19th
century Japan. Anthony Barrese, Artistic
Director and Chief Conductor for
Opera Southwest, will examine the development of the operas music, including attempts by composer Giacomo
Puccini to recreate a realistic musical
atmosphere of Japan. Live musicians
will provide excerpts to accompany the
talk. This program is presented in partnership with Opera Southwest who will
produce the opera at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in March.

Family Fun Day: Rabbits, Dragons and
BearsOh My!
Enjoy performances of folk tales from
Asia, go on an animal scavenger hunt in
the gallery and create animal-inspired
art! Folk tales from Asia performed by
Elaine Muray at 2 & 3 p.m.

Elaine Muray integrates movement and


narration to deliver tales from around
the world as well as personal stories. She
has performed at the Three Rivers Storytelling Festival, Northlands Storytelling
Conference and the Australian Storytelling
Festival. Muray serves on the Board of
the National Storytelling Network (NSN).

Thursday, March 21

3rd Thursday: Women, Art and Creativity
Come to the Museum and hear Madi
Sato, an award-winning singer and
songwriter, poet, actor, sound healer
and teacher. Sato
performs both traditional Japanese
music and jazz. In the
lobby, learn to make
Art Deco-inspired
jewelry from Ophelia
Adelai Cornet. Join a
short talk in the
gallery exploring images of women in the
exhibition. This program is free.

Tuesday, April 9

Tour: Japanese Garden
Japanese botanical designs grace the
surfaces of many objects in the exhibition. Explore these botanical influences
in Albuquerques Japanese Garden,
built in honor of Sasebo, one of our Sister
Cities. The four-acre garden boasts a
majestic waterfall, an elegant koi pond
and a mixture of Japanese and local
plants.

Attendees must register in advance for


this docent guided tour by calling Jessica
Coyle at The Albuquerque Museum at
(505)243-7255. BioPark admission fees
apply. Participants should arrive at the
BioPark entrance by 10:15 a.m.

Sunday Program: Lecture
Join Andrew Connors, Curator of Art, for
a talk about the international movement
of Art Deco which influenced architecture,
interior and industrial design, fashion,
jewelry and the visual arts.
