IBM SPSS Statistics 21

Windows Installation
Instructions (Site License)

These instructions are for installing IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows using a site license.
A site license allows you to install SPSS Statistics for Windows on as many computers as
the number of licenses you purchased. This document is for end users who are installing
SPSS Statistics for Windows on desktop computers.

Before starting installation, be sure your system date is correct,

Changing the system date after installation may make your license invalid!

After installation, be sure to install latest patches. See "Problems,

Bugs " for more info.

System Requirements for IBM SPSS Statistics

Operating System

Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8.

Hardware Configuration

Intel or AMD processor, 1GHz or higher.

1 GB of RAM or more.
900 MB of available hard-disk space (additional help languages require 60-70MB
each).
Super XVGA (1024x768) or a higher-resolution monitor.

Software

You will also need your authorization code, which you should have received from OIT. It
activates your license for Base, Advanced and Regression products. If you licensed any
additional products directly from IBM you will also have additional authorization codes
for those products. You will need all of your authorization codes to complete installation
for all licensed products.
Note: You cannot run IBM SPSS Statistics remotely via Windows Terminal Services or
Citrix.

Installing IBM SPSS Statistics

Before Starting Installation
Make sure you have administrator privileges.
Make sure your system date is correct!
If you have an earlier version of SPSS, installing IBM SPSS Statistics 21 will not replace
it. You may want to uninstall the older version once you have confirmed that everything
is working. If you have customized menus or toolbars, they will not automatically carry
over to the new version.
If you still have SPSS 15 on your system, note that if you open it, files with *.sav, *.sps
extensions will be re-registered to SPSS 15 double-clicking one of these files will open
them in the SPSS 15, not IBM SPSS Statistics 21. See "File Associations" for how to
correct this.

Starting Installation
Windows XP
When download is complete, Double-click the downloaded file to begin installation.
Select Run, and follow the instructions that appear on the screen. See During
Installation below for further instructions.

Windows Vista or Windows 7

Right-click the downloaded file and choose Run as Administrator.
Select Run, and follow the instructions that appear on the screen. Refer to During
Installation for further instructions.

During Installation
License type. Be sure to select Site License.

Read and accept the license agreement. Proceed through the dialogs.
Destination Folder: The default location does NOT replace earlier versions of SPSS.

After successful installation of IBM SPSS Statistics 21, you can uninstall earlier
versions.
Help language. SPSS Statistics provides the ability to change the user interface
language. If you want the help language to always match the user interface language,
select the languages you may use. Installing help for additional languages increases disk
space requirements by 60-70 MB for each language.

Licensing Your Product

After the main part of the installation is complete, click OK on the "License and
Registration" screen to launch the License Authorization Wizard. The License
C:\Word\license_docs\SPSS\spss21\SPSS 21 Installation_download.rtf

Authorization Wizard allows you to obtain a license for SPSS Statistics for Windows.
Note: Licenses are tied to your computers hardware with a lock code. If you replace your
computer or its hardware, you will have a new lock code and will need to repeat the
authorization process. If you find that you exceeded the allowable number of
authorizations specified in the license agreement, contact OIT Administrative Desk. If you
need to re-install on the same hardware, be sure to save your license first. See
"Reinstallation" for instructions.
Warning! The license is sensitive to time changes. If you must change the system time
and then cannot run the product, contact OIT Administrative Desk.

Using the License Authorization Wizard

Note: If you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7, you may be prompted for
administrator credentials. Without the correct credentials, you will not be able to run the
License Authorization Wizard.
If you dont launch the License Authorization Wizard during installation, you can
launch it later. You must run it as Administrator.

From the Windows Start menu, Choose IBM SPSS Statistics License
Authorization Wizard. On Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-click the License
Authorization shortcut and choose "Run as Administrator".

When prompted, choose License my product now. Enter the authorization code you
got from OIT. (Use ctrl-v to Paste the authorization code into the License
Authorization dialog.) You can use an authorization code for only as many
installations as specified on your license. If you need to reinstall SPSS Statistics on
the same machine, see "Reinstallation" for how to preserve your license.
If you only want to use SPSS Statistics on this machine for a short time, select

"Enable a temporary trial period ". See "Enabling a Trial License" below for
instructions.
The License Authorization Wizard sends your authorization code over the Internet to IBM
SPSS and automatically retrieves your license. If your computer is behind a proxy, click
Configure proxy settings and enter the appropriate settings. Firewalls may prevent
successful licensing over the Internet.

If the authorization process fails (for example, due to a firewall), you will be
prompted to send an e-mail message. The message must include your authorization code,
"lock code", and SPSS version. The lock code is displayed on the Product Authorization
screen of the License Authorization Wizard.
If you choose the desktop option, a new message with the appropriate information will
be created automatically.
If you choose the Web-based option, copy and paste the message text from the License
Authorization Wizard into your e-mail application, and send to the address shown.
When the license code arrives, if you've closed the License Authorization Wizard,
restart it. Select License my product now, and paste the license you got in the email from
IBM (not the Authorization code) into the Enter Codes panel. Click Next.
C:\Word\license_docs\SPSS\spss21\SPSS 21 Installation_download.rtf

Note: Use ctrl-v to Paste the license into the License Authorization dialog.

Enabling a Trial License

You can enable a 14-day trial license instead of installing the regular license.
Launch the License Authorization Wizard. Choose Enable a temporary trial period.
At the Trial License prompt, click the Browse button to locate trial.txt . The Trial
License Wizard will find the license from the file in the SPSS installation directory
and automatically fill in the box. Finish the Authorization wizard.

File Associations
If you have SPSS 15 on your machine, then opening that will result in spss file associations
reverting to SPSS 15. This means when you double-click an spss file, it will open SPSS 15,
rather than SPSS Statistics 21. After the SPSS 15 license expires, it will continue to
attempt to open, but will fail.
To remedy the situation, you will need to uninstall SPSS 15, then uninstall and reinstall
SPSS Statistics 21. Before you uninstall SPSS Statistics 21, be sure to preserve your license
file. See Reinstallation. Alternatively, instead of re-installing SPSS Statistics 21, you could
re-set the file associations for *.sav and *.sps files to open with IBM SPSS Statistics 21.
However, for machines with multiple logons, this would have to be done on each user's
logon.

Reinstallation
Your SPSS license is locked to your machine. You cannot re-use your authorization code in
order to retrieve your license. You must save your license file before uninstalling IBM
SPSS Statistics.

Using My Computer, browse to the IBM SPSS Statistics 21 installation folder.

Copy the file lservrc to another location. This is your license file.
Double-click your installation file to re-start installation.
On the "Program Maintenance" screen, select "Remove".
After removal is complete, re-install IBM SPSS Statistics 21.
When you get to the Licensing step, select Cancel. You cannot use the License
Wizard to restore your license.

After installation is complete, copy your license file, lservc, back to the IBM SPSS
Statistics 21 installation directory.

 Download and re-install any patches.

SPSS Legacy Viewer

SPSS Statistics 21 cannot read output (*.spo) files created by SPSS 15 or earlier. In order to
read these files you must download and install the SPSS Legacy Viewer (aka SPSS
SmartReader).

Installation Instructions

C:\Word\license_docs\SPSS\spss21\SPSS 21 Installation_download.rtf

 Download Legacy Viewer from

http://www.umass.edu/statdata/software/downloads/SPSSLegacy/

Log on to your computer with administrator privileges.

Using an unzip utility, extract the contents of LegacyViewer.zip to a
temporary location on your hard drive. For example, "c:\temp".
Windows XP: Double-click setup.exe from the temporary location, e.g.
"c:\temp\setup.exe".
Windows Vista or 7: Right-click setup.exe from the temporary
location, e.g. "c:\temp\setup.exe", and choose "Run as Administrator".
Accept the license terms and proceed through the remainder of the
installation wizard, accepting the defaults.
Setting Legacy Viewer File Association
*.spo files are not automatically associated with SPSS Legacy Viewer. After installing the
Legacy Viewer, you need to manually set the association so double-clicking a *.spo file will
open the file using SPSS Legacy Viewer:
Right-click a *.spo file, select Properties.
Next to "Opens with", click "Change"
On the "Open With" dialog, click "Browse". (Do NOT select SPSS from the list.)
Browse to "C:\Program Files\SPSS Viewer" folder
 Select spssnav.exe
 Click Open
Check "Always use the selected program for this kind of file"
 Click OK

Documentation
The Command Syntax Reference manual is automatically loaded with SPSS Statistics. Other
documentation can be downloaded from
http://www.umass.edu/statdata/software/spss/spss_install.htm or from
the SPSS Support website (which requires registration).
All documentation is in pdf format, which requires Acrobat Reader. If you dont already have
Acrobat Reader, download it from http://www.adobe.com.

Enabling Programmability
IBM SPSS Statistics Integration Plug-ins enable you to extend the command syntax language
with programs written in R, Python, and VB.NET. For more information, visit IBM Developer
Works,
(https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/groups/service/html/allcommunities).
Under Public Groups, select SPSS.

authorization code(s). For instructions on using the authorization code(s), see Licensing Your
Product.

Problems, Changes, Bugs, Limitations, Patches

IBM SPSS Statistics patches are available at http://www947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/Overview/Software/Software_support_(general). You may
need to register with IBM to get access to this site. Be sure to check back periodically for
additional patches that may be released. If you do not wish to register with SPSS, patches for the
latest release are also available at
http://www.umass.edu/statdata/software/spss/spss_install.htm
Patches for earlier releases and important new issues are also listed:
http://www.umass.edu/statdata/software/news.
The following is list of changes and incompatibilities with past releases
Viewer files (*.spo) created in versions prior to SPSS 16.0 cannot be opened in SPSS 16.0 or later.
You must use the Legacy Viewer to open *.spo files.
The IGRAPH (InteractiveGraphics) user interface has been discontinued. Saved IGRAPH syntax
still runs, but no longer looks the same. It will be discontinued in a future release. A Syntax
Converter is available for converting saved IGRAPH syntax to GGPAPH syntax. See Help
Topics. Type "syntax converter" into the search box. Select "TABLES and IGRAPH Command
Syntax Converter" from the search results.
TableLooks created in versions prior to SPSS 16.0 cannot be used in SPSS 16.0 or later versions.
SPSS Tables Original (Basic Tables, General Tables, Multiple Response Tables, Tables of
Frequencies) user interface is no longer available. Convert your TABLES syntax to CTABLES
syntax using the syntax converter. See Help Topics. Type "syntax converter" into the search
box. Select "TABLES and IGRAPH Command Syntax Converter" from the search results.
SPSS Production Facility jobs (*.spp) created in SPSS 15 or earlier must be converted to release
16.0 and later format (*.spj). A conversion utility is available to do this. See Help Topics.
Type " production facility" into the search box. Select "Converting Production Facility files"
from the search results.
The Draft Viewer is no longer supported. There are two alternatives for creating text output
similar to the Draft Viewer. You can Export viewer output with text options, or use the Output
Management System (OMS).
Unicode encoding is the default mode starting with SPSS version 21, which affects the width of
string variables. Data files saved in Unicode encoding cannot be read by versions of SPSS
Statistics prior to 16.0. For information on switching to the traditional code page mode, See Help
Topics. Type Unicode encoding.
