BROTHERLY LOVE, SELF-SACRIFICE AND INSPIRATION FROM A DEPARTED FRIEND
By Pat Morgan

Brother, can you spare a kidney?

Thats what Reverend James
Cunningham (aka Fr. Jim, a
Roman Catholic priest) must
have been thinking as he was
running low on options. After
almost a year of dialysis, the
only way to stay alive was by
having a kidney transplant,
preferably from a living donor.
The odds of that happening are
about 100,000 to 1. But amazing things started to happen.
A product of Woodside,
Queens, Cunningham has had
many connections with the
Rockaway community over the
years. His parents, Eileen and
Robert, would take Jim and
his three older siblings to the
beach when they were young.
He served eight years as parish priest and then as Pastor
at St. Mary Star of the Sea/St.
Gertrude in Far Rockaway. In

Father Jim (l) and Pat Nash

2015, he was assigned to St.

Francis de Sales in Belle Harbor, where he celebrated his

21st year in the priesthood this

past May.
While serving as Pastor at

Holy Name parish in Park

Slope, Brooklyn in 2014, Fr.
Jim was first made aware of the
problem with his kidneys after
a routine checkup. Cunninghams results came back showing that his potassium levels
were out of control. He was
subsequently hospitalized at
Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, where the doctors found
that one kidney was small and
the other wasnt functional.
There was no history of kidney
disease in the Cunningham
family. The failure was attributed to low-grade high blood
pressure taking its toll over a
number of years. The doctors
concluded that Fr. Jim would
need a kidney transplant. So,
the search for potential living
donors began with his siblings.
Cunninghams eldest brother Robert was a 3 out of 6 antigen match (one of the tests

Balderdash and Poppycock

So this guy stops me on the street

and says Of all the cockamamie
things Ive read in Boyleing Points
the thing about the bar of soap was
the top. But Im crazy so I tried it
and it worked.
For those of you who missed
last weeks column, I wrote about
the weird but fail-proof way to get
rid of foot cramps. You put a bar
of soap near your feet when you
go to bed and presto! cramps
be gone. Some people claim you
shouldnt use Dial or Dove but Ive
used both and they worked magic
as well any other bar.
Weird but true. But not as weird
as hearing somebody use the word
cockamamie. That threw me. He
kept talking and might have given me the nuclear launch codes
or the meaning of life but I didnt
hear because hed already sent me
back in time, triggering my inner

thesaurus. Cockamamie? Oh,

balderdash! What a bunch of malarkey. Thats silly prattle.
The guy is still talking and Im
thinking of all the times I say
bullshit and so-and-so is full of
shit when there are other words
and terms that are so more artful.
Baloney, hogwash, drivel, and
poppycock are words I could use
but instead I stay in the gutter. As
they say in this political climate, I
identify as a Neanderthal.
In another recent column I
mentioned how important neighbors are. Get a lousy one and it can
be like pain its the first thing you
think about in the morning.
But good neighbors are a gift.
One reader sent me a note saying
a couple of his neighbors, since deceased, helped him through tough
times and showed how to be a good
neighbor which echoed the words
of his father. My dad always said it
was important to be a good neighbor. Take care of the elderly and
those that need a helping hand. I
think Rockaway (and The Graybeards) exemplify that. The rest of
the world should pay attention.

His mention of the Graybeards got me to thinking. The

non-profit group that has helped
so many really got its start because of neighbors whod become friends.
One neighbor introduced the
other neighbor to a friend. Those
guys started coaching youth basketball together. And then the
neighbors and other friends
started playing ball themselves.
After a few years, a collection of
guys were in position to put to-

gether something formal and pretty extraordinary. So if you break it

down, the Graybeards got their
start from people starting out as
strangers, being good neighbors
and becoming friends.
So the moral of the story is good
neighbors can make a world of difference.
**Because I cursed in this column the publisher is suspending Boyleing Points through the
month of August. Heres hoping
you enjoy the rest of the summer.

the Rockaway Triple Crown
Summer Series. The series
began with the BCAC Shamrock Shuffle/Dawn's Fun
Run on July 15 and then the
Kevin Kearney Rockapulco
Run on July 22. The Triple

Crown will be awarded at

the Graybeards Family Run,
to the male and the female
with the best combined
time in all three races. Registration for the Graybeards
Family Run will be at St.
Francis de Sales tonight,
Thursday, July 28 from 6-8.
Day of Race registration is
from 4-6 p.m.

Ceremony
for 9/11 Victim

Lisa King Johnson was

one of the many local residents who died in the
World Trade Center on
9/11. Beach 124th and
the Boardwalk had been
named Lisa King Johnson
Promenade in her honor,
but the sign was destroyed
along with the boardwalk
during Hurricane Sandy.
On Thursday, July 28 at

6:30 p.m., there will be a

small ceremony to replace
the sign on Beach 124th,
where Lisa had lived. Join
Senator Joseph P. Addabbo,
friends, family and neighbors as the sign is placed
along the new boardwalk.
It is expected that similar
signs for other local victims will also be replaced
at a later time.

Lots of people complimented
us on the story we did on the
Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges
Bridge but a couple of people
pointed out a missing factoid: the
toll on the bridge for the longest
time was ten cents. If youre
paying cash these days it costs $4.
Used to be a basket youd toss a
dime into on your way over the
bridge. A dime!
The ten cents toll was instituted
when the bridge opened in 1937
and wasnt raised until 1972 35
years in between toll hikes. Well
sign up for that now.
*****
A hipster migration heading
this way? The L Train will be
shut down for 18 months for an
overhaul starting in 2019. The
tunnel and tracks were Sandy
damaged and the MTA figured
it was better to just shut it
down rather than doing partial
shutdowns which would have

just prolonged the fix. More than

200,000 take the L from Brooklyn
to Manhattan each day. So will
the disruption cause some of the
Williamsburg denizens to look
elsewhere? Maybe The A train
wont seem so bad

Overheard in a local restaurant.
We loved it and wanted to stay
overnight. There was nothing.
Even The LaQuinta was sold
out. Thats the new hotel on
Beach 43rd, which by the way,
also sold out on Monday night.
With more restaurants and
entertainment choices Rockaway

high demand. And its only the

Whits at Steak?
By Lou Pastina

I have been to some of the best

steakhouses around, Mannys in
Minneapolis; Gino & Georgettis in
Chicago; the flagstaff Mortons in
Chicago. But New York City has the
best steakhouses in the country,
hands down, no questions asked!
I mean Peter Lugers in the shadow of the Williamsburg Bridge has
got it down to a science. Gruff waiters, check. Excellent steak, double
check. But if you expect to pay with
a credit card you are in trouble be-

cause they dont take them, unless

it is a Peter Lugers card. So have
plenty of cash when you go.
The Old Homestead has been
around forever and if it could tell
stories, it would probably make
you blush being so close to the
old West Side Highway. Today
the meatpacking district with the
addition of the High Line and the
new Whitney Museum is packin
them in! But the Old Homestead
seems to be a forgotten icon from
a bygone era. But very much worth
the stop.

The Rockaway Times

Wolfgangs has two locations I

like: one in Tribeca on Greenwich
and one on Park Avenue. They
have franchised but thats ok in
this case. Wolfgang once worked
at Lugers but decided to open
his own joint. The waiters are less
grumpy here and they take credit
cards. Their steaks are to die for,
and their martinis arent bad either. Ask for Kettle One, dirty, with
blue cheese stuffed olives. Makes
for quite a night!
Smith & Wollenskys is interesting; they are now a chain and are
everywhere these days. Still make
a great steak, and their iconic green
and white dcor is pretty cool. But
what I like about their midtown
3rd Avenue establishment is that
they are sitting on probably a hundred million dollars in air rights.
They dont seem to care however
and are pleased to cook steak. Gotta admire that attitude!
Mortons is also a chain these
days and the 45th Street location
does an excellent job of cooking things just right. Ruths Chris
falls into the same category in my
opinion. Some people love the
way they fillet their steaks in butter. I have to admit, hard to resist.

I like the back-story on the place. It

was a steakhouse called Chris, and
Ruth, a single mom, bought it and
made it Ruths Chris steakhouse.
My favorite however is Sparks
on 46th Street. They make great
martinis, steaks, and lobsters. And
what rhymes with lobster? Why,
mobster of course. It was outside
this venue that Paulie Castellano
was gunned down coming out
of his limo, throwing Sparks into
NYC history forever.
But here is the real news, you
see all those places do a great steak
and you have to drive to the city to
get one. But not anymore! Whits
on Rockaway Beach Blvd. has a
45-ounce steak for $60 bucks that
can feed three grown men, and
probably a small family of five. I had
this steak with my band mates, and
let me tell you it was cooked to perfection. I was just at the Palm recently and we had to send the steak back
three times. Whoever is doing the
cooking at Whits knows what they
are doing it is this summers food
recommendation without question.
But beware, Whits dcor, ambience
and social setting are an acquired
taste; but, you will not get a better
steak anywhere, you betta believe it!

The Rockaway Times

Earlier this year I became

President of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association
(RBCA). I have the pleasure
and honor to serve with some
of the most amazingly dedicated volunteers to civic duty on
the peninsula.
In case you were wondering, the RBCA's primary focus
area is Beach 73rd Street to
Beach 108th Street-Beach to
Bay.
This time of year you can
imagine there is a lot to deal
within the RBCA's focus and
we really have to step up our
game quite a bit! We have, by
far, the greatest concentration of beach visitors coming
"down for the day." We have
the good fortune of the larg-

est concentration of bars on

the peninsula. We deal with
a sewage treatment plant
that keeps on giving. We
have a bridge which acts as
the gateway to the peninsula. We have a fire house and
a police station. We have two
strip malls. We are the crossroads of the peninsula. We
have the largest concentration of tall buildings on the
peninsula. We have the largest free public parking lot on
the peninsula. We have the
awful plague of 100:1 ratio
of cars looking for a parking spot on every given good
beach day. We have six separate school sites. We have the
largest mental health nursing
home on the peninsula. We

are in line with not one, but

two of the most active airport
runways in the world. We
have NYC's busiest and most
active surfing community.
We have NYC's biggest chocolate factory. We have the
great food concessions on the
boardwalk, a bustling business district with cool stores
and many great restaurants
and of course some the greatest-most diverse population
on the peninsula.
If the focus area of the
RBCA, a community of this
size and scope, were anywhere else outside New York
City we would easily be our
own city. Like Long Beach,
Long Island or Asbury Park,
NJ with our magnitude, compared to what we are as a civic, we would have our own
city council or town board.
Unfortunately, we don't
have the good fortune of a
legitimate self-government
guiding our own way. We do
however have the enormously good fortune of having an
executive board of the Rockaway Beach Civic who is by

Page 11
far some of the hardest working volunteers on the Peninsula. With Bridget Klapinski
and Eddy Pastore as co-vice
Presidents, Marni Rhyne as
Secretary and Grace Miller as
Treasurer, the wheels of the
RBCA certainly do turn. We
also have as executive board
appointees, Michelle Gunn
and Jeremy Jones who help
guide our way in an amazing
way.
Within the Rockaway Beach
Civic focus area we do have
so much be thankful for. We
have a lot going on and many
issues to address on a daily
basis. Together this awesome
group of volunteers and the
rest of the Rockaway Beach
Civic members make our
little part of the world that
much better.
So a special THANK YOU to
Bridget, Eddy, Marni, Grace,
Michelle and Jeremy and all
of the RBCA for all you do in
making our part of the Rockaway Peninsula that much
better! A strong heart and
soul makes the peninsula the
greatest strip of land on earth.

A Veterinarians Physical Examination

By Ryan Fortier

A visit to the veterinarians

office usually consists of two
major parts: the initial taking
of a history and the secondary physical examination.
While the purpose and advantages of taking a history
are often rather apparent, the
physical examination is often more mysterious. Here
is what your veterinarian is
looking for in his or her physical examination.
Veterinarians often begin
their physical examination
with the head and then work
backwards, towards the tail.
Placing a hand over one eye
and making a motion towards the other eye tests for
the menace reflex. A visual
dog (unless the patient is a
young puppy or kitten) will
blink or pull away from that
threatening gesture. This is
our primary indicator of vision. We also check the sclera, or whites of the eye, for
any signs of inflammation

Dr. Fortier

such as prominent blood vessels or discharge. Ensuring

that both pupils are the same
size is important unequal
pupil size (anisocoria) can
indicate a range of neurological or other disorders.
A quick look inside the ears
can reveal red (erythema-

tous) skin, which is a sign of

infections or allergies. One
can also easily judge if there
is pus, excessive earwax (also
known as ceruminous debris), or anatomic abnormalities.
Examining the nose can reveal exudate such as blood,
pus, or mucous. (A recurring
theme of the physical exam is
checking any orifice for leaking material.) If a veterinarian suspects an issue with airflow in the nasal cavity (such
as with a nasal polyp), he or
she can place a glass slide or
cotton ball in front of each
nostril to assess air flow. A
vet may also take a quick listen to the nose as the animal
breathes to ascertain if there
is any impairment to airflow.
The mouth (also known as
the oral cavity) is perhaps the
most important body cavity
to examine. A quick glance
and feel of the gums will let
us know if there is adequate
blood flow.
If gums are
pale, blue, or tacky (dry and

sticky), there may be a problem with proper oxygenation

and blood flow. Teeth can be
checked for the presence of
dental tartar. Foreign bodies
such as sticks or string can often be found in the oral cavity
and can be a source of pain or
cause a patient to be unable
to eat properly. Your veterinarian may also open your
animals mouth to see if this
causes pain. Once open, a vet
can place a finger at the back
of your animals tongue and
see if they can get a normal
gag reflex. The absence of a
gag reflex can be an indicator
of neurologic dysfunction.
Palpation (careful touching of an area) of the trachea
(windpipe) should be performed. If this easily elicits
a cough, tracheal collapse or
other disorders may be considered. In cats, we often
palpate the thyroid glands to
see if they are enlarged.
At this point, your vet may

move away from the head to
tail rule to feel all five sets of
palpable lymph nodes. Lymph
nodes are organs spread
throughout the body that filter lymph (a fluid collected in
the lymphatic vessels, filtered
in the lymph nodes, and returned to the blood) and collect white blood cells to help
them mature and monitor for
pathogens. Enlarged lymph
nodes can indicate a local infection or spread of cancer
(metastasis).
Auscultation (listening via
stethoscope) of the heart
and lungs is one of the most
important parts of the physical exam. Listening to the
heart will reveal heart murmurs, which are sounds due
to abnormal blood flow in the
heart. Not all heart murmurs
indicate a clinical problem,
but they often warrant a further work-up. A muffled heart
sound may indicate a buildup of fluid in the sac around
the heart, which is known as
pericardial effusion.

As for the lungs, quiet lung

sounds can indicate air or
fluid in the chest. If the lungs
are quieter ventrally (towards
the stomach), then there is
likely fluid because fluid will
settle due to gravity. Quieter lung sounds dorsally (towards the back) is more likely air due to the fact that air
will rise up. Increased lung
sounds and abnormal noises
such as crackles or wheezes
can indicate a wide variety of
pulmonary (lung-based) diseases.
Palpation of the ribs, combined with looking at your
animals overall body shape,
will let give us an idea of how
healthy their weight is. Palpation of the abdomen can
reveal any distention due
to fluid or masses. Pain is
checked for and may indicate
conditions such as pancreatitis. Especially in cats, one
can often palpate the kidneys
and check if they are enlarged
or otherwise abnormal. The
bladder can often be palpated and stones (if present) can
occasionally be felt.

The Rockaway Times

The limbs should all be

palpated (the right and left
limbs should be palpated at
the same time so as to check
for symmetry). A veterinarian can detect muscle atrophy
(wasting) or pain if certain
areas are touched. The paws
are often one by one onto the
ground to detect if the animal
can sense this. If they cannot,
it is called a proprioceptive
deficit and is indicative of a
neurologic dysfunction.
The rectal examination is
often saved for last. In male
dogs, we can check the prostate to see if it is enlarged or
has any associated masses.
In both sexes, we also check
to see if the anal glands are
distended with fluid. Anal
glands are just inside of the
rectum and fill with a scented fluid which is normally
expressed when a dog or cat
defecates. If they fail to be
expressed, they can become
swollen, uncomfortable, or
even infected.
That concludes a basic
physical examination, which
ideally should be performed

1 2 times a year on a healthy

animal. There are also more
in-depth examinations for
different body systems. A
good ophthalmic examination will examine both the
exterior and interior eye,
as well as checking multiple aspects of its function.
A neurological exam checks
multiple reflexes in all limbs
as well as other areas of the
body. An orthopedic exam
will examine the mobility of
all joints in various ways. So
remember, when your veterinarian props your pet up on
the exam table and seems to
pet him, he or she is doing a
lot more than listening to the
heart and feeling for obvious
masses. A good physical examination is an incredibly
important diagnostic tool
and is often the first step in
figuring out what is wrong
with your pet.

Step Right Up
SIDESHOW, STRONGMEN AND PIN-UPS, OH MY!
By Katie McFadden

Step right up and see strongmen conduct feats of strength

and performers pull off
death-defying escapes. The
first-ever Rockaway Beach Sideshow and Strongman Festival is
coming to town this weekend.
Head to the Beach 97th
Concession at 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 31 and prepare to be
amazed. This free event will
feature strongmen, illusionists,
performers and pin-ups.
Sideshows have long been
popular in Coney Island, but
performers Adam Cardone and
Adam Realman, and Bradach
Walsh of the Rockaway Beach
Surf Club are bringing the sideshow to a different beach this
time. Coney has got its own stuff
going on and they dont need extra flare, so were bringing it to
Rockaway, Cardone said.
Adam Realman, a strongman
himself, will be the MC of the

event. Realman may perform a

sword-swallowing act or show
off his strongman skills by ripping thick phone books with his
bare hands. Strongman Steve
Weiner isnt called The Crusher for nothing. Hes been
known to deadlift as much as
547 pounds and roll metal frying pans with his hands. Chris
Wonder Schoeck may only
be 57 and 155 pounds, but
dont let his looks fool you.
Steel bars dont stand a chance
against him as he bends them
barehanded. Schoeck was even
the subject of a documentary
called Bending Steel which
showcased his abilities. The
audience may even get an extra
special treat as one of the performers may attempt to break a
record.
Rockaway
resident
and
vaudeville magician Adam
Cardone will be living a claustrophobics nightmare as he
performs a dangerous milk can

escape. During the stunt, Cardone will enter milk can full of
water, which will be padlocked,
and he will attempt to get out
of it. Cardone has performed
the stunt publicly four times
before, but it will be a first
for Rockaway. This has never been done here before, he
said. There are only a handful
of guys that actually perform
this stunt and now people are
going to get a chance to see it
done in Rockaway.
Cardone says, I guarantee people will see things that
theyve never seen before and
its going to be really awesome
stuff. Maybe theyve seen some
of this stuff in superhero comic books, but this is all live. He
hopes to make the Sideshow
and Strongman Festival an annual occurrence. By coming
out, you support the cause. If
we get a big turnout, next years
show is going to be even better
and it will get better every year.

The free event is sponsored

by Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum,
which uses a pin-up girl in its
logo. This serves as inspiration
for the second portion of the
event: a pin-up girl contest.
Starting at 7 p.m., all ladies are
welcome to flaunt their best
pin-up look, whether its a classic dress or swimsuit and prizes
such as gift certificates to local spots will be given to the
best pin-up look.
The fun wont stop after the
event is over. Live band, Rico
Vibes will perform at the concession starting at 7:30 p.m.
and the official after party
for the sideshow and strongman event, also sponsored by
Sailor Jerry, will continue on
at the Rockaway Beach Surf
Club.

There was a lot of moaning

and parrots for the crew.
Water balloons filled, pirate garb worn, swords slung,
coolers iced and filled with
copious amounts of grog, the
only matter left was to procure
a boat for their planned junket. This took a little longer
than expected but ultimately
one was obtained. Of course
that fact makes me wonder

the Capt. Mike somewhere
on the waters of Jamaica Bay.
About an hour after leaving
port and many cups (cans) of
grog (beer) later, one of the
lads spotted the Capt. Mike in
the distance near the Marine
Parkway Bridge and confusing

The sun had passed its midpoint in the overhead sky and
the barely perceptible morning breeze had disappeared
leaving in its wake only the
humid stagnant afternoon
heat as the forty women made
their way aboard the 70 foot
fishing charter "Capt. Mike"
in Howard Beach last Sunday. This year's Broad Channel VFW annual "Girl's Only"
fishing trip had been re-chris-

tened in memory of a much

loved member who passed
away back away in 2014 as
the organization's "Annual Suzanne Grillman Fishing Tournament." Suzanne
would have loved the idea of
the all-girl fishing trip being
named after her as she always
believed that it was much better for a woman to give a man
a fish to eat for the day but to
never, ever, teach that same
man to fish because he will
only wind up sitting in a boat
drinking beer all day!
Shortly after 1 p.m. Mike
Cannon fired up the "Capt.
Mike" and pulled away from
the dock and slowly headed
out into Jamaica Bay in search
of keeper-sized fluke. Now
this is where the story gets interesting. As the ladies were
setting about to enjoy their
afternoon of fishing and female camaraderie they were
completely unaware of the
fact that their male counterparts left behind on the island

Continued from Page 20

Herman Melville with Robert

Louis Stevenson, yelled out
to his comrades "Thar she
blows!"
Approaching the Capt.
Mike, the crew hurriedly
distributed the water balloons among themselves as
they ducked out of sight below the boat's gunwale and
waited until their smaller
craft was alongside the larger
ship whereupon they rose up
and unleashed a broadside
of water balloons towards
the women who were fishing
from the deck of the Capt.
Mike while waving their plastic swords and yelling, "Ahoy
wenches, here's a little something for all of ye!" Truth be
told, the ladies gave as good
as they got with some catching the water balloons in mid flight and returning them to
their senders!
With all their balloons
spent, the wannabe pirate
laddies broke off their engagement with the Capt. Mike and

turned tail back to safe port

in Broad Channel. Arriving at
the VFW around 3 p.m. they
spent the next hour or so regaling all present with the grand
tales of their pirate raid upon
the girls on Capt. Mike! Somewhere around 4:15 p.m. the
grand tale telling gave way to
a visible nervousness regarding the reaction on the part
of the girls to their raid when
they arrived back at the VFW
later that afternoon. When
the ladies did arrive back it
was non-eventful with most
smiling and simply remarking
that they all had a great time.
I pulled one girl aside and inquired about the possibility of
payback. She smiled, winked
and in a hushed tone said
"Pirates my ass! All of these
guys are a canvas short of a
full sail...I doubt any of them
have ever heard of Anne Bonney because if they had they
would realize that there will
be pay back, they simply know
neither the day nor the hour!"
Broad Channel, why would
anyone want to live anywhere
else?

Aldo and Bugsy and

Hen, Oh My...
By Kathryn Helms

(Editors note: The Be Well Be

Happy Column is handed over
to Kathryn Helms this week because keeping old friends is a
great way to stay well and be
happy).
As I walked along the beach
on Saturday there were so
many different groups having
beach parties. This particular
party was celebrating life and
all that it brings, good and bad.
It amazed me that they were

Daniel S
Mirkin OD
Mirkin
Vision

still so closely knit from grammar school. This is what Rockaway really is all about. We are
the DFD's but we have tremendous respect for the originals.
The notice went out to all
committee members. A meeting would take place on Beach
134th Street on Saturday, July
23, for an afternoon of fun and
festivities. The objective was
to bring a group of old friends
together--some who see each
other regularly, others who haven't seen each other in close

to thirty years--to reminisce,

catch up, and enjoy a day on
our beloved beach. Twenty
or so of us showed up, many
with spouses and various children. There were games, food,
drinks and a very hot sun. An
unexpected sad event delayed
a few, so we were all reminded
how lucky we were to be there.
It was as if no time at all had
passed.
It all goes back to St. Francis de Sales for the most part-sixth grade? Seventh?? And
the swish Brooklyn prep
school just to mix it up a bit.
We lived for the weekends
when we'd meet up at the
school gym (Sister Golden
Hair anyone?) or the pizza
shop (the old one closer to
Cronston, eons before Plum
Tomatoes) or somebody's
house (whose parents are out
on Friday?) Later, there were
concerts--so many concerts,
where a certain someone always managed to get the tickets, order the bus, manage the
group, and provide roundtrip entertainment to boot.
(Thank you, Bugsy!). And there

The Rockaway Times

were the bars, parties, proms,
more bars...and the beach. Always the beach.
Then came college-or not--marriage(s), careers,
overseas assignments, loads
of wonderful children (and
grandchildren!), lives cut
short. This group has weathered countless life challenges and manages to do so with
grace and fortitude. Some are
going through particularly trying times right now. But there
we were, on the beach, with a
smile, a positive attitude...and
a cold beer or two.
The meeting ran way past
quitting time and we covered
most items on the agenda.
(Thank you, Aldo!) The last
item was a quick recap of what
it means to be a DFD. (If you
have to ask, you are one.) I
was worried as I no longer live
in Rockaway nor own a home
there.
"But were you born and
raised here?" Rich asked.
"Absolutely," I answered.
"Not to worry, then," he
said. "You're a lifer."
Meeting adjourned.

MTA Study Opens Doors to Innovative Choices

By Brendan B. Read

The Metropolitan Transportation Authoritys Rockaway

Beach Line (RBL aka QueensRail) study will hopefully result in an innovative answer to
Queens transportation needs.
There are many options for the
MTA to examine for their economic, environmental, and social benefits and weigh against
their costs, impacts, and funding sources. Here is a brief look
at several of these choices.
Long Island Rail Road
(LIRR) to Howard Beach/A
Train transfer. This may be the
simplest, fastest to execute,
and the lowest cost alternative
by rebuilding the existing right
of way and track connections.
There will be space on the LIRR
for the RBL trains as it would
reopen after the LIRR opens to
Grand Central Terminal. Fares
would be at the New York City
Transit level with transfers to
enable mobility and for social
justice.
However, LIRR and subway
trains are not permitted to
share tracks south of Howard
Beach. But in 2012 the federal government approved the
Stadler diesel light rail transit
(LRT) car design to enable Denton County (Texas) Transportation Authoritys A Train to
share tracks with freight trains.
With the similarity of LIRR
and subway loading gauges
and equipment the MTA may
win approval for track sharing,
which would avoid a costly
new trestle to the Rockaways.
If track sharing is not allowed,
the LIRR can cost-effectively serve the entire Rockaway
Peninsula with combined Far
Rockaway and Rockaway Park
trains, split-merging i.e. automatically uncoupling and coupling at Howard Beach. The A
would then terminate at Howard Beach.
Direct midtown subway.
Since the 1930s there have
been plans to convert the RBL

to subway from Queens Blvd.

This option would provide direct service to the Rockaways,
sharing tracks with the A.
However it requires an expensive new underground connection at Queens Blvd. Manhattan access would have to be
carefully obtained by changing
routes e.g. extending the R to
the Rockaways.
Montauk Branch LRT, subway, and LIRR options. There
is strong interest in Montauk
Branch mass transit restoration as demonstrated by calls
for LRT. But LRT could also be
branched to the Rockaways;
the Montauk Branch was the
original RBL route. LRT equipment can share subway tracks
if fitted for high platforms and
for third rail power collection. But LRT requires transfers onto overcrowded subway
trains at Long Island City that
risks diminishing its appeal.
Alternatively the MTA can dust
off its Montauk-Archer subway
proposal, look at an LIRR option, and with RBL branches.
The costly track connections
they entail may be justified if
they can generate significantly higher ridership through
one-seat service into midtown
Manhattan.
SBS RBL. This option, suggested by the Woodhaven
Residents Block Association,
opens the door to a bus rapid transit (BRT) network connecting central and eastern
Queens into midtown. Though
faster and safer than SBS on
Woodhaven Blvd it poses issues
such as enabling full-scale BRT
on the Long Island Expressway
and in the Queens-Midtown
Tunnel and requiring subway
transfers like at Aqueduct. Also
buses, including hybrids, may
cost more to operate and may
create higher noise and air
emissions than electric trains.
There are two key outstanding issue-solving opportunities
with these options. The first is
Rails with Trails. All RBL op-

tions could enable bikeways/

walkways while maintaining
the Forest Hills ballfields, and
greatly improve transit access
to them, unlike the controversial QueensWay trails without
rails. The RBL berm could be
replaced with a sleek T-shaped
elevated structure that would
permit these uses as they
would lie underneath.
Alternatively, the RBL can
be buried but at much greater cost. The Montauk options
would avoid these expensive-to-resolve issues that
could further bolster their
business cases.
The second is improved JFK
Airport access. The AirTrain
guideway has been designed
for LIRR, subway, and potentially LRT conversion. LIRR
and subway options would al-

low for split-merging at ideally

Aqueduct to provide one-seat
rides to Manhattan. LRT offers
a Long Island City-JamaicaJFK
Airport-Aqueduct-Long
Island City bidirectional loop
with multiple transit connections. BRT can also link JFK
Airport but it may duplicate
the AirTrain for off-airport
customers. But all of these
solutions have sufficient merit
to warrant detailed analysis.
Brendan Read, a former
Richmond Hill resident, is a
longtime transit advocate, and
is an advisor to the Queens
Public Transportation Committee [www.qptc.org].

Your Skin
Recently a reader asked me to
write a column about melasma.
She thought it would be relevant
to Rockaway because the condition is related to sun exposure,
and I agree with her. Melasma is
actually a common skin problem.
It causes brown to gray-brown
patches on the face, although
rarely it can appear on other parts
of the body that are exposed to the
sun such as forearms and neck.
Freckles (medically ephelides)
are smaller-scale versions of the
same condition. About 90 percent of cases of melasma occur in
women and the darker a persons
skin is, the more likely it is to occur. It is quite common in pregnancy and it called the mask of
pregnancy. Melasma patches

typically occur on the cheeks,

forehead, bridge of the nose, upper lip and chin. The patches are
often symmetrical (occur on both
sides of the face) and irregular.
There are no symptoms however
people often seek treatment because of how they look.
The cause of melasma is unclear. What is clear is that the
color-making skin cells (melanocytes) for some reason become
over-activated and produce too
much skin pigment (melanin).
People with darker skin have
more melanocytes and produce
more melanin making them more
prone to the condition. People
with a blood relative with melasma are more likely to get it themselves. The condition is triggered

The Rockaway Times

by sun exposure, which is why it

is more common in summer. A
change in hormones can also be a
trigger. This includes pregnancy,
birth control pills, and hormone
replacement therapies.
Melasma may look like other skin conditions, which is why
a skin biopsy may be necessary
to confirm the diagnosis. While
most cases subside on their own,
especially when the trigger is
withdrawn, some cases of melasma can be exceedingly stubborn
and difficult to correct. Dermatologists who treat this condition
use topical creams, lotions and
gels that contain hydroquinone
(an anti-malarial), tretinoin or
corticosteroids. Some prescriptions contain all three agents. If
this treatment fails, other treatments can be used including
skin peels, microdermabrasion
and dermabrasion. If treatment
is successful, maintenance therapy is needed to keep it from returning. Of course the most common treatment is sun protection.
Choosing gentle skin care products that dont burn or sting is also
important and avoiding waxing is
important too. Waxing to remove

hair can cause skin inflammation, which can worsen melasma.

Talk to your dermatologist about
other types of hair removal if you
have this condition.
As an aside, I would like to
touch on a related but totally opposite skin condition vitiligo.
In this condition the melanocytes either stop functioning or
die, causing the skin to become
pale white. The pale patches can
appear anywhere on the body.
While vitiligo, like melasma, occurs in people of all skin tones,
it is most pronounced in people
of darker skin tones. The cause is
also unknown but there has been
some research that points to an
auto-immune condition which
causes the body to attack its own
melanocytes. Like melasma there
are no symptoms but people seek
treatment because of their appearance. Unfortunately there is
no successful treatment of vitiligo and, unlike melasma, the skin
changes are permanent.

FR. JIM AND PATRICK

Continued from Page 3

to determine if the donor and

recipient are compatible), but
wasnt eligible for health reasons. His second oldest brother, Patrick, was the better candidate to donate because he
was a perfect 6 out of 6 antigen match. Unfortunately, he
was disqualified because during the testing process, they
found bilateral kidney stones.
The doctors also discovered an
undisclosed life-threatening
ailment, which was promptly treated (He is doing well,
by the way.) This sequence of
events actually turned out to
be a blessing in disguise. By
the gesture of one brother offering to save anothers life,
Patrick Cunningham saved his
own.
Faced with this setback,
Fr. Jim needed to start dialysis immediately to stabilize
the kidney, which began in
September of 2015. The grueling regimen was four hours a
day, three times a week plus
travel time. The donor search
would continue, but it felt
awkward for Cunningham to
solicit non-family volunteers
to donate one of their kidneys.
Living donors provide the recipient many advantages for
survival: better long-term outcomes, shorter wait time for
the transplant, a surgery date
can be planned, living kidneys
start working in the recipients
body sooner plus they have a
lower rejection rate. The word
started spreading that Fr. Jim
needed a kidney.
Enter Patrick Nash, a product of East 29th Street in Marine Park, Brooklyn, and no
stranger to the Rockaway peninsula. Having summered at
the Breezy Point Surf Club with
his family for many years, Nash
also played basketball in the St.
Francis Summer Classics. His
first apartment happened to be
in Rockaway. Pats sister Kerry Nash Charles (who Fr. Jim
jokingly refers to as the sister
of my kidney) and her family
have lived in Rockaway Park for
many years. Nash attended Xavier High School in Manhattan
where he befriended the current Rockaway boxing legend,
Jo Jo OGrady. Like many of his
contemporaries, Pat joined the

THURSDAY, JULY 28, 2016

FDNY in 2000.
Pat had met Fr. Jim during
his initial clerical assignment,
a five-year tenure starting in
1995 as Associate Pastor at
Good Shepherd Parish in Marine Park. The two of them
were actually introduced by a
mutual friend, FDNY Captain
Timothy Stackpole, who subsequently perished on 9/11.
Pats mother, Fran was a regular at the 7 a.m. weekday mass
that Fr. Jim frequently celebrated. Before he knew it, Cunningham was attending postmass breakfasts every Monday
and Thursday with her and
other parishioners, eventually
becoming a frequent dinner
guest at the Nash family table.
Fran was ultimately the person
who informed her son that Fr.
Jim needed a kidney to survive.
In order for a living person to
donate a kidney, the recipient
needs to authorize the donors
request before proceeding. Eager to move things along, Nash
had to pester the reluctant
Cunningham three times before he finally submitted Pats
paperwork. Once the papers
were in, things happened at
lightning speed. Nash, a natural
athlete ran through the gamut of
medical tests, which examined
his blood properties, kidney
functions and any predisposition to adult diabetes. Fortunately, all tests passed with flying colors. Nash turned out to
be a 4 out of 6 antigen match,
enough to move forward.
At the same time, the word
continued to spread to a now
wider audience that the beloved Fr. Jim, a man who touched
so many lives, was in need of
a kidney. Besides Nash, others immediately stepped up.
Friends as far away as Florida were sending in paperwork to be tested. Another
close friend, Tara Stackpole,
wife of the late Timmy, began
organizing a campaign to recruit volunteers. The reaction
was so overwhelming that the
transplant office advised Cunningham to stop asking people to respond. At that point,
20 people in total were tested
with seven unprecedented donor matches.
Nash never blinked an eye
and went full speed ahead

with the process of donating

his kidney. The man saved
my life, Cunningham said.
The Nashs family circle is no
stranger to organ donation either. Kerrys brother-in-law,
Eamon Charles, also on the
FDNY, donated his kidney
to his niece Aileen. Eamon
didnt miss a beat when he decided to donate. He gave me
inspiration, Nash said.
The events had unfolded
rapidly. It took only six weeks
from when Nash was medically approved for donation until the actual transplant. The
successful procedure was performed on March 8, 2016 at the
Columbia University Medical
Center in northern Manhattan
by Nephrologist David J. Cohen M.D., who coincidentally was a neighbor of Fr. Jims
friend, Kathy OHagan.
When most people hear that
a living person is donating an
organ to someone in need,
the first question is usually
Why? The answer for Nash
was simple: It all goes back
to an inspirational quote from
Timmy Stackpole: The greatest high you can ever get in
life is helping someone and
making a difference in life.
He also references Stackpoles
favorite movie, Its A Wonderful Life, where the protagonist,
George Bailey is fortunate to
realize the effect that one man
has on the lives of others. Its
all about Timmys message
and not expecting anything in
return, Nash said.
Nash puts his view of an organ donation into perspective
by comparing the risk that he
faces as a firefighter. His job
requires him to enter a volatile
and unpredictable situation,
versus the risk of dealing with
an organ transplant where
medical professionals operate
in a controlled environment.
Inspired by Cunninghams
homilies over the years, Nash,
like other congregants, felt like
Fr. Jim was talking directly to
him. He helps people on a
daily basis and affects so many
lives. I am lucky to be his donor, Nash said.
Nash admitted that the recovery was initially more painful than he expected, but it
subsided after a few weeks. He
too was amazed at the support

The Rockaway Times

he received from his family,
friends as well as the FDNY,
who was 1000 percent supportive and cooperative which
made a difference in my recovery, according to Nash. He
was back on the job, albeit on
light duty, after only six weeks.
Nash is looking forward to returning to work at Ladder 147
aka Pride a Flatbush. Besides
being active in the FDNY Captain Timothy Stackpole Foundation, Nash also performs
assistant coach duties for the
Junior Varsity Basketball team
at Fontbonne High School in
Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
Fr. Jim has been amazed by
the outpouring of generosity
and support from people far
and wide. His boss, Monsignor Bracken, had published
the address of Fr. Jims brother
in Milford, N.J. in the weekly
church bulletin when Cunningham was recovering there.
He received 287 get-well cards.
Fr. Jim is doing well these days.
His energy levels are back
to near pre-diagnosis levels.
Cunningham said Never underestimate the generosity of
others. Dont be afraid to give
beyond what you are capable
of. He is living proof of that.
Sunday, April 24, 2016 was a
milestone for Fr. James Cunningham. He celebrated his
first public mass at St. Francis
de Sales since his transplant
nearly seven weeks earlier.
Also present in the large, excited congregation was his
donor, Patrick Nash. Seeing
Fr. Jim up on the altar, doing
what he does best - touching
peoples lives - reaffirmed the
reason why Nash donated his
kidney to him.

Frosted Glass
!

By Artie Wallace

Frosted glass, otherwise

known as privacy glass, is
commonly used for bathroom windows, entrance
door windows, etc. but not
all windows come with the
glass frosted.
Growing up I remember
the film you put on the windows to make them frosted,
but these days there are ways
that allow you to get more
creative than the film of the
old days.
Glass frosting spray is the
best for the creative DIYer. It
comes in a variety of colors
or you can get it in the standard clear. One way you can get
creative when spraying glass
frosting is to use tape to make
a pattern on the glass before

Chicken
Marengo
By Sharon Feldman

Chicken Marengo is a
French dish consisting of a
sauted chicken in oil with
garlic and tomato, garnished
with fried eggs and crayfish.
The dish is similar to chicken la Provenale, but with
the addition of egg and crayfish, which are traditional
to Chicken Marengo but are
now often omitted. The original dish was named to celebrate the Battle of Marengo,
a Napoleonic victory of June
1800.

Ingredients:

1 can (16 ounces) unsalted

frosting dries.
Another way is you can use
stencils. Stencils sounds like

more work, but its actually

simple. First off, find a stencil
you like (craft stores usually
have a good variety). You can
either have someone hold the

stencil in place or you can tape

it. Now this is an old painter's
secret, so dont tell anyone.
With the stencil in place, put
some Vaseline on your finger
and generously wipe it into the
pattern of your stencil. Carefully remove the stencil and repeat
for multiple applications. Be
sure not to touch the area where
you applied the Vaseline.
Spray the glass frosting and
allow it to dry thoroughly. Once
it dries, clean the glass and the
frosting will wipe away where
the Vaseline was (paint and
sprays do not adhere to something that is coated with Vaseline).
Note: Be sure to tape off and/
or cover any/all areas where you
do not want the frosting. As with
all sprays, there will be a lot of
over spray. When frosting something that is indoors, it is advisable to cover an area about three
feet (or more) surrounding the
area you will be spraying.

2016 RBSA Contest

Schedule
Below are the TENTATIVE
dates for the upcoming contest season for Rockaway and
NYC surfing. While some of
these dates might slide further out of the summer season into fall, this is solely
because we want waves for
these events, secondly, and
because we have only finite
space, we need to wait for the
summer Parks Dept. season to end so we dont take

away vital surf areas. For instance, we technically could

say that last weekend was
the lowest point in Rockaway
surfing history. It was so insanely crowded, it was virtually impossible to get a wave
alone, let alone not get hit or
hit someone yourself. At one
point I counted over 115 people in the lineup.
The first contest will be the
newly renamed RBSA youth
series to The NYC Junior Pro-

The Rockaway Times

Am Series. Consisting of two

events, the best surfers to accumulate the most points in
these events will be the winners. The first event will be
September 10 sponsored by
the Gotham Surf Club. The
second event will be sponsored by St. James Clothing
on October 8. These will be
held at the main jetty at 90th
St.
Next up will be the 1st Annual Rockaway Beach Bodysurf Showdown, presented
by the RBSA and the Rockaway Beach Bodysurf Underground on September 17 at
the Box jetty, at 84th Street.
On September 24 we will
have the very first NYC Womens Pro-Am sponsored by
UMAs Restaurant to be held
at the 67th Street jetty. This is
going to be a fantastic event,
especially being the first ever
all female event for surfing
on the Rockaway Peninsula,
bring it on!
Then we slide all the way
out to October 15 which will
be the 3rd Annual NYC Longboard Pro-Am held at the

main jetty. While wholly run

by the RBSA we are still looking for a named sponsor for
this event. If youd like to support our efforts for these contests or any one in particular,
please email info@rbsurfersassociation.org to jump on
board and get your business
associated with some great
groundbreaking events for
the Rockaways but really for
NYC in general.
And finally we will have the
NYC Cold Water Classic with
a waiting period of November 26 till December 4. Jimmy
Brady is the contest director
and this contest will only go
in head-high waves or bigger.
This will be held at the main
90 Street jetty as well. We will
have a pre contest ceremony and also a post contest
awards ceremony. This time
we do have a tentative sponsor but we are always looking
for more.
So there you go, wax up
those sticks, get your game
on and get involved, well see
you on the beach or in the
water!

The Pipeline:
Boarders Surf Shop
By Katie McFadden

Welcome to the family, Steve

and Christian Stathis say to their
customers at Boarders Surf Shop.
Boarders has been a part of the
Rockaway Beach surf scene before it was cool and theyve kept
it going by making customers feel
like family when they come to
this father-son-owned surf shop.
Although it has grown to two
brick-and-mortar shops, plus
three seasonal locations across
the peninsula, Boarders had
some humble beginnings. I
didnt want to open a surf shop,
Steve Stathis, who had worked
for ConEd for 31 years, said. It
took some convincing from his
sons, Christian and Craig, who
had just purchased a house in
Rockaway Beach. A new neighbor, who owned the Tsunami Surf
Shop, was looking to sell and the
Stathis boys were interested. We
werent going to make money
but the novelty of saying I owned
a surf shop with my dad was the
big attraction there, Christian, a
firefighter, said. It took some negotiating, but Steve made an offer and by November 2004, they
owned the Beach 92nd surf shop,
even before the city made the
Beach 90s an official surf spot.
Along with the store came a
limited inventory. We started
with four surfboards for sale,
Christian said. Our friend Chenzo, who makes Time Bomb Surfboards said he would put some
boards in our shop on consignment. We couldnt afford to buy
boards, so he gave us 12 boards to
make it look like a surf shop and
little by little we started to stock up
on other things, Steve said. You
can now find all of your surf and
skateboarding needs and clothing, or rent a board for the day.
It was early on that they decided
to promote local products. We
found out that some local people made t-shirts, so rather than
get in with big brands which you
can get anywhere, we decided to
go with local guys, Steve said. If
you come into the store, youll see
Jimmy Dowds St. James Clothing, Rockaway t-shirts by Sean

Boarders, The RB Original

Aiken, stuff by Karen Traynor and

soon well have Nancy Egan on
board with her FancyThingsByNancy products. We dont have
brand names. Local support
helped keep Boarders afloat in
the beginning. We survived that
first year thanks to friends and
family, Steve said.
By the next year, the Stathis
figured out what was in demand:
board storage. We were in Elegante and the owner said that a
lot of surfers asked to leave their
boards overnight. He said we
cant keep boards in our pizza
store. We looked at each other
and said why dont we build lockers? Steve said. We cleaned out
the backyard by hand and put in a
closet that held maybe 12 boards,
which is the most we thought
we would store. We didnt even
charge at first, we were just happy that people were coming to
the shop and buying wax. We
had no idea it would become a
storage facility that would save
us, Christian said. Boarders now
has 126 lockers, and this summer,
every single one is full. The 24hour locker space that includes
hot showers and changing rooms
feels like home to those who utilize it. Ive overheard people say
theyre from Brooklyn, but theyre
down at Boarders, like they have a
place of their own here, Christian
said. They have also seen locker
customers turn into residents.

They go from lockalocals to bungalocals to local locals. Theyll

rent a locker from us and then a
nearby bungalow for the summer
and eventually they decide they

love it here and they get an apartment or house, Steve said.

In addition to being family oriented, Boarders is also pro-community. The Stathis helped to
launch some big events like the
Richie Allen Memorial Surf Classic in honor of the firefighter and
surfer who died on 9/11, and the
big surf, skate and music festival,
Rockstock and Barrels, along with
Jimmy Dowd and Walker Hornung. They also sponsor teams for
the Summer Classic and Rockaway Volleyball and donate toward
charitable events. Its good to be
involved in the community that
supports you, Steve said.
Boarders Surf Shop is located
at 192 Beach 92nd Street. Theyre
open seven days a week from 10
a.m. to 6 p.m. Boarders on the
Boardwalk is located at the Beach
97th Concession. Call 718-3187997 or check out www.boarderssurfshop.com for more info.

Woerners World
ONE GUYS TAKE: THE TOP TEN SPORTS MOVIES OF ALL-TIME
By Ryan Patrick Woerner

Weve all been there. You get

home from work on Monday,
still zonked from the weekend,
and hit the Guide button on
the remote control. Scrolling
through the plethora of subscription channels on your TV
package, you see it. Some obscure channel, maybe its IFC
or FX, is airing your favorite
sports movie of all time. And
there goes your next two-anda-half hours.
You know every scene heck,
you got almost every line down
memorized. The climactic sequence begins, one you have
seen an incalculable number
of times, yet somehow there
seems to be a lingering chance
that the storyline could mysteriously change. It doesnt, and
you spend the remainder of the
evening attempting to self-justify the hours of couch-bound
time that just transpired.
Since countdowns seem to
inundate my inbox with the
most reader e-mails, this week
we will tackle The Top Ten
Sports Movies of All-Time out
of the best three-point stance
we can muster. The criteria?
First and foremost, the box office doesnt matter. Kung Fu
Panda 3 took in over half-abillion dollars this year, which
should tell you all you need
to know about a films gross
being indicative of its quality. We also do not care about
star power in the cast. A sound
script, accurate depiction of
sport play, and aversion of as
much cheesiness as possible
scores a film the most points
here (no pun intended).
10. The Legend of Bagger
Vance
The Will Smith/Matt Damon
golf movie that nobody went to
see. To be clear, the film barely covered half of its budget,
which was driven largely by
the star-laden casts steep individual price tags. The plot
is loosely based on the Hindu Gita, a portion of a sacred
warrior text that covers the internal struggles of human life.

Damon portrays an alcoholic

veteran suffering from PTSD
who upon his return home
from World War I, is thrust into
an exhibition golf tournament
with real-life athletes Bobby
Jones and Walter Hagen. The
film serves best as a must-see
sports psychology lesson for
current athletes capable of out
of the box critical thinking.
9. Jerry Maguire
Where so many sports films
choose to examine an individuals achievement or the
team
dynamic,
Cameron
Crowes 1996 effort delves into
the oft-forgotten business of
sports, riddled with a Show
me the money! mantra and
sleazy personalities. Long
considered one of the most
surprising Oscar Best Picture snubs (lost to The English Patient, a film I am not
sure anyone in our readership
consumed), the acting truly carries the day, with Cuba
Gooding Jr. delivering an impassioned representation of a
mid-level professional football
player desperate for a contract.
8. Miracle
This one was lauded for its
realism, primarily because
they committed to making
actors out of hockey players,
as opposed to teaching established actors the difficult sport
of hockey. Kurt Russells fiery
locker room talk before the
iconic matchup with the Soviet hockey team unseats Gene
Hackmans Hoosiers oration as
the greatest sports movie pregame speech of all-time. Miracle covers all of the idiosyncratic bases necessary to illicit
emotion from viewers, from its
inclusion of Al Michaels to reprise his broadcasting role to
the portrayal of Herb Brooks
cathartic reaction to his teams
improbable victory.
7. Remember the Titans
The film struggles to hold up
its end of the bargain the football action scenes, but Denzel
Washingtons performance as
the Head Coach overcomes

any of those minor shortcomings. Race relations in the

South provide a backdrop for
this partially true story of one
of the first desegregated high
school football teams in the
state of Virginia. Like many of
the other films on this list, it
features an outstanding score
and soundtrack, merging 70s
Creedance Clearwater vibes
with Trevor Rabins orchestral
wizardry.
6. Breaking Away
Something about conflict between snobby rich college kids
and locals in Bloomington,
Indiana really gets me going.
Using the Indiana University
Little 500 cycling race (which
is an actual plot line) the film
garnered exponential returns
on its paltry $2.3-million-dollar budget. Watch it and at the
very least you may be motivated to venture to Hoosier-land
next spring to see this awesome college tradition play out
in person.
5. Hoop Dreams
Possibly the most iconic
sports documentary of alltime. Hoop Dreams covers
two distinct stories of Chicago-area high school basketball
players, unveiling along the
way the requisite ugliness that
pervades the business of youth
basketball. If documentaries
are your thing, five more sports
titles that are MUST SEE: Fantastic Lies (Duke Lacrosse
scandal), The Endless Summer (Surfing), Senna (Formula One racer Ayrton Senna),
Murderball (U.S. Wheelchair
Rugby team), Through the Fire
(Sebastian Telfairs Senior year
of high school).
4. Rudy
For whatever reason, most
critics who compile lists similar to this one never have Rudy
in the Top Ten. With all filming
done on Notre Dames campus
and some exceptional support
acting alongside Frodo, I see
few flaws in this one. Also, the
Prove what? speech the janitor gives the protagonist in the

bowels of the stadium near the

films conclusion is downright
heroic.
3. Moneyball
Another sports-biz film,
with aging heartthrob Brad
Pitt on-screen as Billy Beane,
the actual General Manager of
the Oakland Athletics. Beane
is known for influencing the
game of baseballs personnel
evaluation process by being
the first executive to effectively use sabermetrics. The films
centralization on true baseball
concepts legitimizes it over
fellow baseball-themed films
Major League and Bull Durham, which tended to err on
the side of comedy.
2. Hoosiers
Featuring a coach with a dark
past, a zany alcoholic team
aide, and some undersized
Caucasian players, this movie
could have been speculated to
have been based on a 1960s De
Sales Easter tournament underdog. The locker room slow
clap is still high on the queue
for video board montages at
professional sporting events.
Local CYO coaches have the
film to thank for the late-game
picket fence play that wins
Hickory an important regular
season contest.
1. Rocky
Yo Adrien, we did it. Although actor/director Sly
Stallone punted with cheesiness in the third, fifth, and
sixth installments, the first,
second, and fourth editions
of the Rocky series are sports
film deity. Movie-goers in the
70s were disappointed to find
out that the movie was not in
fact a documentary, but that
did not stop them from openly
cheering for Balboa in theatres
when he achieved a knockout.
The inspiration for the film was
Bayonnes Chuck Wepner, who
famously went the distance
with Muhammed Ali despite
being a glorified club fighter.

11:30 Field 1, Knights of
Columbus vs Moneyballs

Battle of the 3rd and 4th seed.

Moneybags still have a shot to
snag a first round bye but need
their offense to wake up after
only scoring 2 runs a piece in
their last 3 games. Knights have
split the last 2 weeks and can
use a sweep to lock up the 3rd
spot. PREDICTION: Split
11:30 Field 2, Chuggernauts
vs Misfits

By The Commissioner

It was a great weekend for

the J.B.S.L. starting off with
the All-Star Game on Saturday.
There was a great turnout with
over 100 people in attendance.
Thank you everyone who came
out to show support for the
league and those who helped
donate towards the BCVFD who
were serving up cold beverages
and food. The game itself was
a back and forth fight as Team
Orange edged out Team Green
9-7. Congrats to Moneyballs
John Galimi winning the Mike
Nolan Award (All-Star Game
MVP).
Sunday was another great day
as well as we had some good
games. The Mudsharks made
light work of the Orioles 13-1

and 9-0 and still never has lost

to the Orange and Black. Then
we had the Chuggernauts hold
on to their season, winning
10-8 over the Knights but then
dropped game two, 5-2.
In late game action we saw two
sweeps as Morning Wood won
twice by the mercy rule over the
Moneyballs winning 14-2 both
games. Next was the No-Shows.
After being down vs the Misfits in
both games, they battled back to
win 7-6 and 5-3. Also the Mudsharks beat the Chuggernauts
15-2 in a make-up from week 1.
Four teams have clinched
a spot in the post season and
one has been eliminated. That
leaves four teams left battling it
out for the last two spots. Heres
a look at Sundays action.

9:30 Field 1, Morning Wood

vs Mudsharks

This is probably a preview of

the 2016 Championship. Just a
matter of who will have home
field advantage in the final.
Winner of this matchup should
lock up 1st place with the losers
taking 2nd. PREDICTION: Split
9:30 Field 2, Orioles vs Old
Head

Orioles are officially out of the

playoff hunt. A 3rd place finish
last season to a last place finish
isn't what they envisioned. Still
4 games left to see if the Os can
put one in the win column. Old
Head is in a tight race for the
playoffs and need to win to hold
onto their season. PREDICTION: Old Head Sweep

The week off didn't help the

Misfits as their season continues
to go in the wrong direction after
a great start. Misfits holding on
to that 5th spot by a thread as the
Chuggernauts only sit a game
behind them. These next 2 weeks
are big for the Chugs as they hold
their own destiny. Win and your
in. PREDICTION: Split
BYE- No-Shows

After a 1-8 start the No-Shows

have won 4 out of their last 5
and only sit a game out of that
last spot in the playoffs.

SFDS Summer Classic: Playoffs Nearing

August is almost here, which
means the playoffs for the St.
Francis Summer Classic are just
around the corner. In fact, they
get off to a start tonight, with
the Graybeards Championships
at St. Camillus Springman Hall.
The Legends lead off at 7:00 followed by the Young Guns in the
main event. The Mens Open
League will complete its regular
season at the same time back at
Fr. Grogan Memorial School-

yard. Eight teams will qualify

for the quarterfinals on Thursday August 4. The Rock Park AllStars have already wrapped up
top seed.
The Womens Open League
finishes their regular season
play this Monday and Tuesday
at the St. Francis gym.
Playoffs for all others will be
later in August. While there are
no playoffs in the Boys and Girls
Grammar Junior divisions, Cur-

rans Superior Meats is currently tops in the boys while

McManus Mechanical and
Pro1tireservice.com are undefeated on the girls side. Surf &
Swirl Frozen Yogurt leads both
the Girls Grammar Senior and
Girls High School divisions.
Belle Harbor Chemists shares
the lead for High School.
A plethora of teams sit at 3-1
in Boys Grammar Middle play.
Greene Machine is the only un-

beaten team in Boys Grammar

Senior and the Grayriders hold
the same distinction in Boys
High School. While rain has
played havoc with the schedule, all games have been rescheduled so check with your
coach if you are not sure when
you are playing. The heat is
definitely on here in Rockaway,
and at the St. Francis Summer
Classic, so come on out to catch
the action.
