Religious Event Experience
In my cultural event experience I decided to attend another religious church other than
my own. I grew up in a Catholic home and my fiancs family is Christian I decided to tag along
with them to Church this past Sunday. I was a little nervous to approach his family about
attending for a school assignment without offending them but when I asked they said it was no
problem. I also felt a little brittle about attending another church beside my own it almost felt as
if I was betraying my religion.
Even though Catholics and Christianity are quite the same they are also very different. The
common practices come from Christianity but the most important common belief is that Christ
gave his life on the cross to save us from our sins. They both have different interpretations of
what the bible states.
In the Catholic religion we call going to church as going to Mass and in the Christian
church they call it Worshiping service. The Catholic mass usually last only an hour to an hour
and a half. We begin with a greeting where we all say a short prayer with the Priest who is also
known as the father he represents the people before God. He will then do the right of blessing
while sprinkling Holy Water. He will do a couple of scripture readings and gospels. Following is
the sig of peace that is where we wish one another for peace to be with one another. There is also

a bread breaking and a couple more gospel songs then dismissal. In the Catholic Church people
are more serious and quiet it is as if they were at a funeral.
While attending the Christian Worship service there was a complete different vibe and it
lasts up to four hours. I felt as if everyone was in such a good mood. I thought to myself Who is
happy to come to church, I never got that energy while attending mass. The Pastor the leader of
the church does a welcoming with a prayer. They sing gospel for about two hours, then the pastor
will preach for about two hours. I enjoyed the gospel it was really beautiful music and the
preaching was also different. Instead of reading directly from the bible they would translate the
bible to modern times so the people are able to understand the meaning of the words from God. I
did enjoy the service however I felt it was awfully long.
When I attended both mass and worship service they are usually are in Spanish, which
means mostly everyone is Hispanic. However there are people of other race who speak Spanish,
such as African Americans and even White people. In mass I there is so much people that you
have to basically fight for a seat. In the Catholics church they have a lot of saints and crosses
with jesus on them everywhere. In the worship service there was so much space everywhere.
They only have one cross and no saints. I approached one of my fiancs family members and
asked why they didnt have statues of saints. They advised me the reason being is because
although they do believe that saints do take place in the bible they believe they we only worship
on God and that the only person they should worship.
In conclusion, they both had different proxemics based on their beliefs ad religions they
were. I really enjoyed the different experience and it also helped me opened my mind more
religiously. The awesome part about this is that I will be baptizing my son in a few weeks, in to
my Catholic religion. Hopefully he learns to love and worship God as he grows older.
