ulture is huge in Croatia. I would stress huge

here, because Bulb magazine is by and large created in my attic, which is culture embodied. Apart
from the fact that church bells wake me up each
morning at six, I have a few, to put it mildly, weird
persons living as my neighbours, the existence of
whom worries me a little. A shabby heavy metal fan
who plays the guitar on his amplifier all day long, a
retiree with high IQ who starts mowing every Saturday quite early, and disturbed brothers whose fights
are interrupted only by the police and ambulance after midnight. One has to admit this is no ideal backdrop for the creation of a magazine. However, this is
where we currently are. The cafe which blasted what
they call folk, not allowing me more than 5 minutes
on my terrace, has recently been shut.

ders decided Bulb will no longer be a monthly. But

do not think we have gone depressive or that we are
quitting, for we have achieved far more than we had
dared hope when the project started. We proved
we know how and that we can, but I am also saying
loud and clear we have no support, the support Ivo
Pervan speaks of in one of our interviews when he
says:

Having bragged about my neighbourhood, it is

only fitting I also say something on the wider context in which the magazine is created.

However, if one does not get enough support

home, this does not entail one is not good enough. Bulb magazine has been shortlisted by the renowned Smashing magazine among 40 best online
photo magazines worldwide. Is this big? You tell me,
for I know not of any Croatian magazine being read
in 160 world countries.

Despite the alleged crisis and the lack of workplaces, everyone is quite busy in Croatia in case you do
try to collect some quality material that would be published in our magazine. You should, therefore, not
worry yourself with possible cooperation in 80% of
the cases. Distributors marketing thinking is mostly
medieval (there are exceptions!) even though they
try to persuade you they are selling equipment which came right from the future. Sponsors you can get
provided there are more adverts in the magazine
which have nothing to do with photography than
actual photographs.
All in all, these are but a few reasons why the foun-

I hold the essence lies in the capability of the Croatian citizen to create, and that we should all here
turn to ourselves and our values and stop constantly
glorify the foreign to start appreciate the indigenous more regardless of whether this is the country,
nature or people, abilities, capabilities or knowledge.

But, new Bulb being out now, it is vacation and

fun time, which is something we can thank the organisers of Photodays, being held on 5 and 6 June,
who secured accommodation and great fun full of
exceptional photo events to Bulb founders, as their media promoters. Thanks. And once we are back,
fun again :) - the huge party on 19 June in Medika,
accompanied by a show by hi-fju from Zagreb, on
account of our Photoshock exhibition on lomography. Everybody is invited

INTERVIEW

http://www.ivopervan.hr/

Ivo Pervan
What is the thing about photography that delights you the most? Which
moment in your career would you pick out as particularly remarkable?
The thing I love about photography most is immediate contact with nature that created all this beauty around us and offered it for our delight. The challenge is to find
and record this beauty and to be able to present it to other people. In photography the
most extraordinary moments are the ones when I feel closer to God in some way. Also,
it is very special for me how I feel when I get in touch with extremely rich heritage of my
nation and it is a great honour that my work allowed me to do that.

y advice to young photographers is to invest a superhuman effort and love in photography and to
conquer their vanity in the name of good photographs
and creation.

BULB MAGAZINE 14

INTERVIEW

e was born in Split on 24 July. Having finished high school, he started studying
law, but dropped out two years afterwards, realizing law is not even akin to his
creative nature, him noticing all the beauty around us, beauty that was visible and
hidden, from the early years of his life.
He next started studying at the High Economics School in Split, which he graduated
from, specialising in foreign trade. He began flirting with photography in high school
- having modest high school conditions that didnt disturb his creativity.
His photographs are used by many tourist publication publishers/guides, posters,
postcards and tourist magazines. As an author, as well as a co-author, he participated
in making various monographs, especially in the field of cultural heritage photography. This is not without a reason, for cultural and natural heritage are his primary interest in photography, along his wish to preserve our history using images. Time, often
our negligence, and lack of funds cause these values to disappearHe received many
prestigious international awards for his work on natural and cultural heritage of Croatia (Prague, Copenhagen, and Karlovy Vary).
In 1990, he started working independently, during the war which we unfortunately
all had to go through, and soon brought in the first International award for Croatia
the first award of the world competition for tourist posters 1992 in Vienna. Ho shot a
poster of Split.
From 1980 untill today, Ivo Pervan has been author of seventeen photo monographs, and he co-authored more than 60 of them. He had numerous exhibitions, especially him working for the promotion of Croatian tourism (brochures, leaflets, CDs...). His

posters brought Croatia 7 first awards in different world competitions.

From 1995 untill today, around 3,000 motifs of his work ended up on postcards representing Croatia.
Recently, he has been working for Croatia Airlines INFLIGHT magazine, showing cultural and natural heritage of the Croatian coast in his stories in a distinctive way. He
is publishing on a regular basis in magazines CICERO, VOX, JET SET and he is also the
author of photography in Northern Adriatic LIVING ARHIPELAGO issued by Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia from Split.
For a few years now, ADRIATIC CROATIA INTERNATIONAL CLUB use his photographs
for their catalogue exclusively.
His photography is represented in ARS SHALIEUTICAs social project termed GAJETA
FALKUSA and cooperation with Dr Joko Boani resulted in lectures. He also organized a projection of slides of cultural and natural heritage withpoetry readings of our
eminent lyricists, Gordana Beni and Luko Paljetak, in several Croatian cities. During
the past 12 years of work, he received around 15 awards for numerous calendars that
were printed using his motifs.
He owns a slide library with over 200,000 slides.
During the last three years his photographs were printed in magazines such as Michelin - Editions des voyages / France/, Courrier Cadres /France/, Brandt Travel Guides
Ltd / England/, Meridiani /Italy/, White Star Publisher / Italy/, Ulysse / France/, Krakow
Partner / Germany / A - ja Corporation / Tokyo/.

BULB MAGAZINE 14

INTERVIEW

How much are your success and recognition due to talent and how much
to the beauty of Croatia, available to every photographer?
I think photography is a natural born capability related solely to the intellect and
that a photograph occurs in the photographers mind first and he then records it with
his camera.

As an experienced photographer, what have you invested most of your

time and energy in lately, producing quality results?
During my whole life I invested most of my energy into a fair relationship with nature, people around me and myself and I think this is a good way to be successful in
every aspect of life and photography.

Bulb Magazine, in the course of its work, deliberately leaves out information about exposure time, camera and lens. This is a feature of ours as a
magazine, because we hold the author important, not the means. What do
you think about this? What is your message to photographers that emphasise the technical over the human aspect?
I think that the technical aspect is completely irrelevant compared to the human
one. As I already pointed out, the photograph is a reflection of photographers intellect and his ability to see and create something he/she wants other people to see.
Equipment is merely an instrument to get what he already created in his head.

BULB MAGAZINE 14

INTERVIEW

When someone is successful doing something, usually his milieu and the
public impose responsibilities towards younger generations, in order to
make them more successful. Do you carry such a burden and how do you
deal with it, that is, do you act in a certain way to facilitate the work of
young promising photographers?
Ive always tried to show that the important thing is to evolve as a human being
and that everything is in our hands and our head. A complete person is more likely to
become an excellent photographer.

What is your attitude towards the fact that there are many young talented photographers that have no place to exhibit their work. For example,
there is no real photo gallery in Zagreb. What is your advice for them?
I think that the closing of Gallery Badrov for example is a major tragedy for our country and a reflection of our ignorance. My advice to young photographers is to invest a
superhuman effort and love in photography and to conquer their vanity in the name
of good photographs and creation.

Tell us about the exhibition that will take place in Mimara in Zagreb and
how did you come to the idea of a joined exhibition considering this does
not occur so often in our country?
I embraced the idea about a joined exhibition to show that the status of Marko Vrdoljak, who is at the beginning of his photographic career, and Ivo Pervan, who has been
photographing his entire life, is not important. I think the important thing is the ability
of Croatians to create and that all the people in Croatia should turn to their strengths
and values and stop constantly worshipping what is foreign and begin to appreciate
our country, nature and people, as well as skills, possibilities and knowledge.

Marko Vrdoljak

successful photograph for me is a photograph that

makes you look into yourself and makes you stop
for a moment and abandon yourself to the feeling.

BULB MAGAZINE 14

INTERVIEW

What does photography mean to you today in this crazy urban rhythm
when everyone is worrying about the future?
Many people will say that art is in a certain way an escape from reality. I say that
photography is an escape to reality, that it is in a certain way returning to what is essential and what matters to us - the beauty of nature. Every time Im taking pictures,
especially when it happens very early in the morning, Id love to be able to share this
beauty and magic of nature with the whole world. I wish that nature and the sense of
everything around us for people can become again the source of life and not just an
occasional moment of relaxation.

What, in your opinion, is a successful photograph?

A succeessful photograph for me is a photograph that makes you look into yourself
and makes you stop for a moment and abandon yourself to the feeling. People dont
get enough in touch with themselves and the others today.

BULB MAGAZINE 14

INTERVIEW

Do you think that a photographer should be original in his approach to

photography or is it enough that the motif is original?
I think that we should have more imagination in photography as well as in life. Imagination is what makes the world go round and where we all have come from. Had
not your father imagined tenderness to your mother or hadnt she wished love and a
happy life, you wouldnt be here today. Same thing for me and the world around us.

Big media industry today needs photography. Magazines, advertisements, campaigns, fashion. Do you find this tempting or do you prefer
more intimate photography intended for a smaller circle of friends and
viewers?
Speaking of photographs on this exhibition, it doesnt matter to me how the message will spread. It is important that the message of positive energy is sent and that
someone gets it, reads it and passes it further. Its sad when a photograph is used
for wrong purposes, for example the attempt to increase the sales of a magazine by
showing a picture of a dead Iranian child in his mothers hands.

BULB MAGAZINE 14

INTERVIEW

What is the thing in your opinion that Croatian photography scene lacks?
We have everything we need to buy for photographing but what then?
What is necessary to keep the scene alive, influential, interesting and finally go outside Croatian borders?
I really think, as Mr. Pervan already said, that the closing of the Badrov Gallery in Zagreb is a step back in the growth of the Croatian photography scene. There are many
talented young people and they need new clubs and galleries to show their work.
Luckily, on the other hand, the internet comunity is evolving very fast and in every
direction; the photography one as well.

What are your plans and ambitions for the future? Are there any plans or
will you just let yourself go to where the situation takes you?
My goal is to take many pictures and spend as much time as I can surrounded by
nature. I hope to be able to record as many magic moments and fantastic worlds as I
can this way.

Exhibition Pervan &Vrdoljak

How did you come up with the title for this exhibition and how did you
select the pictures to show? It was probably hard to make a selection
among so many taken pictures.
People have healthy eyes but they are blind. There are so many colours and light
all around but unfortunately because of the speed and rhythm of life many people
are not capable of noticing this play of colours and light. This is why we tried to show
at least a part of all this, from simple daily moments to very rare and really magic
ones of the world we live in. The selection was actually very easy to do. We took one
part of our work and chose the ones that we thought fit into the title and the idea we
had about this exhibition.

Are the exhibited pictures all new pictures or are there older ones there
too?
Most of them are new pictures, taken during the last few years.

Will this exhibition take place in Mimara only or somewhere else afterwards as well?
The exhibition will take place in HNK (Croatian National Theatre) in Varazdin, in
Trakoscan Castle and Mimara Museum, but the exhibition is ready to be shown in
every place that satisfies the technical conditions to set up 40 photographs, dimensions 70x100 with quality light and other conditions. At present we are negotiating
with the National museum in Bratislava and some other institutions in Croatia and
Europe and we believe that this exhibition will be requested and shown in many
more places.

What else would you like to say to our readers in Croatia and the world?
Were inviting all readers of your magazine to come to our exhibition and to exchange ideas and experience that we believe to be very similar for every person that
loves photography. Our message to all the people who love photography is to work
on themselves, follow their imagination and all the creative energy that they own.

A photograph is never neutral. Each photograph embodies a way of seeing and showing
the world. Even if it records a scene accurately.
Why this scene? Why present it straight instead of obviously inflected?
BULB MAGAZINE 14

PROJECT

All images presented in this ongoing project

convey my vision through a technique called
tilt. Recognized parts along with blured ones
would be assoiciations. Fragments of memories, feel of the past, nostalgia or slight melancholia, solitude, simplicity, symbolic presentation of thouhgts and emotional reflection
of places - the scenes which de facto deliver
such a feelings to me.

Soul tales
Let me introduce you to a very special project. Its about some extraordinary
women who speak of their souls using the camera. Thanks to photography we
nowadays have the opportunity to use great instruments able to capture our
secrets and peculiarities. For this reason people use their cameras more and
more often just like poets used pens in the past.
This is a story of dreams coming to life. This is our story, a dance of souls.

Alyz Tale
http://www.visualyz.com
Before developing a deep passion for photography, Alyz had been a journalist
for 8 years with a particular preference for culture and music. During those years,
she had also been modelling for several artists. Thanks to both activities she met
a lot of brilliant photographers and fell in love with the art of taking pictures
and the idea to create universe through photography. It was quite obvious that,
sooner or later, she had to take the camera in her hands and this is what she did
in 2007.
Alyz now creates her own visions trying to set them somewhere between reality and dream.

Sara Gaudenzi
http://www.pirifool.com
Sara Gaudenzi was born in Assisi 28 years ago. She is currently attending University although she actively works as web designer freelancer and collaborates
with his partner who is a painter as well.
She does not define herself a photographer but a picture maker.
Sara mainly blends portraits with forms of conceptualism using herself as a
model, being able to express her best the meaning of her pictures this way.
She really loves to create pictures which correspond to a very personal idea of
Perfection and Harmony. For this reason she started doing private works some
six years ago. At first, photography was used to cover lack of her drawing skills
but in time she discovered a new world made of infinite opportunities which
allowed her to create and capture emotions and now she definitely considers
the art of taking pictures a special art. Photography allowed her to find the right
words to express the part of herself which has no voice because images always
tell something more, something which strikes deeply.
These fix dreams, emotions, and embody imaginary characters, all in single
shots. Sara is totally autodidact.

Although the authors and their photographs are entirely different, some are young, some are old, from the West

The exhibition organised within the photographic festival Photodays will contain about 30 photographs of the
following authors: AUGUST BRADLE, BARRY RYAN, CARL

first ever made Hasselblad camera, models that were used
in space, the golden models, the latest H3DII digital camera 50 MP and a photograph of mister Victor Hasselblad.

Some older models of the Hasselblad camera that are in a

private collection will also be displayed.
Prominent foreign photographic experts will review
portfolios
On the first day of the final manifestation an important lecture for photographers on Colour Management
will take place and it will be held by Dean vorc who is
engaged in the systems of colour management from the
very beginning, and a workshop that will be led by the
famous photographer Mare Milin. The workshop is directed towards the participants who are interested in fashion
photography and according to the idea of the multi-talented artist and creative artistic director of this workshop
Mare Milin, the interpretation is specific because it refers
to a low-tech approach to modern technology that leads
to technically and aesthetically interesting results. Usually
such modern photographs can be seen in magazines like
the ID or we can notice them in the work of photographers
who have made this style famous: Juergen Teller, Terry Richardson, Bettina Rheims, Corinne Day, etc....

On the same day, the Croatian photographers will have

an opportunity to present their portfolios to photographic
experts like Natalija Bajric, the owner of an international
photographic agency with headquarters in Switzerland,
Enrico Bossan the artistic director of the Italian magazine
Colors, Reiner Opoku, the world famous curator and publishing editor of the house Tashen and many others.
The final ceremony of the festival with attractive foreign guests
Judging by last year`s interest and this year`s arrival
announcements, there will be many visitors. For them, a
special photo-route has been planned on which they will
be able to develop their photographs free of charge and
there will also be a mini-contest for the best photographs
that were taken that day in Rovinj. The photo-route will
open on June 6, 2009 when the greatest number of visitors is expected.
That same day the world famous photographer and

Teese, Eastwood, Dolly Parton, Winone Ryder, Pamela Anderson, Beyonce Knowles, Nikki and Paris Hilton, 50 Cents,
Ashlee Simpson, P. Diddy, Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and

After the lecture a round table is planned on the topic

reaction that ultimately brought about exceptional, universal creations. They are Igor Sambolec with the photograph Daily life, Nenad Reberak with Colours and Paun
Paunovi Croatia the Netherlands.
A great choice of good photographs that were sent to
the Competition for the category Free topic meant a great challenge and a lot of work, but it was almost unnecessary to double-check the works, because all the three finalists Ana Lorencin, Davor ari and Petar Trinajsti already
in the first round imposed their works with almost remarkable particularities of their photographs.
In the category Advertising the final decision was
made by the world famous photographer Michael Miller.
He declared two photographs created by Dago ole Ori
and one photograph by Sandra Vitalji as the best.
The same photographer also made the final decision in
the category Generated photography and he gave credit
to the finalists by announcing that their works remind him
of the photographic master Joel Peter Witkin. Aleksandar
Nedi with the photograph Sofa, Branko Jurii with his
Victims of love, Foto video klub with 35mm and the

Cross together with the photograph Cow entered the

final round.
A large number of photographs entered for the categories Nature and Architecture presented many problems
for the Jury. However, after long deliberations finalists
were selected and only one in each category will win the
official award A Shot . In the category of Architecture
these are Aleksandar Nedi with the photograph Wildride, Damir Matijevi with the photograph Window and
Mario Romuli and Draen Stoji with their work The
Hangar of Death.
Enrico Bossan, the distinguished member of the Jury
from Italy, also the editor of magazine Colors, for category Nature was especially delighted with the works of
the following finalists: Maja Strahija, Mario ebetovsky
and Vedran Marketi: it turned out that ...
Rainer Opoku, an international curator had a difficult
task to judge from the selection of the best portfolios and
he made the final decision in the category Erotic photography. For this category he selected the works of Damir
Bortek, Sebastijan Vojvoda and Kreimir Mitrovi.
For the flattering title of the best photographer of the

year, the following photographers are nominated thanks

to the best placing in the category: Baljkas Luka, Petra Poani and Thea Akeli.

Davor Jurii is a freelance translator/interpreter based in Zagreb, Croatia. He is a professional and opts
for the hit and run tactics business-wise, but a character or two related to his vocation do occasionally
slip in his life, and unfortunately out of as well. Funny thing is he actually has something to say, and therefore writes, mostly short poetry and prose pieces. He is also a postgrad student something he is bad at:
even though his passed exams betray straight As, someone once remarked all exams were silly passed
the age of 24. Most recently, he exhibits amateur liking for graphic design, doing his own annual versions
of basic html code, out of reasons philosophical: he claims ideas will take you only that far.

GLOBULB

From a digital magazine to digital media

GloBULB is a monthly recognition to the best web
pages in the domain of photography.
Galleries, photography
blogs and personal web
pages of successful photographers are often works
of art on their own merit
but, sadly, often unnoticed
by the general public. The
GloBULB Award aims to
spread the awareness of
the importance of interactive and modern Internet
promotion of the art of
photography, which is unjustly ignored by many excellent photographers.

GloBULB
Best Photography
Web Site Award

Aware of the fact that

an excellent photographer
might not be an excellent web designer, we will
base the GloBULB Award
primarily on the criteria
of the quality of exhibited
photography on the web
site. Of course, an advantage will be given to those
web sites that add to the
authors originality with an
equally original web presentation,
implemented
technical solutions and
quality of web design.

hen he was seven years old, he turned into a dinosaur and bit his best friends leg. That, at
least, was the theme of his first motion picture, which he recorded with his grandfathers Hi8
camera when he was in an age when most of his school friends probably had trouble learning how
to read. Joey Lawrence was always, it seems, an advanced young man, who eventually grew into a
visual artist with an amazing skill set. Without any expert education in the field of photography, and
after just turning 19, Joey boasts with a client list signed by Warner Brothers Records, Summit Entertainment, NBC, Channel 4, Kawasaki, Atlantic Records, Forbes, SciFi Channel and others. And theres
a reason for this.

f you are aware of an innovative, imaginative

and original Web site of a
good photographer, please dont hesitate to
send us your suggestions! Simply send us
the link, followed with a short explanation
of your proposal, to globulb@bulb-magazine.
com. Our staff will take note of your suggestions and add them to our ever growing
lists of web pages that qualify for the GloBULB plaque!

His online portfolio is designed in a minimalist way convenient for the photographic community,
but it stands out with its well thought through Flash programming that dynamically resizes the entire
web site in relation to the size of the web browser window. This, in turn, ensures that browsing experience will be pleasant regardless of the end users screen resolution. And if you have a really big resolution, the photographs shown will be huge and detailed, turning browsing into a very rewarding
experience. The navigation is performed via several links that categorize the portfolio, with a sliding
thumbnail ticker below the currently shown photograph. The ticker moves to the left or right in relation to the position of the mouse cursor, thus minimizing the need for clicking through. And thats
pretty much it as far as navigation is concerned. More or less than that can hardly be asked for.
Besides photography, Joey uses his website to promote several music videos he produced, and the
interest of the visitor is further increased by the existence of a photo blog (now already a usual tool
in many a photographers online portfolio). The blog is rich in multimedia, with many posts containing videos of Joeys photo assignments, behind-the-scene glimpses of some of the stories behind his
photographs or even tricks on how he achieved a certain effect.
The thing that fascinates us most is the fact that the author of this multimedia treasury is only nineteen years old. And everything he does he does himself. From the amazing quality of the original
photography to the masterful photo manipulation skills (and you can buy those skills by purchasing
his interactive tutorial on-line), Joey is self-taught and self-trained to an astonishing level. On top of
all that - if one should believe the statements in his FAQ - he can even lick his own elbow. In two different ways. If this isnt enough for a GloBULB award, we dont know what is.
