buryingoftelevisionantennacables,telephonecables,watersupplypipes,and

oftherequireddepth,insteadofcausingamuchgreateramountofdestructionof

areas,arenotwelladaptedfortheuseoflargepowertools.
Conventionalditchingmachinesusewheelscarryingshovels,andarealso
excessivelylargeformanyjobs.Itisknowntouseasmall,lightweightgasoline
engine,however,todrivesmalltrenchingtoolsincludingendlesschainscarrying
teethdesignedtodiganarrowslittrenchforuseinsituationssuchasthose
mentionedabove.

andeachhavingacutterbaseportionorientedparallelwithsaidchainplane

SUMMARYOFTHEINVENTION
Thepresentinventionprovidesanendlessloopoftrenchdiggingchainwhichis
compatiblewiththenormaldrivesprocket,clutch,andsawbarofaconventional
chainsaw.Forexample,atrencherchaincomprisescentrallylocatedsingleplate
saidchainplaneandacarrierbladeextendingawayfromsaidchainplane
generallyperpendiculartosaidcarrierbaseportion,saidcarrierbaseportion
definingacarrierheightwhichislessthansaidcutterheightandsaidcarrier
bladedefiningacarrierwidth,saidcarrierwidthbeinggreaterthansaid
carrierheight,andallofsaidcarriersbeinglocatedononesideofsaidchain
planeand
(d)saidcarrierwidthbeingatleastequaltosaidcutterheight.
4.Anendlesstrenchingchainforuseincombinationwithachainsawincludinga
drivesprocketandagenerallyplanarguidebarincludinganoutwardlyopen
peripheralchainguidechannel,thechaincomprising:
linksincludingsprocketengagingrootswhichslideintheperipheralchainguide
(a)apluralityoflinkspivotablyinterconnectedwithoneanotherinan
grooveprovidedalongtheedgesofachainsawguidebar.Thesingleplatelinks
endlessloopdefiningachainplaneinwhichallofsaidlinksarelocated
areconnectedbydoubleplatelinksinwhichparallelpairsofplatesareriveted
together,withtherivetsextendingpivotablythroughholesintheendsofthe
singleplatelinkswhichthedoubleplatelinksconnect.
(b)apluralityofcutters,eachassociatedwithoneofsaidpluralityoflinks
andeachhavingacutterbaseportionorientedparallelwithsaidchainplane
andacutterlateralportionextendingawayfromsaidchainplanegenerally

andeachofsaidcarriershavingacarrierbaseportionorientedparallelwith
saidchainplaneandacarrierbladeextendingawayfromsaidchainplane
generallyperpendiculartosaidcarrierbaseportion,saidcarrierbaseportion

distancegreaterthanthewidthofthecutter.Thecarrierwidthmaybe,for

Itisthereforeaprincipalobjectofthepresentinventiontoprovideanimprovedcombinationofcuttersandcarriersforuseon
anendlesschainfordiggingtrenches.
Itisanotherimportantobjectofthepresentinventiontoprovideachainwhichcanbeusedfordiggingatrenchandwhich
canbedrivenbyachainsawengineinthesamewayinwhichanordinarysawchainisused.
Itisanimportantfeatureofthepresentinventionthatitprovidesatrencherchainhavingcutterswhichextendtoagreater
heightabovethechainthandothecarrierswhichremoveearthfromatrenchafterithasbeenloosenedbythecutters.
Itisanotherimportantfeatureoftheinventionthatitprovidescarriersincludinglaterallyextendingportionswhichare
operativelyorientedgenerallyhorizontallytocarryloosenedsoilduringuseofthetrencherchain.
Itisanimportantadvantageofthetrencherchainofthepresentinventionthatitissignificantlycheapertomanufacturethan
previouslyavailabletrencherchains.
Itisanotherimportantadvantageofthepresentinventionthatitprovidesatrencherchainwhichcanreliablydigtrenches
whicharelargeenoughforinstallationofwaterpipes,cables,andthelike,whilecausingonlyaminimumamountofdamage
tolandscapedareas.
Theforegoingandotherobjects,featuresandadvantagesofthepresentinventionwillbemorereadilyunderstoodupon
considerationofthefollowingdetaileddescriptionoftheinventiontakeninconjunctionwiththeaccompanyingdrawings.

theouterlateralclearance32.Insomecases,itmayevenbenecessarytocutawayaportionoftheshield16,leavingonly
theportionoftheshield16whichisinsidethepathoftravelofthecarriers64,whichmaythenextendlaterallyoutwardfrom
thesawbar14toadistancegreaterthanthatwhichwasoriginallyprovidedwithintheouterlateralclearance32ofthat
particulartypeofshield16.

havingbeendonetothecarriers60.Preferably,boththecutters46andthecarriers60areofsheetsteelofathicknessof,
forexample,about0.05inch,temperedtopermitthecutters46andcarriers60tobendacertainamountwithoutbreaking
andtoberestoredtotheirproperconfiguration,alsowithoutbreaking.Forexamplea1050carbonsteel,heattreatedtoa

AswillbeappreciatedfromFIG.1,thecarrierblades64andcutterlateralportions54extendsubstantiallyhorizontallyduring
useofthetrencherchaininadownwardlydirectedattitudeofthesawbar14,inwhichtheplaneofthesawbar14is
generallyverticalandalongitudinalaxis78ofthesawbar14isataconvenientdownwardangle80.
Asatrenchisdugbyuseofthetrencherchain10onachainsawdrive12,thesoilisfirstloosenedbythecutters46and
thetrenchcreatedtherebyisincreasedbythewidth76ofthecarriers60,whichthenlifttheloosenedsoilonthegenerally
horizontallyextendingsurfacesofthecarrierblades64.
Preferably,hardsoilissoftenedbysoakingbeforethetrencherchain10isused,andthechain10islubricatedfrequently
andliberallyduringusetominimizewear.Damagetothechain10isbestavoidedbyproceedingslowlyandcarefully,
runningthechainsawdrive12atalowenginespeed.Whenthecutters46encounterahardobjectthechain10shouldbe
stoppedandtheobjectremoved,usingaseparatetool,beforeproceedingfurther.
Thetermsandexpressionswhichhavebeenemployedintheforegoingspecificationareusedthereinastermsof
descriptionandnotoflimitation,andthereisnointention,intheuseofsuchtermsandexpressions,ofexcluding
equivalentsofthefeaturesshownanddescribedorportionsthereof,itbeingrecognizedthatthescopeoftheinventionis
