THE ROLE OF TOURISM IN SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC

DEVELOPMENT-Salvo Creaco . University of Catania (Italy)
Tourism one of the fastest growing economic sectors is an important instrument
for development with all the economic activities. Unplanned and uncontrolled economic
growth can result in deterioration that can never be compromised. This article speaks about
the interconnected aspects of sustainable tourism, opinions on relationship between tourism
and environmental strategies. The [BRUTLAND REPORT] defined sustainable development
as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs.[WORLD COMMISSION ON
ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT, 1987]
However the writer could have also included the risks and concerns that are
related to tourism and an agenda towards sustainable tourism.

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM- CONTRIBUTION TO ECONOMIC GROWTH AND
SUSTAINABLE TOURISM.[UNCTAD]
Most of the countries that survive on tourism are finding ways to minimise the impact
created by tourism towards the environment. Sustainable Tourism is still considered as a
challenge that requires utmost attention. Another striking feature of the tourism sector is that
women contribute towards majority of the tourism workforce [6 Bolwell D and Weinz W
(2008).] This is the only sector that can stimulate all the economic activities through the
various linkages and thereby create a multiplier effect.[ 8 Geloso Grosso M, Lesher M and
Pinali 2007]
Sustainable tourism can be done by optimum utilisation of resources without over
utilisation thereby making an ecological balance. Destination Management Organisation
[DMO] should be well planned in such a way that it complements another destination.
However due to the recent terrorist attack in most of the touristic places has drastically
reduced the tourist arrivals to the destination. Some places also due to cultural destruction
caused by tourism have implemented a lot of entry restrictions. Example- GALAPAGOS
ISLANDS
