Aliwagwag Falls Eco Park

Name: Aliwagwag Falls Eco Park

Location: Compostela - Cateel Rd, Cateel, Davao Oriental
How to get there: First, you have to get a flight to Davao City. there are several airlines
servicing the route such as Philippine Airlines (PAL) or Cebu Pac (Cebu Pacific), cheapest flight
is through Cebu Pacific or if the other airlines offer their promo fare. Travel time is 1 hour and
45 minutes. Fare ranges from PhP5.000.00 to PhP8,000.00 (all-in). It is better to book 6 months
in advance to get the lowest possible rate.
There are other airports in Mindanao aside from Davao such as General Santos, Cotabato
City, Surigao City, Cagayan De Oro and Butuan. But if you choose any of these airports, you
have to labor the long road travel to Cateel. And so the best choice/option is to have the Davao
flight and it is the only international airport in Mindanao. Davao offers several flights (8-10/day)
from Manila. The other airports only offer 2-3 flights a day or sometimes none.
Second step, from Davao airport go the Ecoland Bus Terminal or the Gaisano Mall Terminal and
take the bus either via Mati or Compostela Valley. Several bus lines service the route such as
Mallen Express, Lyra Express, and Bachelor Express.
Davao via Mati using the bus is 10-12 hours using the Bachelor Bus and the fare is
PhP500.00 (325 kilometers). Davao via Compostela Valley (ComVal) using the Mallen bus is 6-7
hours or 170 kilometers. The Compostela Valley route is shorter but during rainy season it is not
advisable to use this route because of landlsides along the ComVal.
From Agusan to Surigao via Cuevas it is 250 kilometers. Upon reaching the town of
Cateel, the next step is to hire the best ride in town and that is using the habal-habal. The town
also offers private vehicles in case you are traveling as a group. Barangay Aliwagwag is more or
less 25 minutes from the town. Habal Habal rent is PhP300 (one-way) or PhP500 (round trip).
From Papag Bridge to Aliwagwag Falls it is 24 kilometers and from the town it is 28 kilometers.
From the town, travel time using the habal-habal is 25-30 minutes.
Special features: The Aliwagwag Falls is a series of more than 130 cascading waterfalls located
in Barangay Aliwagwag, about 30 minutes drive from the towns Poblacion. Its a unique
waterfalls dotting with different rock formations, shapes and various heights. Each tier differs
from another. It ranges from 6 to 110 feet. There is one measured at 72 feet and another is at 67.
Overall, Aliwagwag Falls is 1,110 feet of cascading energy and 20 meters in width. Viewing it
from afar, Aliwagwag Falls looks like a stairway to heaven. Not known to many, Aliwagwag
Falls is considered by hydraulic engineers as the highest waterfalls in the Philippines and
regarded as one of the most beautiful falls in the Philippines.

Folklore has it that the Waterfalls is a gift by the gods to the Mandaya Tribe of Cateel. It
is their source of living and fountain of their lives. Back in the old days, getting there was way
way hard compared these days. No roads, no trails. Riding a boat passing the scenic Cateel River
was the only way to get there.
Many years had passed, a dream of connecting Cateel to the Compostela Valley was
realized. The construction of Cateel-Compostela Road that connects Cateel to Davao City via
ComVal in just 5 hours paved way to the accessibility to see Aliwagwag Falls up close and
personal. This also gave birth to boost the local tourism in town. A magnificent work of nature.
Truly, a gift from Above! The creation of the new and partly cemented roads going to Barangay
Aliwagwag conveniently makes the visit very easy. Getting to the first tier of Aliwagwag Falls is
within very reach. Part of the national road, at the foot of the falls there is a concrete bridge so
perfect to get the panoramic view of the cascading Aliwagwag. From there, Aliwagwag Falls
appears like a stairway to heaven. Today, with just about 30 minutes drive from the Poblacion,
one can already experience the charms of Aliwagwag Falls. The cascading waters are just
awesome! Rock formations are astonishing. The whole place is surrounded by century old trees
and verdant forest. Endangered tropical forest flowers are all over. Aliwagwag Falls is also the
home of an infamous fish my we all considered our pride and favorite. We call it Sawugnun. It is
bitterly tasty. Best served as paksiw. Old folks say this fish can only be found in the waters of
Aliwagwag. In addition to its grandeur, Alwagwag Falls serves also as one of the main sources of
the clean and green Cateel River. Cateel River is one of the recipient of the Cleanest River
Awards in Region XI. The majestic beauty of the Aliwagwag Falls is indeed pride of every
Cateeleos. Its grandeur is like no other. Incomparable.
Amenities offered:
1.) The 45-meter Monkey Bridge which crosses the Aliwagwag Falls can do so at leisure
for only 50 pesos per head.
2.) The zip line to be a better option for its 680-meter glide across the Cateel River at a
fee of 200 pesos per head.
Those who prefer both experiences, however, need not avail of both rides separately
when they can just buy both in one go with a discount, totaling only 225 pesos. Now thats 25
pesos cheaper.
