Chapter I

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Intoduction
Community is a social unit of any size that shares common values, or that is situated in a
given geographical area (e.g. a village or town). It is a group of people who are connected
by durable relations that extend beyond immediate genealogical ties, and who usually
define that relationship as important to their social identity and practice. Although
communities are usually small, "community" may also refer to large groups, such
as national communities, international communities, and virtual communities.
Community space are public locations where members of a community tend to gather for
group activities, social support, public information, and other purposes. They may
sometimes be open for the whole community or for a specialised group within the
greater community.
As the place for all-community celebrations at various occasions and traditions, public
meetings of the citizens on various issues, where politicians or other official leaders come
to meet the citizens and ask for their opinions, support or votes ("election campaigning"
in democracies, other kinds of requests in non-democracies), where community members
meet each other socially, a place housing local clubs and volunteer activities, place that
community members (and sometimes others), can rent cheaply when a private family
function or party is too big for their own home. For instance the non-church parts of
weddings, funerals etc., place that passes on and retells local history, place where local
non-government activities are organized. Many of the community centers across the UK

CHAPTER II
Review of Related Literature
Literature Review It is quite a common sight to see community centers in use in various
parts of the world. They have been fulfilling a variety of roles in many communities for a
number of years. According to Xu, Gao, and Yan (2005), Community services are
widely accepted as effective solutions to social and economic problems. Furthermore, the
community center has become the backbone of service delivery in the community. This
is also illustrated by the amount of literature on how to build communities and the
programs which are found within these centers. Xu, Gao and Yan (2005) do not give
specifics as to how the building itself provides this backbone. The actual physical
structure and the features that are found inside play a large part and must be explored.
This seems to be a relatively new angle to view community centers and the way the work
takes place within. In this regard little research accounts for the features of a building and
the impact it has on the programs/activities for the community. Some might argue,
particularly in a time of economic stress, that the design of a building and its interior is
not as important. What is more important would be the programs and action happening
within the building. There almost seems to be an attitude of, Get by with what you have
and just be grateful for anything. Although this attitude is needed at times and seems like
the only option for struggling rural communities, it can be quite detrimental. It can take a
project that has so much potential and worth for the community and turn it into
something that does not actually benefit the participants. A community center is one such
thing that can be compromised in terms of building and funding. Due to its large
structure, corners could be cut, but the nature 8 and function of a community center

METHODS OF THE STUDY AND SOURCES OF DATA
Planning

Preparation of program and schedule of implementation planning of

schedule of works, placed to be visited, and data to be gathered.

Research

Careful study that is done to fine and report new knowledge about

something and getting information about a subject.

Collecting

Gathering and collecting of the data needed facts and information.

Selecting

Classifying and segregating data from the most important one to the less

important. Deleting data that is not related to the study.

Interview

A formal consultation,a meeting at which information and a report or

reproduction of information so obtained.

Scanning

Carefully to look over or read a book in order to find something.

Survey

Asking one person or may people a question or a series of a questions in

order to gather information about what most people do or think about something.
Took pictures.
Organizing

Took pictures of the site as an added information for the project.

Arranging the fact according to the order of the sequence of the given

outline.
Compiling

Systematically arrangement of all the data gathered.

As shown by the literature review, a responsive design approach best fits the context of
this research design. For this reason both qualitative and quantitative data were gathered
through various methods. I completed the research in a way to fully utilize the ideas and
input from various community members. It was based off of my belief that Brgy.Cristo
Rey citizens would have valuable input into what type of community center
