Kohler High School senior Amelia

Grose awarded HVK Scholarship
This week at Kohler High
School, Herbert V. Kohler Jr.
stepped onto the stage to present
a 2016 HVK Scholarship in the
amount of $60,000 to senior Amelia Grose. Amelias achievements
and leadership characteristics are
clear and undeniable, but it was
still a shock, because two HVK
Scholarships had already been
awarded this month.
On May 11, Natalie Black
Kohler presented the rst of
three HVK Scholarships to Hollis Rammer at Sheboygan South
High School. Because there is
generally just one award presented annually, the other two nalists, Kayla Lentz of Plymouth
High School, and Amelia Grose
of Kohler High School, likely
believed they were out of the running for the award. But over the
past three weeks, three Herbert
V. Kohler Scholarships totaling
$180,000 were awarded to this
trio of high-achieving, and surprised, young women.
While rare, there is precedent
for multiple HVK scholarships
in the awards 47-year history.
Kohler Foundations Scholarship
Committee Chair, Natalie Black
Kohler, explains, Every HVK
nominee is an outstanding student, and a leader in their own
unique way. This year, however,
we were honored to interview
three extraordinary nalists,
each with her own distinct vision
for how she plans to change the
world.
From time to time, Kohler
Foundations Scholarship Committee has elected to award more
than one HVK Scholarship in
a given year, but it has been 35
years since three recipients were
named. The 2016 HVK Scholars
are special not just for their scholastic aptitude and achievements

over the past four years, but because of their abilities to realize
their goals, communicate persuasively, and demonstrate an aptitude for leadership.
The 2016 honorees are: Hollis
Rammer (South High School),
daughter of Anthony and Pamela Rammer, planning to attend
Wellesley College; Kayla Lentz
(Plymouth High School), daughter of Gina and Jerey Lentz,
planning to attend Harvard
University; and Amelia Grose
(Kohler High School), daughter
of Gregory and Jennifer Grose,
planning to attend the University
of Notre Dame.
As a National Merit Finalist
and AP Scholar, Amelia Grose has
excelled in the most rigorous academic courses oered by Kohler
High School. She scored a 2240
on the SAT, attended Badger Girls
State, and is a member of National Honor Society. At the same
time, she has been very involved
in theater as a creative outlet both
in Kohler and with Theater for
Young Audiences in Sheboygan.
Amelia performed the lead role in
the last three major Kohler High
productions, and served as the Director for last years production of
Harvey.
During her HVK interview,
Amelia discussed her future
plans, which are both ambitious
and well-crafted. With great detail, Amelia shared her vision for
addressing climate change, preserving biodiversity, and sustaining ecosystems around the world.
Her passion for science, policy,
and conservation was ignited on a
eld research trip to Costa Rica,
where she served as a citizen scientist with the Earthwatch Institute. Alongside Ph.D. candidates
from Texas A&M University,
she gathered data about mammal

movement along biological corridors. Not only did Amelia nd her

calling on that memorable trip,
she also assimilated incredible
amounts of information that have
helped her continue to formulate
her own plans for making lasting
change in the world.
Next year when Amelia attends Notre Dame University,
she will double-major in Biological and Environmental Science,
and Spanish. She plans to pursue
post-graduate study, additional travel to Central and South
America, and conduct research
in rain forest conservation. She
impressed Kohler Foundations
committee by clearly articulating
what she sees as the most signicant challenges to biological conservation, and how scientists and
governments should address the
multitude of issues created by climate change.

Kohler Co. is pleased to serve as the title sponsor for the KOHLER Grand Prix

among the most exciting in motorsports

of the 100th Indianapolis 500, said David
Kohler, President and CEO of Kohler Co.
Kohler shares this passion and enthusiasm
and we are excited to welcome Verizon IndyCar fans to our home to take part in the
return of IndyCar racing at Road America,
one of the most beautiful and unique tracks
in the world.
Founded in 1873 and headquartered

PGA Championship at Whistling Straits,
and will host the Ryder Cup in 2020.
Kohlers Old Course Hotel in St Andrews

Open. Kohler recently broke ground on
LODGE KOHLER, a hotel development

Kohler is a great t for Road America,
said George Bruggenthies, Road Americas

This place allows our cars to stretch their

win in 2007, and I am looking forward to
coming back.

president and general manager. They have

a very unique brand that has been instrumental to Road Americas success through
previous partnerships and initiatives while
remaining dedicated to supporting the local
area. We feel that Kohler Co. will incorporate itself very well in the racing community through this entitlement and we are
very excited to have them on board in such
a prestigious capacity.
The Verizon IndyCar Series KOHLER
Grand Prix takes center stage at Road
America June 23-26 as an international
lineup of drivers will have their chance to
battle it out for glory on one of the worlds
most revered road courses. The rst IndyCar race at Road America took place in
1982, when Hector Rebqaue was crowned
as the winner. In 2000, Dario Franchitti
set the track record with a lap of 1 minute,
39.866 seconds (145.924 mph) set in qualifying for the 2000 race. Legendary drivers
Mario Andretti, Michael Andretti and Emerson Fittipaldi have each won three times
at Road America, while Jacques Villeneuve
and Paul Tracy were two-time winners on
the high-speed course.
Ten current Verizon IndyCar Series drivers have raced on the circuit, with Sebastien Bourdais winning the last Indy car race
there in 2007 under Champ Car sanction.
I am really excited to see Road America
back on the 2016 Indy car schedule, said
Bourdais, a four-time Indy car champion
who currently drives for KVSH Racing.

2015-2016 Kohler Middle School Math Teams Year

Kohler Middle School took
three teams to its rst math meet
at Lakeland College for the 25th
Michael J. Devaney Lakeland
College Math Meet on November
9, 2015. Team 1 placed third out
of 45 teams. Members include:
Aleah Roeber (8), Eli Nugent
(8), Ian Kanz (8), Grin Otte
(8), Tanner Thyes (7), Lily Montes (7), Natasha Sokhi (7), and
Toby Landes (6). Aleah Roeber
and Natasha tied for 4th/5th place
with a score of 24. Chris Zhang
took second with a score of 26,
one point behind rst place. This

was a great and exciting start for

the team, said Math Team coach
Lacy Wiest.
Ten members then participated in the MATHCOUNTS meet
at Acuity on February 6, 2016.
Those members include: Chris
Zhang (8), Courtney Yang (8),
Grin Otte (8), Ian Kanz (8) ,
Eli Nugent (8), Lily Montes (7) ,
Natasha Sokhi (7) , Tanner Thyes
(7) , Cadi Zhang (7) , and Allyson
Foote (6). The teams top place
member at 15th place, Ian Kanz,
was a point short to continue to
the State Competition in Madi-

son. All still had fun and enjoyed

watching the Countdown Round
with the top 10 contenders.
Next, eight members got to
compete in early March in the
2016 Middle School State Mathematics Contest Sponsored by The
Wisconsin Mathematics Council. The members include: Aleah
Roeber (8), Ian Kanz (8), Brian
Zheng (8), Zach Coulis (8), Mansi
Patel (7), Tanner Thyes (7), Cadi
Zhang (7), and Allyson Foote (6).
The team was very proud of the
individual places they attained.
Cadi Zhang was awarded with All

State 2nd Team. Aleah Roeber

and Ian Kanz were both awarded
All - State 1st Team.
The nal meet was an online
international competition held by
UW-Whitewater, Purple Comet.
Cadi Zhang, Lily Montes, Natasha Sokhi, Courtney Yang, and
Owen Multer competed as a team.
Ian Kanz, Zach Coulis, Eli Nugent, Chris Zhang, Brian Zheng,
and Grin Otte made the second
team. The team is still waiting on
results. This was a fun and challenging competition.
Eliaine Sun, Sophia Sokhi, Co-

hen Otte, Charlie Roeder, Kimmy

Schipper, and Elle Borowski were
also members of this years math
team.
It was a great year with the
team, many accomplishments
happened for us this year. I hope
all the 8th graders join the High
School Math Team next year and
the 6th and 7th grade members
continue to be on the team and
help it grow and improve like they
did this year. I could not be more
proud of these students and their
hard work and talent, said Wiest.

Earth Day in 1994, GLOBEs
worldwide implementation was
launched in 1995. Kohler was one
of the rst fty schools receiving
grant money to begin the program.
Now, students in over 112 countries participate in GLOBE data
collection led by 57,581 trained
teachers. The Kohler GLOBE
Program is among 24,507 other
schools that also collecting data.
Over 10 million students have
contributed more than 22 billion
measurements to the GLOBE database. Sponsorship of GLOBE
is a joint venture of the U. S.
National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) and the
National Science Foundation with
support from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Department of
State.
Vision: A worldwide community of students, teachers, scientists,
and citizens working together to
better understand, sustain, and
improve Earths environment at
local, regional, and global scales.
Mission: To promote the teaching
and learning of science, enhance
environmental literacy and stewardship, and promote scientic
discovery.

The GLOBE program in Kohler

is made up of students in Biology and Honors Biology. These
students share the responsibilities of collecting and recording
atmospheric data every school
day. Upper classmen in Honors
Chemistry, AP Biology, and Honors Physics contribute to the collection of hydrology data during
the fall and spring. These students
make up Kohlers Testing the Waters Team.
The atmospheric data collected
by students in GLOBE is entered
onto an international web-site
data base. Students enter measurements such as high and low
temperatures, amounts of precipitation and pH, cloud type, and
relative humidity. When combined with other data presented
by students and teachers throughout countries around the world,
scientists can interpret and observe changes in the environment.

Overall, this program allows every participating student, teacher,

and scientist to track and learn
more about our constantly changing environment.
Biology teacher, Jessie Good,
and chemistry and physics teacher, Dana Krejcarek, serve as advisors.

Honors Biology and AP Biology Genetics

and Information Transfer
Honors Biology students at
Kohler High School have recently completed the biotechnology
component of the biology curriculum. Biotechnology is the
technology of using living things
to create useful products. Biotechnology has historically been used
in the making of bread, wine,
soap, the treatment of waste, and
the production of cheese. Selective breeding of agricultural animals and selective practices in
crop planting have occurred for
hundreds of years. Biotechnology has changed due to the advancements of technologies such
as computers and software in the
1970s to include the development
of human insulin for the treatment
of diabetes, human growth hormone for children, and identication of specic genes responsible
for genetic disorders, and in some
cases treatment for those disorders.
Honors Biology students learn
and then use the steps necessary
to move a gene from one organism to another. The process involves the isolation of plasmid
DNA, using endonuclease restriction enzymes to cut DNA at specic sites in the DNA sequence,
ligation of the plasmid fragments,
transformation of bacteria, prepa-

ration and casting of agarous gel,

electrophoresis of restriction enzyme digested DNA, staining,
viewing, and photographing the
gel, and learning the process by
which scientists determine DNA
fragment size.
This is the forth year of the College Boards revised AP Biology
curriculum which focuses on enduring, conceptual understandings and the content that supports
them. This approach may enable
students to spend less time on factual recall and more time on inquiry-based learning of essential
concepts and better help them to
develop the reasoning skills necessary to engage in science practices. This redesigned curriculum

will also provide students the

experiences necessary to design
a plan for collecting data, analyzing data, applying mathematical
routines, and connecting concepts. One area of the new curriculum, Big Idea 3 Genetics and
Information Transfer, has students
conduct two biotechnology investigations. One investigation is a
bacterial transformation in which
Kohler students transformed E.
coli with an ampicillin resistance
gene which was fused with the
GFP (green uorescent protein).
The resultant ampicillin resistant
bacterial colonies were grown on
an ampicillin plate and exhibited
uorescent properties with an ultraviolet light source. The second

investigation has Kohler students

completing a restriction enzyme
analysis of DNA and then calcu-

lating the sizes of restriction enzyme fragment length and create a

standard curve.

PREPARING FOR 2016-17

We are on track with hiring quality teachers
for the 2016-17 school year, producing a
preliminary budget, performance evaluations,
and the master schedule. It is from the
focused, skillful, and tireless work by our
administrators, business manager, faculty,
and support staff that Kohler schools will
successfully launch a new school year.
END OF YEAR CELEBRATION
Appreciations and recognitions are set for
celebration on May 11. The Kohler School

verbal refusal to follow directions, talking back
or socially rude interactions. Our focus is more
on minor defiance which would be described

as engaging in failure to respond to adult requests when asked the first time or to ignore a
rule that they know and understand.
Assessment: The Forward Exam is going
well. It is taking about half of the time that
was expected. I am looking forward to getting
the result by late summer or early fall so we
can take a look at the data and analyze our
programming and curriculum needs, and to
see where are students are in relation to being
college and career ready. This data will also be
reflected in the 2015-16 school report cards
that will be out in the fall.
MS-HS Principal Report (Timothy Brown)
Homework Task Force
This past month the high school addressed
how we approach student balance from a staff
perspective. We have focused on creating
healthy dialogue between staff, as well as
between students, staff, and parents. To these
ends, we have created a collective philosophy
on the purpose of homework. Further we have
created a task force to study and present best
practices and current pedagogy for the 201617 school year. In this way we can all agree,
support, and document those ways we can
help all students in our learning community
become inspired, engaged and achieve.
National History Day
Last meeting, I updated the board on our
21 entries at the State National History Day
competition. Last weekend was our state

recognize the time, efforts and talents of these

fine students. Mrs. Monica Labudde and Mr.
Matthew Bayens have spent countless hours
and dedication to helping all of our students
achieve greatness in the classroom and
extending learning beyond the four walls of
our building.
Classroom Highlights
Visual Art students were able to take
advantage of an experience by which they
were able to interview and observe Jim Neel
talked about the creative processes. Mr.
Neel is a professor of Art in Alabama. It is
opportunities such as these that enrich our
learning experience for our students. Special
thank you to John Wheeler for creating
experiences for students to see art in action.
2016-17 Community of Recognition in
Supporting the Arts
The Village of Kohler and Kohler School
District earned a Top 100 Community for
supporting Musical Arts. This is the third
time in fifteen years we have earned this
distinction. This speaks volumes for the
support our community places on the arts, our
Performing Arts Organization and its members,
and our school and students. This is truly a
wonderful distinction and honor for our entire
community to take great pride in.
Staffing
Before the board we offer two excellent
candidates. We recognized, early in the hiring
process that our mission to attract, retain and
retain the finest staff possible is not possible
over the summer months. We actively
searched candidates early in the process and
we believe we have found the best fit for our
learning community.
Our first position, Athletics and Activities
and Director of Community Service. Our
candidate, Joseph Hildebrand, truly wowd
our interview committee. He outpaced a
field of over 70 applicants on paper and in
the interview process. He demonstrated
true enthusiasm, showcased his managerial
skills by the youth basketball program he
has developed while in the Grafton School
District. Beyond the raw resume, what really
stood out was Joes ability to extend. By this
I mean his passion to grow all of our k-12
Athletics and Activity programs, showcasing
true knowledge of the learning that takes place
at every developmental level. It is our belief
that he will be able to take what Doug Bocchini
created and take all of our programs to the
next developmental step towards continued
success.
Our second position, Middle and High School
Science. Our candidate, Rebecca Rabideaux
is one of those special up and coming
teachers. As you can see from her resume,
she has a Masters Degree from Drake
University. Moreover, what set her apart was
her real-world experience of working in a
Laboratory. Her interview demonstrated her
high maturity level and emotional IQ. Her
youth and training gives her 21st century skills
and we believe she will be a perfect fit for
our newly created Engineering Design and
Conceptual Chemistry classes, both of which
are a project-based model.
Review of District Finances

Vandalism
Many of you are already aware of some vandalism that had
occurred in Ravine Park near the school. Due to citizens notifying
our police department right away, the actor was determined and
apprehended. Incidents like these strike a nerve in our community.
I had several conversations with residents about how we can stop
this from occurring. The Kohler PD was able to be as responsive
as it was due to great involvement from citizens, and I ask that
the vigilance continue. Call our department when incidents are
occurring. Ask the dispatcher to have an ocer sent. We cant
always prevent senseless incidents, but we will do our best in
holding those responsible accountable.
Bike Safety Day
The Kohler Police Department is again sponsoring the Bike
Safety Day on Saturday, June 11th. Bike inspections start at 11:30
and the obstacle course will start at12:30 pm. The event is being
held at the Village Hall. Licenses are required and are available
for $2.50 for any bikes with wheels larger than 16". A detailed
yer is located on our website at www.kohlerpolice.com. Bike
license forms are on the website too, it could be lled out before
you arrive. There will be forms available the day of, but it would
make that portion go more quickly. All participants will receive
an inspection of their bike, a free helmet and a bike accessory. We
will also be supplying free soda and chips after the days events.
Scams
Scammers are again calling and posing as the IRS and threatening
residents if money isnt paid. They threaten the homeowner that
they will call the police/sheri and have them arrested if they
dont pay the judgments against them. The phones caller ID may
even state IRS. These are NOT legitimate calls. Do not give them
any money. Hang up as soon as you can. The IRS does not phone
people about judgments and we would not pick you up for the IRS.
If you get targeted by one of these or another attempt to swindle
you of your money and have questions, call our department for
advice, 459-3877. For more information you can go to the IRS

FROM DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS

BRETT EDGERLE

Cross Connection Control (Backow) Program

The Village of Kohler is required to move forward with a cross
connection control (backow preventer) program. WDNR
Regulations require every water supplier to develop and
implement a comprehensive cross connection control program for
the elimination of existing cross connections and prevention, and
protection from all future cross connections.
Residential backow preventers may exist or be required on
lawn irrigation systems, wet re protection systems, hot water
heating (boiler) systems, swimming pool lls, water features,
etc. Backow preventers may also be required if there is another
water source on the site such as a well, pond, river, etc.
Backow preventers are the property of the water customer and
the responsibility lies with the customer for annual testing and
maintenance. The water customer must contract with a licensed
tester to perform the required annual tests. Most local plumbers
are certied to test backow preventers.
The contractor hired to oversee Kohlers backow program

is the rm of Aqua Backow, a national rm located in Elgin,

IL specializing in cross connection control management. Aqua
Backow can be reached at 847-742-2296 with any questions.
Your Village of Kohler contact, Brett Edgerle, can be reached at
920-459-3881.
All water customers will be contacted by Aqua Backow at some
point over the next few years to perform a site survey. Inspectors
will be surveying your property to be sure that your water systems
are protected from existing or potential cross connections.
The Kohler Cross Connection Control Program is designed
to safeguard public health. We ask for your cooperation with
our program, its enforcement, and any requests for access or
information that come from Aqua Backow or Village sta.
The Village will host an Open House at the Village Hall in early
July. This will give you an opportunity to ask any questions you
may have with the program with representatives from Aqua
Backow and the Village. Further details are forthcoming.
Garbage, Recycling, Yard Waste Carts
The Public Works Department has received complaints about
residents not bringing in refuse carts from the street at the end of
the pickup day. Please be courteous to your neighbors and help
keep the Village of Kohler a beautiful place to live by bringing
in your carts at the end of the day. As a reminder, all loose yard
waste must be in the yard waste cart (green lid). Branches may be
placed at the curb for chipping.
Garage Sale Signs
One temporary garage sale or for sale sign shall be permitted
on each lot or parcel. Signs located on public property will be
removed by the Public Works Department or Police Department.
Building Permits
A reminder that building permits are required for new structures,
additions, remodeling, accessory structures, pools, plumbing,
electrical, HVAC, siding, roong, fences, signs, modications
over $1,000 in market value, and driveways that encroach on
right-of-way. Any questions about building permits and/or permit
fees can be directed to the Public Works Department at 459-3881
or bedgerle@kohlervillage.org. Permit application forms are
now available on our website kohlervillage.org. It is necessary
to obtain approval from Kohler Co. (if stated on your property
deed) and the Village Plan Commission, before construction
begins on projects including, but not limited to: fences, accessory
buildings, garages, home additions and decks. Guidelines as to
what needs to be submitted to Kohler Company and the Village
Plan Commission are available at either kohlervillage.org or the
Public Works Department.
Storable Swimming Pools
Storable swimming pools, located within the Village limits of The
Village of Kohler, require an annual $50 permit. A storable pool
is any pool, which holds 1000 gallons of water or more. Storable
pools must be located 35 feet from all lot lines and meet ALL
electrical codes for the pump.
Landscape Mulch
Residents looking for landscape mulch are encouraged to call the
Public Works Department at 459-3881. Mulch will be delivered
to your home for $10/Cubic Yard plus tax. Deliveries will be on
Fridays only.
Road Work
Road work will continue through the end of June. The road work
will consist of new asphalt on East Park Lane, South Road, Grafton
Court, Market Street, Church Street (south of School Street),
Sunset Road and Hawthorn Lane. The road work will also replace
some curbing, driveway approaches, and sidewalks. Expect some
disruptions to your normal routines, and please drive courteously
and safely. Please contact the Department of Public Works at 4593881 for more details. Thank you for your cooperation.
