What is Project Life Cycle?

Project Life Cycle

PROJECT LIFE CYCLE refers to a series of
activities which are necessary to fulfill project
goals or objectives. Projects vary in size and
complexity, but, no matter how large or small,
all projects can be mapped to the following life
cycle structure:

Starting the project

Organizing and preparing
Carrying out project work
Closing the project

Project Life Cycle

It defines:
The phases of the project (TIME)
The work performed in each phase (WORK)
The input and output of each phase (RESULT)
The milestone of each phase (END SIGN)

Phases of
Project Life Cycle
1. INITIATION PHASE
The project idea starts in this phase, comes out of
the need to solve a problem, the observance of
ones environment, or the drive to innovate
something new.

This phase represents the project formulation,

feasibility studies and the strategic decisions
needed for the project to continue.

Phases of
Project Life Cycle
1. INITIATION PHASE

A feasibility study is conducted to investigate whether

each option addresses the project objective and a final
recommended solution is determined. Issues of feasibility
(can we do the project?) and justification (should we do
the project?) are addressed.

Once the recommended solution is approved, a project is

initiated to deliver the approved solution and a project
manager is appointed. Approval is then sought by the
project manager to move onto the detailed planning phase.

2. PLANNING PHASE
This phase represents planning, basic design,
budgeting, tendering and placing the project major
contracts.
During this phase, the project manager creates the
project management plan (PMP), a formal,
approved document to guide execution and
control. The PMP also documents scope, cost, and
schedule baselines.

2. PLANNING PHASE
Other documents included in the planning phase include:
Scope statement and scope documentation: A document that
defines the business need, benefits, objectives, deliverables, and
key milestones.
Work breakdown structure (WBS): A visual representation that
breaks down the scope of the project into manageable chunks.
Communication plan: This plan outlines the communication goals
and objectives, communication roles, and communication tools
and methods.
Risk management plan: This plan helps project managers identify
foreseeable risks, including unrealistic time and cost estimates,
budget cuts, changing requirements, and lack of committed
resources

3. EXECUTION PHASE
This phase involves the construction phase of the
project, equipment installation and testing.
This is where the construction work begins. After
a kick-off meeting, the project team begins to
assign resources, execute project management
plans, set up tracking systems, execute tasks,
update the project schedule, and modify the
project plan.

"The Project Life Cycle is absolutely

fundamental to project management. It
contains the sequence of phases through which
the project will evolve. Thus, it will significantly
affect how the project is structured.
