BATON ROUGE Governor John Bel Edwards has signed Representative Johnny Berthelots House Bill (HB) 834. HB 834 clarifies the process for collection of court costs in suits involving public bodies. The bill assists public entities in obtaining judgments of dismissal when they prevail in court, while further providing clerks of court the tools for efficient collection of court costs incurred by either public or private parties. This bill was a compromise between the clerks of court and local government, said Berthelot, and it streamlines the court cost process in a way that is a win-win. The bill received final passage on May 24, and Gov. Edwards signed the bill June 22. With the governors signature, the bill became Act 449 of the 2016 Regular Session and is now law.
