CN3/CN4 SD Card Firmware Upgrade Guide 1

Description: The rmware on the CN3 or CN4 may need to be updated from time to time. This process
takes about 15 minutes. This document will walk you through the process of updating the rmware
on the CN3 or CN4 mobile computer. This document wil also cover updating the SSPB, or Intermec
content, on the device as well. The same process is also used on the CN3e and CN4e.

Hardware\software Requirements: You will need internet access to download the les. You will also
need a blank mini SD card 128MB or larger with a USB SD card reader or PC with a card reader built in
and a powered dock for the device.
Upgrading CN3/CN4 Firmware:The rmware upgrade process is simple but done in two stages. The
rst stage is upgrading the OS and the second stage is upgrading the SSPB. Follow these steps to
upgrade both the OS and SSPB.
1. Go to www.intermec.com and click on Support and then Downloads. Download the version of
rmware for the device you are trying to upgrade; as well as, the latest SSPB for the device.

2. The les you download will be .exe les. Run both the .exe les and it will copy the les to your PC.
3. Go to the folder where the les were installed to on your PC. The default location is
C:\Program Files\Intermec folder.
4. Copy all the les in the OS folder on your PC to the root of your SD card. Dont copy the folder to the
card just the les inside the folder.

5. With the les copied to the mini SD card, remove the battery from the CN3/CN4 and you will see a
door with two screws. Loosen those two screws to reveal the mini SD card slot. Insert the card and
tighten the screws.

6. Cold boot the device by pressing the black button next to the battery contacts with the stylus.

7. Replace the battery and place the unit in a dock. Do not power the unit off or disrupt this process, it
could damage the unit. The unit will reboot and load the les. When it is nished, you will see Autoash Complete and you can then remove the battery and the SD card.
8. Delete all the les on the SD card and then go to the Intermec directory and look for the SSPB install
es. Copy the SSPB folder and the _SSTransferAgent.xml le to the SD card.

9. Insert the SD card back in to the device and this time you will need to do a clean boot. To clean boot
the CN3, put the battery in as your holding down the power button until you see the message on the
screen for clean boot then you can release the power button. For a clean boot on the CN4 hold down
the power button and both left side buttons while putting the battery in and keep them down till you
get the message. Follow the on screen instructions to execute the clean boot.
10. With the clean boot started, put the device back in to the dock and let it boot. Once it gets to the
Windows default screen you may see a short delay before the les start installing. You will see the
les installing with a message bubble at the top of the screen. When it is done, the device will reboot
one more time. Once it is rebooted, remove the SD card and the device is ready to use.
