Out in Full Force

While harvesting of pulse crops such as peas and

lentils got underway a couple of weeks ago, the
harvesting of wheat is now taking off. This was the
scene Monday evening north of Glasgow as Pattison
Farms have their big green machines rolling. Talking

to Jeff Pattison yesterday, he says this particular field

is yielding around 70-to-80 bushels to the acre. And
this is a dry land crops! In the top photo you can see
the water tower near Glasgow High School and the
Doppler Radar at the National Weather Service.

Uber, a ride-sharing service, works by allowing

people to become independent contractors and use
their own vehicles to provide rides. Customers order up
a lift using an app on their mobile devices.
Montana, along with Wyoming and Alaska, were
the only three states in the U.S. that didnt have Uber.
During the legislative session last spring, State
Representative Boldman-Hill Smith, a Democrat
from Missoula, worked with Republicans Senator Ed
Buttrey of Great Falls, Representative Austin Knudsen
of Culbertson and Representative Daniel Zolnikov of
Billings to get a bill in front of Governor Steve Bullock
that deregulated motor carrier laws in the state.
It was passed and on Monday evening, BoldmanHill Smith became Ubers Passenger Zero and took a
ceremonial trip from the official launch party at Plonk,
a wine bar in downtown Missoula.
By the end of the this week, Uber is expected to be
available in Montana staterwide. In smaller rural towns,
however, it will depend on drivers signing up to make it
accessible to customers. The limiting factor is going to
be interest by drivers.
Brian Gebhardt is the general manager of Uber
Montana.
According to the Uber website, you can:
Make great money You can drive and earn as much
as you want. And, the more you drive, the more youll
make. Plus, youll get paid weekly and your fares get
automatically deposited.
Set your own schedule Only drive when it works
for you. Theres no office and no boss. That means
youll always start & stop on your timebecause with
Uber, youre in charge.
Signing up is easy Sign up today and youll be on
the road in no time. Plus, signing up takes less than 4
minutes. Dont wait to start making great money with
your car.
Those looking for a ride can go to Ubers official
website at www.uber.com and download the free mobile
app.
Of course, weve already got an exceptional public
transportation service here in Glasgow and surrounding
community, that being the Valley County Transit which
runs from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
But, someone might be able to make some extra
dough via Uber if interested in hauling folks around
after 11:00.

Sage grouse hunting open again in

Montana for month of September
Expanded opportunities for sage grouse hunting
will be offered this year in Montana as bird populations
have rebounded well after two years of favorable spring
weather conditions.
Though the brief decline and subsequent bounce
back of sage grouse numbers can likely be attributed
to weather and normal cycles in bird populations,
the population numbers and quick rebound are
encouraging, said Catherine Wightman, wildlife habitat
and Farm Bill coordinator for Montana Fish, Wildlife &
Parks.
These kinds of population cycles are normal, what
were hoping to do with our habitat conservation efforts
and monitoring work is to keep the dips in population
from being so dramatic, Wightman said.
Sage grouse season opens Sept. 1 and runs through
the month, closing Sept. 30. The bag limit is two birds
with a possession limit of four.
Sage grouse populations struggle with habitat
fragmentation, impacts from energy development and
the conversion of sagebrush steppe habitat to cropland.
However, decades of efforts at monitoring sage grouse
and conserving their habitat in Montana has paid off.
In 2015 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decided the
bird didnt warrant listing on the Endangered Species
List because of ongoing habitat conservation work in
Montana and throughout their range.

Helping livestock producers understand more rules by the FDA

Montana
State
University
Extension beef cattle specialists
will host summer meetings
across Montana to help livestock
producers understand a new ruling
by the United States Food and Drug
Administration concerning feedgrade antibiotics.
The veterinary feed directive, or
VFD, was developed by the USFDA
and will impact how producers feed
their livestock. The VFD impacts
feed-grade antibiotics that are
medically important, which are
antibiotics used in both human and
animal medicine. The VFD rule will
be implemented on Jan. 1, 2017.

In preparation for the rule, MSU
Extension Beef Cattle Specialists
Megan Van Emon and Rachel
Endecott and Montana Veterinary
Medical Association President-

Elect Katie Rein will present a series

of meetings throughout Montana.
The meetings will focus on the VFD
basics, label changes, veterinaryc l i e nt - p at i e nt - r e l at i o n s h i p s ,
required information on a VFD
form, impacts on minor species and
other information. The goal of the
meetings is to provide information
that will help attendees aid in the
ease of implementation of the VFD
rule.
Meeting attendees will be given
information in a binder, courtesy
of the Western Extension Risk
Management Education Center.
