Friendships in the Bible

Friendships in our lives

Jesus
Best Friends Forever
How do you address God when you’re praying to Him? (i.e.
Lord, Lord God, Jesus, etc.)

A brother…
Read Hebrews 2:6-18

The writer of Hebrews tells us that Jesus is to be considered

our brother, not our aloof impersonal sense of a distant “god”
but a brother.

• We have been looking at what makes a friend for the

past few weeks – what were those things?
• What makes Jesus our brother and friend according
to Hebrews 2?

Do as I say…
Read John 15:12-17

It seems kind of pushy, doesn’t it? “This is my command.”

But friendship often involves commands (at least subtly)
“come with me,” “listen to me,” “call me.”.

• What are some of the subtle commands that we give

friends?
• What are Jesus’ commands to us, His friends?
You need a friend…
Read Mark 2:13-17

Jesus spends time with tax-collector and sinners. (This

shouldn’t be entirely surprising, all of YOUR friends are
sinners after all.) He does it because he recognizes that
they need friends, and because He doesn’t give in to the
petty human (sinful) idea that some people are beneath us.

• Have you ever reached out to someone who needed

a friend just because they seemed lonely? Our
culture tells us that it’s patronizing to do that, is it?

Your spot in the Bible…

Read John 21:20-25

Jesus has a relationship with each of us and each of us get

to see the “many other things that Jesus did.” They are the
stories of our lives. They are the stories of when He
answers prayer, when He forgives us, when He leads us into
a fuller understanding of Him.

BFF Time
Get together with someone at this table. Seriously. And talk
to them about your story with Jesus:
• When did your story begin? What have some of the
highlights and the lowpoints been? If you haven’t had
highlights or lowpoints, why haven’t you? (I mean,
isn’t that sort of a normal thing for friends to have?)
What are you looking forward to as you grow in your
friendship with Him? (p.s. “heaven” is a weasel
answer unless you explain it)

Praying with friends

Tonight’s prayer time is going to be a little different. Take a
candle and light it from the Christ candle. We are going to
specifically come personally, alone and vulnerable to Jesus,
our friend – no outloud prayers.

a cross colored
world
BFF is over.  But +Vespers+ isn’t. Starting next week
we’re going to be engaging a series called “a cross colored
world”, talking about how being a Christian engages the
world and its problems.

Please don’t throw this away. If you’re not going to use it, leave it for
someone else to use.
