Classroom Procedures

Entering in the morning

Come in silently--not quietly, silently
Unpack & make sure you have these things:
Homework
Agenda
Laptop
Charger
Two pencils (check back buckets if you need
one!)
Interactive Notebooks
Folders
A book to read for fun!
Place homework & opened agenda in your box.
If you have any notes, they should be given directly
to Mrs. Kennedy. (Put them in her hand; dont set
them on her desk!)
Make your lunch choice (see front board) for choice
and move your magnet on the white board to the
appropriate location.
Check out what were learning for the day by
looking at the standards and essential questions!
Sit silently at your desk and work in Typing
Club--homework should be done at this point, but if
not, do it now!!
If you need to go to the library, get water, or go to
the restroom, silently raise your hand with your
number signal (1 for restroom, 2 for water, 4 for
library)
As soon as the tardy bell rings, close your computer
and get ready to be called to Morning Meeting.

Morning Meeting
Tables that are sitting quietly, with their computers
closed, will be called to Morning Meeting first.
Morning Meeting is a GREAT way to start the day
and get ready to learn, but we only have a limited
amount of time, so you HAVE to remain quiet during
transitions (only talk to a neighbor if you need help
with something, are trying to help your neighbor, or
need a little more elbow room), and only talk when
youre given the opportunity to do so. Well all be
given a chance to speak at some point, but we need
to respect others chance to do so, as well.
We will review our school-wide/classroom rules and
talk about an area in the school or a character trait
that we all want to strive to attain.
A few students will be able to share each day. They
can share how theyre feeling, an interesting fact,
their plans for the weekend, what they did the
previous weekend, etc. (two sentence limit per
student, and keep it appropriate)!
Monday: Students #1-6
Tuesday: Students #7-12
Wednesday: Students #13-18
Thursday: Students #19-24
Friday: Students #24-27, and any that missed
their turns earlier in the week.
**For short weeks, numbers may be re-grouped,
based on how many days are in the week. If this
is not feasible, we may just skip sharing time
during that week.
For students birthdays we will recognize the
student by singing to him or her. Student will

also have a birthday chair cover for the day

and will receive a small gift.
To transition back to desks, students will be called
one row at a time to move back to their desks. This
should be a silent transition.
Students will wait quietly (with their computers
closed) until given further instruction.
Transitions
This will really depend on what is needed for each
lesson. Students should NEVER open their laptops or
get out materials unless specifically instructed to do
so.
All materials should be in students desks (Interactive
Notebooks, folders, laptops, pencils) or in their group
basket (dry-erase markers, felt erasers, scissors, and
glue sticks). If for some reason, a student does not
have a needed material, the Supply Manager for
the week will be in charge of helping the student
get the material (if its a student-specific material,
such as an Interactive Notebook, the student will just
have to go without until he or she can get the
material back--from home or wherever. This will
hopefully teach responsibility. Students will still be
given contents for the day and will have to put them
in his or her INB at another time; for computers, look
on with a neighbor!).
Labeling Work
Students will place their number in the top, right
margin and label their papers in the top, right-hand
corner (on the lines) with the following information:
Name
Date
Subject

Assignment
Turning in Work
Homework: students will turn their homework into
their cubbies, along with their agendas.
Classwork: students will turn their paper(s) into the
respective trays for the subjects ELA, Math, Science,
and Social Studies. These are located in front of the
teachers desk. Unless otherwise instructed, students
should turn in work face-up, with the top, left corner
pointing towards the window.
Interactive Notebooks
These notebooks are HEAVILY guided!! Students should
not just be writing in them on their own, but guided
by the teacher as to what to paste, draw, and write
in them.
Each subject notebook has its own color and should
be labelled as such.
Students will have a Table of Contents page printed
out and pasted in their notebooks.
After the designated Table of Contents pages,
students will number each page in the bottom left
hand and bottom right hand corners (depending on
page orientation).
For each entry, students will put the entry title across
the top of the page and the date in the top,
right-hand margin.
Again, students will follow instructions on what to do
in these and when--copy, cut, glue, write, color, etc.
If a student needs any materials (glue sticks, etc.)
he/she will tell the groups table manager, who will
be in charge of collecting the materials for the table.
Raising Hands and Getting out of Seats

Students are NEVER to get out of their desks without

permission (unless it is an emergency, such as a fire
drill, severe weather drill, or theyre about to throw
up).
To ask for permission to get out of their desks, or to
answer/ask a question, students will have a few
designated hand signals:
1: Restroom
2: Water
3: Pencil
4: Library
5: Ask/Answer Question
Going to the Bathroom
Children must raise their hands with the number 1
finger raised to ask permission to get up to go to the
bathroom.
Only one student is allowed out of the classroom at
any given time (unless teacher discretion allows
otherwise).
Students should walk to and from the bathroom
SILENTLY. This means exiting the room quietly (no
slamming doors), WALKING straight to the nearest
bathroom, on the right side of the hallway, doing
their business, and returning to class without
disrupting others.
Students should wash their hands in the restroom, not
use hand sanitizer when they get back (too many
germs on the doorknob that way)!
Reminders for students:
Only one student in a stall at any given time.
Lock the stall door.

Do your business in the toilet and use the

correct amount of toilet paper (use enough, but
not too much).
Check around to make sure you didnt
accidentally leave a mess, clean up if you did,
and flush.
Exit the stall.
Wet hands, get soap, and rub them together
while singing the ABC Song or Twinkle,
Twinkle.
While your hands are still close to the sink flick
them off a little bit, then go dry them with the
dryer. If paper towels are available, use them,
but make sure they make it all the way in the
trash can.
The bathroom is for doing your business; its not
for catching up with friends, singing, writing on
walls, or primping (excessively).
Getting Water
To ask permission to get out of their seats to get
water, students should raise the number 2 signal.
After being given permission, a student (one at a
time) may SILENTLY get up and go to the water
fountain in the back of the room.
Reminders for students:
You should not talk to or touch any of your
friends on the way to the water fountain.
Take the quickest route there; dont wander
around the room for a half hour!
Get as much water as you need, but if you
make a mess (splatters happen), please clean it
up!
Pencils

Each student will be assigned (4) pencils with his/her

number on them.
The Pencil Home will be the Ready to Write pencil
bucket in the back of the classroom. Students will be
able to borrow (2) of their pencils from the pencil
bucket at a time.
Each student will need to have (2) pencils at his/her
desk at all times.
If a pencil breaks or gets dull, it will be put in the
Sharpen, Please! bucket at the back of the
classroom, and a student may grab one of his/her
other pencils from the Ready to Write bucket. To
ask permission to do this, a student should raise
his/her hand with the number 3.
There should be two of each childs pencils in the
buckets at all times and two at each childs desk at
all times.
At the end of each nine-weeks, if a student still has
all four of his/her original pencils in the system, the
student will receive 18 extra Dojo Points (two for
each week) for organization/preparedness.
Media Center/ Classroom Library
To go to the Media Center or the Classroom Library
during a non-designated time, a student will need to
raise his/her hand with the number 4. When the
teacher calls on the student, he or she will clarify
which of the two they would like to go to. The
student will be able to proceed after being given
permission.
Media Center
Only one student should be out of class at all
times (unless teachers discretion allows
otherwise), so students should fly solo when

going to the library. No large groups. We should

have a specific day in the Media Center, so
everyone will have ample opportunity to go.
The student should go straight to the Media
Center SILENTLY, silently turn in his/her book,
silently choose a book (only exception is if
youre talking to an adult like Ms. Bullock), and
silently check out his/her book. If Ms. Bullock or
another adult helps in ANY WAY, remember to
say Thank you! Remember: You are a
representation of Ms. Jones and Mrs. Kennedy
anywhere you go!
Afterwards, the student should return to the
classroom and place his/her book either in
his/her desk or his/her bookbag, whichever is
most appropriate for that time of day (Think: Is
there any free reading time left today? Do I
already have a classroom book in my desk?)
A solo trip to the Media Center should NEVER
take more than 10 minutes!!
Classroom Library
Students are more than welcome to visit the
Classroom Library throughout the day. However,
Mrs. Kennedy and her mama paid a lot of
money for the books in this library, so they need
to be treated with love and care.
When a student finds a book that he/she wants
to read, he/she should place their book stick in
the books spot before pulling the book out.
Then, he/she needs to check the book out on the
Book Roster. The student can do this by writing
down his/her name & number, the book title,
and the date out on the roster.

Students may read these books in the Reading

Center if they have time, or they may take them
back to their desks, but these books should
NEVER leave the classroom, unless given specific
permission by Mrs. Kennedy.
When a student is done with a book, he/she
shall put it in the return bin. At the end of each
day, the Librarian for the week will empty the
bin, one-by-one. As he/she does this, the
Librarian will be in charge of crossing the
names off the checkout list and putting the
books in the correct order (based on stick
placement).
Asking/Answering a Question
Students should NEVER (unless its a serious
emergency) get up and approach the teacher to ask
a question.
If a student would like to ask a question, he/she
should quietly raise a 5 hand from his/her desk.
When the student is called on, he/she may ask the
question from his/her desk. If the student would like
to keep the subject more private, he/she may ask for
permission to get up and come to the teacher.
If a student would like to answer a question, he/she
should quietly raise a 5 hand from his/her desk.
When the student is called on, he/she may answer
from his/her desk.
If a student is asking to go to the nurse, he/she will
be told to come to Mrs. Kennedys desk. Mrs. Kennedy
will talk to the student, and if the nurse is needed,
the student will be given a pass to go to the nurse.
Lining Up & Walking in the Hallway

Students will only be able to line up when desks are

clear (or only have instructed materials on them)
and all table groups are silent.
The first people to line up should be the Line
Leader and Door Holder for the week (at lunch
time, this should also include the Sanitation
Engineer).
After the Line Leader and Door Holder line up,
table groups may begin to line up, based on which
group is the quietest.
As students line up, they should push in their chairs,
keep their hands behind them or beside them, and
WALK SILENTLY to get in line--no bickering over
placement!
The Line Leader will demonstrate perfect behavior
in the hall (or he/she will lose the job). The Door
Holder will hold the door for students until everyone
exits the room, turn off the lights, close the door, and
fall into the back of the line.
Students should ALWAYS be SILENT and RESPECTFUL in
the halls. We walk down the right side of the hall,
with our hands behind us or beside us (NOT
TOUCHING NEIGHBORS or the walls), and our lips
closed tight.
Follow Mrs. Kennedys given directions and stopping
points in the hall (normally directed to the Line
Leader).
Wherever we are transitioning to (Media Center,
Specials, Lunchroom, etc.), enter quietly, and wait for
given instructions.
Cafeteria
Before lunch, students should be given the
opportunity to go to the restroom in table groups (if

they need to go). Because more than one student

may be in the hallway during this time, the teacher
will need to stand in the doorway to monitor.
Students should follow somewhat normal directions
for lining up, with the addition of getting a squirt of
hand sanitizer from the Sanitation Engineer on the
way out the door. In addition, students will line up by
lunch choice. Home Lunch will line up first, followed
by Choice 1, Choice 2, and Choice 3. (Door
Holder can fall into the right place as needed.)
To get to the cafeteria, we will walk out of the
closest school doors and into the doors beside the
cafeteria.
We always go through the first line for lunch.
If Home Lunch students need to grab a milk or
utensils, they may quickly pass through the line to do
so.
Choice 1, 2, and 3 students will filter through the
lunch line. They should grab their napkin(s), milk, and
utensils before POLITELY asking for their chosen lunch
(and THANKING the lunch ladies afterwards). They
should then grab any fruits, veggies, other sides, and
condiments, before saying Thank you, and quietly
walking to the assigned table.
While at the table, students should not share or trade
food. Students should eat all that they were
given/grabbed, quietly. Students may talk quietly, but
should be reminded that they have less than thirty
minutes to eat, so they need to use their time wisely.
After lunch, students should quietly walk to the trash
area. Silverware goes in the chute at the bottom,
and the tray with everything else goes on top.

After dumping their trays, students should line up

quietly at the cafeteria exit. We will go out to recess
after this.
Snack Time
Students will bring HEALTHY, CLEAN snacks for snack
time. These can be:
Water (no fruit drinks, sodas, or Capri Suns)
Crackers (can be snack sandwiches, like peanut
butter crackers)
Pretzels (no chips, Takis, etc. please!)
Cheese sticks
Fruit
Veggies
Dry, non-sugary cereals (Cheerios, Raisin Bran,
etc.)
Students will only have instructed items on their desk
during snack time.
Table groups that are quiet and ready will be called
one-by-one to get their snacks from their backpacks.
If students feel the need, they may also grab a
paper towel from the back.
Students may eat quietly at their desks.
As students finish their snacks, they should keep their
trash at their desks. When it seems that everyone has
finished, the Environmental Support will come
around and collect students trash.
Recess
Students will go to recess ON TIME each day.
Students cannot lose recess time for misbehavior, but
will instead have to walk laps on the playground.
Students will be given the correct amount of time to
play and then will be called to line up to go inside.

The teacher will yell, Kennedys Kids! with her hand

raised. Students will have thirty seconds to line up. If
they line up within thirty seconds, they will get an
extra minute of recess the next day. If they do not,
they will lose a minute of recess the next day.
Brain Breaks/Silent Stretching
Sometimes, we may not be able to go outside for
recess, so we will do Brain Breaks. These will be
videos on GoNoodle! Students will be able to stand
up beside their desks (maybe spreading out a little
bit) to do these breaks. Students do not have to be
silent during this time, but they should be rather
quiet. If students get too loud, the Brain Breaks will
be ended.
Sometimes as a transition between lessons, the
teacher will lead the students in Silent Stretching.
This will be sort of like silent Follow the Leader, with
students silently mimicking the stretching that the
teacher does. Students will also stand beside their
desks for this activity.
Packing Up at the End of the Day
Students will gather the materials that they may
need for homework that night (with teacher
instruction; laptop, library book, INBs, etc.) and lay
them neatly on their desks.
When table groups have this accomplished and are
quiet, they will be called one-by-one to go get their
backpacks, bring them back to their desks, and pack
up.
During pack-up time, end-of-day jobs will be
executed (such as Librarian, Lunch Count-Reset,
etc.).
Dismissal

After students are packed up, they will be called to

line up in different groups:
Car Riders & Walkers will line up together first;
when their escort comes, they will exit quietly.
Bus Riders will line up last, in reverse bus order.
We will exit the school door closest to our
classroom. As we pass each bus, the respective
students for that bus will get on quietly and
respectfully.
Fire Drill
When the fire alarm goes off, students will SILENTLY
get out of their seats, and line up in
alphabetical/number order (Line Leader and Door
Holder will not be applicable here).
Mrs. Kennedy will grab the emergency alert binder,
located next to the door.
Students will wait for Mrs. Kennedys direction to file
out into the hall.
Students will exit the building through the closest
school door and follow Mrs. Kennedy to the
designated location.
Mrs. Kennedy will then do a head-count and make
sure all students are present/make note of who is
missing and why--alert a monitor if needed.
After we are released to go back into the building,
the class will follow Mrs. Kennedy, enter the building
SILENTLY, and walk back to their seats.
If students are able to follow all procedures in an
organized, cooperative manner, they will receive
Dojo points.
Severe Weather
In the event of severe weather (or a drill), students
will line up in alphabetical/number order (Line

Leader and Door Holder will not be applicable

here).
Mrs. Kennedy will grab the emergency binder
located beside the door of the classroom.
Students will wait for Mrs. Kennedys directions to file
into the hallway. They will then move to the
designated location and crouch down in their safety
positions.
Mrs. Kennedy will do a headcount to make sure all
students are present and will alert a monitor if any
are missing.
After we are released, the students will wait for Mrs.
Kennedys further instruction to stand up quietly and
file back into the classroom.
If students are able to do this in an organized,
cooperative manner, they will receive Dojo points for
participation.
