Evidence to support the theory that the UEFA Champions
League is the best club competition in the world could be
found at some of the supposedly lower-key matches played
on the final day of the group phase. In fixtures which had
greater relevance for home teams seeking third place in the
group than for the already-qualified visitors, Manchester
United FC and FC Barcelona opted to rest some regular
first-teamers and were soundly defeated by Fenerbahe

A recent study stated that sporting teams that wear red are
more likely to win than those dressed in other colours. The
theory was further enhanced at the 2005 UEFA Champions
League Final in Istanbul, but the circumstance surrounding
the outcome of this particular match had more to do
with fighting spirit and sporting phenomenon than theories
about jersey colour. Liverpool FC, with its history of European success, defied logic, overcame overwhelming odds,
and somehow produced footballs version of a Houdini act escapology in a UEFA Champions League context.

Rafael Bentez walked to the dressing-room at half-time

wearing red were also wounded, but with most of them the
ailment was psychological. With Stephen Finnan suffering

TACTICAL TOPICS
1. Defensive formations - the back lines?
For the first time, all sixteen teams who reached the knockout stages operated a zonal back four and structural
variations on the 4-3-3 theme. In some games, there was
a switch to three at the back for tactical or personnel
reasons. The shining example of this was Liverpool FCs
switch to a three-man defence during the second half of the
final in Istanbul, which heralded their memorable comeback.
There was also universal use of a midfield screen, with
Chelsea FCs French international Claude Makelele standing
out as the role model. The vast majority of teams in the
knock-out rounds operated with a single player in the
pivotal role, while three, on occasions, opted for a two-man

for another outsider. But along the long road to the shootout in Istanbul, some other interesting questions had been
raised.
2. Intense pressing ?
It has now become rare to encounter the fierce, hightempo pressing successfully exploited by the AC Milan side
of the early 1990s. All the teams in the UEFA Champions
League were proficient at pressurising the ball-carrier,
particularly when he entered their half of the field. But
only a few invested calories in collective pressure in
advanced areas of the pitch. Whereas the classical pressing
game was most aggressively practised when the opposition
had the ball in mid-field areas, many teams now focus on
crowding out the opposition by dropping back into deep

3. A countering mentality?

the opposition has it. The crucial issue is not how much
time you spend on the ball but rather how you use it.
AC Milan, Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC demonstrated that
the first priority is to look for the deep pass capable of
surprising the opposition before they have time to reassemble their defensive block.
Successful teams are undoubtedly equipped with sufficient
technical skills to keep the ball if they want to. But ballpossession is not an end in itself. The top teams want to

Milan, and that meant they didnt always take the right
decisions. That ability is one that is acquired with time and
experience. On the football field, decision-making boils
down to selecting and delivering the right pass, knowing
when and where to try a long-range shot or simply judging
the moments to play safety-first. Correct decision-making
is crucial to success and players have to be educated to

3. One solo move or moment of individual magic, such as
Ronaldinhos 89th-minute winner for FC Barcelona at

4. One decision by a player, a referee or a coach, such as
Rafael Bentezs second-half deployment of Dietmar
Hamann during the final against AC Milan.

TALKING POINT
Cup Winners Cup?
The fact that a couple of spot-kicks during a penalty shootout were enough to decide the 2004/05 winners underlines
how risky it is to comment on trends. AC Milan, one of the
pre-season favourites, could easily have lifted the trophy.
Indeed, at half-time in Istanbul, it took brave men - or the
most stalwart of Liverpool supporters - to predict that they
wouldnt.
Yet the roll of honour states quite clearly that, in the
two campaigns disputed under the new format, the title
has gone to an outsider - or, to quote Guus Hiddinks
description of the PSV Eindhoven side that gave AC Milan
a mighty battle in the semi-finals, dark horses, but dark
horses who are looking pretty sleek. Neither Liverpool nor
PSV went into the draw for the knock-out phase as groupwinners. Guus Hiddinks team promptly eliminated two

exemple.
Lutilisation de milieux rcuprateurs, dont linternational
franais Claude Makelele de Chelsea FC constitue
lexemple type, a galement t une constante. A partir

Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Juventus, Chelsea FC et AC Milan.
40
POINT DE DISCUSSION
Est-ce quil suffit de vouloir pour pouvoir?
41

vom FC Shakhtar Donetsk deutlich geschlagen. Dies zeigt,
Roberto Mancinis
Inter hatte zuvor in acht Partien achtzehn Mal getroffen,
Olympique Lyonnais erfolgreich gestoppt.

Rolle besonders hervortat.

Mannschaft weichen. Trotzdem lehrt uns die Torstatistik,
dass 20% der Treffer einer Einzelaktion entsprangen. In

A durch permanent gute Leistungen ausgezeichnet.
meisten europischen Ligen Meister geworden.
UEFA Champions League? Einige Beobachter erkennen
ausreichend bestndige Leistungen htte erbringen knnen,
Pokalteams ber gleich hohe Chancen verfgen?

61
DISKUSSIONSPUNKT
