Future Tense
The Future Tense is often used in the following conditions:
A) Predictions / statements of fact / sudden responses (will)
B) Intentions (going to)
C) Arrangements (Present Continuous Tense)
D) Scheduled events (Simple Present Tense)
A) Predictions:
1. The Sun will rise at 6.30 tomorrow.
2) In 2050, all students will have their own computers in school.
3) Do you think she will come soon?
B) Intentions: (plan)
1. I am going to buy a new car next month.
2. Are you going to play cricket after school?
3. My son is going to start a business after graduation.
C) Arrangements:
An arrangement is a plan for the future that you have already thought about and discussed with
someone else.
1. I am meeting my father at the airport tomorrow.
2. Our grandmother is visiting us this Diwali.
3. Are you doing anything on Sunday?
4. My sister is going to the dentist tomorrow
Going to Vs verb+ing
I am not going to write the exams next week. (I have planned not to write the exams.)
I am not writing the exams next week. (I have decided already not to write the exams..)
Note: The phrase going to in the 4th example emphasizes on plan or intention. However, when
we want to emphasize on when then it will turn into a scheduled event as given below.
Ex: My sister has an appointment with the dentist tomorrow.
D) Scheduled Events:
The Simple Present Tense is used to refer to future events that are scheduled (and are outside of
our control).
1. Hurry up! The train departs in 10 minutes.
2. I leave Hyderabad at 7 in the morning and arrive in New York in the evening the next day.
3. She has an appointment with the manager next week.

Correct Answers:
1. b; because he is expressing intention
2. b; because its a scheduled event.
3. b; because its a spontaneous decision about future actions. However, d is also possible if the
speaker had already intended to ask. But normally speaker makes a spontaneous decision when hearing the
question.
4. a; because speaker wants to know if John has any arrangement. However, c is also possible if
the speaker plans to do something with John and wants to know if he has any existing
arrangements.
5. c; because its a scheduled event.
