Persuasive Speech: Audience Assessment
Specific Goal:
My audience will believe that going just vegetarian isnt the only way.
Type of Claim: This is a claim of fact.
Ethos: Primary Ethos:
a) Competence: As a practicing Semi-Vegetarian Ive done my research
b) Fairness: I will mention a benefit of eating red meat
Secondary Ethos: I will cite 3 references.
Audience Assessment: I think most of my audience hasnt probably thought about my topic so it will be
favorable in their minds.
Adaptation to Audience Attitude:
a. Common ground: I will explain the benefits of eating some meat.
b. Latitude of acceptance: I think the audience will see the nutritional benefits I why I think this is
better than vegetarianism.
Baby Steps: We can all start cutting out a certain food in our diet. Whether it be the late night shredded
beef burrito or the pork chops.
Pattern of Organization: I will be using a comparative advantage pattern of organization by using the
knowledge my audience probably has of vegetarianism or veganism.

Persuasive Speech: Outline
The path less take: Semi-vegetarianism
Introduction
I. Hook: Most of us know at least one Vegetarian in our lives and it could be hard for us
to understand at first.
II. Ethos: I am a current Semi-vegetarian; in my situation I dont eat red meat.
III. Proposition: Id like you guys to understand what it means to be a semi-vegetarian
and how to practice it.
IV. Preview:
1. What is Semi-Vegetarianism
2. The drawback and benefits of Red Meat
3. Getting the Right Nutrition
Transition: Firstly, let me explain to you guys what a Semi-Vegetarian is.
I.

Body
A Semi-Vegetarian is someone who eats meat occasionally or cuts out certain
meats. They can also be called Flexitarians
A.
One option is to cut out meat occasionally.
i. Enjoying whatever meat youd like occasionally.
ii. Your diet becomes more plant based, including more fruits and
vegetables.

a. For me, I needed a way to eat more vegetables, I never had


any.
iii. The reasons some people do it.
1. Some people because of health issues such as cardiovascular
problems.
2. Some people dont like the idea of
iv. These people will need to include more protein packed foods in their diet.
B. To take out certain meats out of your diet.
i. Red meat in my instance.
ii. I know many people who just arent fans of fish.
a. My friend never eats sushi because he worries about running
the risk of consuming too much mercury.
Transition: Now that you guys know why I dont eat red meat, Id like to explain the
nutritional side and reasons to why I dont like.

It was my brother-in-laws birthday in June and they make the best carne asada
and eating it just didnt taste good. I felt like I was eating it just to eat it and when I
saw it I didnt want to eat it. I was picking at it.
A. At work
i. Being at work, I ate burgers there and I couldnt do it. Although in n out
has 100% I felt a piece of cartilage and I wigged out. It wasnt the first
time I chewed on something in beef that made me second guess what I
was eating.
ii. We technically have no idea where the meet we buy in our grocery stores
can come from or how it was handled.
B. The bad side of red meat
i. Cancer has been associated with red meat, such as Colon cancer and
breast cancer because of the excess fat.
ii. Most people eat too much and can get many heart illnesses and
sicknesses.
1. Atherosclerosis is a common condition where too much plaque or fat
builds up in the walls of blood vessels and can cause a blockage of
blood flow. This blockage can cause a heart attack or stroke.

2. Research in 2013 by the Cleveland clinic reports the discovery that
carnitine, abundant in red meat and also added to popular energy
drinks, is metabolized to TMAO, a compound linked to clogged
arteries.
C. Nutrients it has and what we dont get by not eating it.
i. It includes many vitamins such as Vitamin B, iron, and zinc.
1. Vitamin B12 provides energy to all the systems in your body.
2. Iron helps to provide oxygen to your hemoglobin, your blood.
3. Zinc is correlated with the immune system to help combat sickness.

Since taking out red meat can leave certain nutrients out, lets talk about how to get
them in.
III.

We need certain nutrients.


A. The American Dietetic Association said, If a full vegetarian can meet all
necessary nutrition needs, a semi-vegetarian certainly can.
B. How can we get B12, Zinc, and iron into our diet.

i. B12-Sardines, fortified cereals, salmon, milk, and yogurt.


ii. Iron- Chickpeas which are legumes, Beans and lentils, which are also an
alternative source of protein, and even in cooked spinach.
iii. Zinc-Spinach, shrimp, kidney beans, garlic, flax seeds, and even
watermelon seeds. Peanuts and egg yolks.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, becoming a Semi-Vegetarian isnt easy for most but it is possible and there
can be benefits to it.
I. Signal speech is coming to an End: Let me close by saying, I chose this lifestyle
because I wanted it, Ive looked into it and decided it was the best path for me.
II. Summarize main points: Today I talked about what Semi-Vegetarianism is, why I cut
out Red meat, and the nutrients that are needed or taken out if eaten or not.
III. Reiterate the thesis: Id like you guys to take out of this how Semi-Vegetarianism
can benefit you and the nutritional side of it.
IV. End the speech memorably: I know it can sound a little crazy but I feel great, I
love it. Its finding out what works best for you and not being afraid of what others may
think.
V. Challenge the audience to respond: Just think about something you eat and have
felt uneasy about while eating. Were all guilty of eating something that after we think,
Wow, that really did not taste good. And try to cut it out of your life. You may find its
easier than you thought.
