Credit and Grading System

Students are continuously assessed during a semester for all the scheduled courses of the semester. In
each course one or more components and its examination are as under:
Components of a Course
Lecture

Examinations
Continuous Evaluation (CE)
Semester End Examination (SEE)

Laboratory/ Project
work
(LPW)

LPW Examination

Assessment:
Continuous Evaluation (CE): It may include different types of exercises i.e. Written Examination,
Term Assignment, Quiz, Oral Examination etc. All Exercises are continuously assessed during the
semester and marks are given. The total marks of all exercises are aggregated based on their inter se
weights to give the overall percentage marks in the CE examination. Weightage of this component in
over all result of the course is 40%.
Laboratory / Project work (LPW): Laboratory work / Project work are continuously assessed during
the semester. Each assessment is given marks and the total marks of all units of LPW are aggregated
based on their inter se weights to give the overall percentage of marks. Weightage of this component in
over all result of the course is about 20 - 40%. The assessment is mark based in all above examinations.
Semester End Examinations (SEE): Semester End examinations are arranged by the University at the
end of the semester for all the courses offered in the semester. After evaluating the answer books,
marks obtained by the student are converted into grades. Weightage of this component in over all result
of the course is about 40 - 60%.
Grading System:
Grades for the component examinations are given on the basis of the percentage marks obtained by the
student in the respective examination and converting percentage marks into corresponding Grades (G)
by using following table.

Course Grade:

Course grade is given only when the student passes all component examinations.

Marks of all component examinations are first aggregated on the basis of the component/inter
se weights. After the aggregate marks of the entire group, the performance of each student in
the course as a whole is assigned a grade based on his aggregate percentage viewed in relation
to the overall performance of the group.

Credit Courses:
These are compulsory courses. They are included in the schedules of various semesters. Credits earned
for these courses are considered for evaluating the academic performance levels of the student.
Performance Levels:
The performance level of the students at different stages of their study is given by the following
indices.
PIC Performance Index for the Course
SPI Semester Performance Index
PPI Progressive Performance Index
CPI Cumulative Performance Index
PIC= Equivalent grade point (g) corresponding to the course grade.
PPI = (Upto any stage of consideration)
-3-

= (i1 c1 + i2 c2 +i3 c3....) / (Sum of credits of all courses registered upto that stage),
where i1, i2, i3..... are PIC values of credit courses passed and c1, c2, c3are the credit values
of the respective courses.
SPI = This index is similar to PPI except that the stage to be considered is the end of a semester.
CPI = This index refers to the entire programme. It is calculated when the student passes the
programme. The method of calculation is the same as for PPI or SPI but the summation is for the
courses of all semesters of the programme.
Class & Percentage of Marks:
In case an equivalence between CPI values and class / % marks is desired, the same can be obtained as
given below.
% marks = (CPI 0.5 ) x 10
CPI Value
5.00 to 6.49 / *6.00 to 6.49
6.50 to 7.49
