Hinduism in America
It was a Saturday in June of 2014 when I attended the Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple in Utah,
which was rededicating the building they had recently finished. Part of the ceremony was to
dedicate the Kumbhas and the Kalashas that was installed on the Gopuram (flags on flag pole). I
was struck by the beauty of the Temple, the vibrant colors, and the many idols in the room.
As my grandchildren and I sat on the floor an elderly woman encourage my granddaughters
to sit closer. During the ceremony, she explained to them what the prayers meant. Later when the
Kalashas was being installed on the Gopuram, the same women did the same with me. From her
I learned the essence of Hinduism. I felt peace, safety, and oneness. She had made it clear that
they believe in only one Deity, but worship the Creator through many different Gods (idols).
Basically, We pray through them to translate and pass the prayers onto the Creator on our
behalf. Whatever my previous concept of Hinduism or the people, it did not include that though.
I learned later that Hinduism has no human founder. It is a mystical religion, leading devotees
to personally experience the Truth within and finally reaching the pinnacle of consciousness

where man and God are one. In this exposition essay, I will provide information and personal
insight regarding three areas of Hinduism:
1. Hindu History in America
2. Hindu Beliefs & Practices
3. Acculturation

HISTORY
The origin of the Hindu religion is so old that its original beginnings cannot be determined.
The practices and beliefs pre-date any historical records. Hinduism arrived in America with the
immigrants in the 1960s following the Immigration & Naturalization Act. Today, the Hindus are the
fastest growing population in America. According to the Hindu American Foundation (HAF),
growth in America has been profound. In the 1900s there were 1,700 followers. The population
grew to approximately 387,000 by 1980 and 1.1 million in 1997. As of 2008, the estimated Hindu
U.S. population of Indian origin is approximately 2.29 million. It is noteworthy to mention that the
United States Census Report as of 2010 state the Hindu population grew faster than any other
race group in the U.S. by 43%. (HAFSite.org)
To better understand the demographics of the Hindus, it is helpful to know that Hindus are the
most educated and earn the most on average except for the Jews. Below is a table of comparison
between Hindus and other religions in regards to socioeconomics and education in America.

With such rapid growth the organization and hierarchy still remains minimal, except for those that are
over a specific temple and deliver the services and ceremonies to the congregation. In ancient Indic
civilization there was a form of hereditary hierarchy based on four general occupational groupings
(varna) which included workers, business people, law enforcers and lawmakers, and priests. Within the
four groups were thousands of sub-groups (jati). In Hinduism, there is no basis for a discriminatory caste
system in Hindu scripture. The Vedic and non-Vedic scripture teaches the concept of equality of all
mankind. Hindus have a hymn:
Ajyesthaso akanishthaso ete sambhrataro vahaduhu saubhagaya
No one is superior, none inferior. All are brothers marching forward to prosperity. (HAFSite.org)

BELIEFS & PRACTICES

All Hindus worship one Supreme Reality, which is called by many different names. Hinduism is a
family of traditions that emphasizes experience, evaluation, and offers overarching guidelines rather than
absolute lists of dos and donts or commandments in regulating individual behavior. In Hinduism, all
actions are guided by Dharma. Hindus also believe that the Divine are manifested in different forms, can
be worshipped by various means, and speaks to each individual in different ways to allow them to
believe in God and to know God. In order to believe and know Dharma, Hindus recommend the practice
of prayer to achieve moksha (oneness with Creator). Though there are no obligatory guidelines for
praying in frequency or length and no one will be condemned for lack of prayer. Progress towards
moksha is proportional to the spiritual effort made by each individual to achieve moksha. (Prothero, pg
121, par. 1)

Hindus have key scriptures, which are rich and extensive collections of ancient religious writing. The
texts are classified into two categories: Shruti and Smriti. The word Shruti literally means heard and
Hindus believe this to be eternal truths to natural law. The texts are revealed or divine in origin and are
believed to contain the foundational truths of Hinduism. The Shruti texts are the Vedas: Rig, Sama, Yajur
and Atharva and the Upanishads: numbering over 100 and containing methods of self-understanding,
God, and the nature of the world. The Smriti, meaning memory are meant to remind one of the eternal
truths of Shruti, to read and interpret in light of changing circumstances over kala (time), desha (land),
and guna (personality). Texts of the Smriti are the Upavedas: (which has four main text) Ayurveda
-science of health and life, Dhanurveda-science of warfare, Gandharvaveda-the study of aesthetics, and
delineates all forms, Arthashastra-guidance on public administration, governance, economy, and politics.
The others texts are Puranas, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavad Gita, Agama Shastras.
(HAFSite.org)
Along with the scripture texts, Hindus believe in many different things that its hard to count them all.
Hinduisms foundation in the Nine Beliefs of Hinduism, which determine thoughts and attitudes about life,
which in turn direct action. With action creation of destiny occurs. (worldreligionnews.com) Like other
religions, Hindus believe in a one Supreme Being, karma, a spiritual leader known as a Satguru,
reincarnation and endless cycles of creations, all life is sacred and there are many ways to salvation
besides religion. The most unique of the Nine Beliefs is the four Vedas, the worlds most ancient
scripture, and venerate the Agamas as equally revealed. These primordial hymns are Gods works and
the bedrock of Sanatana Dharma (meaning the eternal Law or Way), the eternal religion. (HAFSite.org)
Within the Hindu scriptures and the nine beliefs, there are six major schools of thought in Hinduism.
Created from theology developed in Hinduism through dynamic traditions of philosophical inquiry and
debate, the school of thought or Darshanas emerged. Darshana literally means seeing; thus one is to
relate to the different ways of seeing the Divine and attain moksha or liberation from the cycle of birth
and rebirth. The six darshanas are 1) Vaisheshika. 2) Nyaya. 3) Sankhya Mimamsa or Purva Mimamsa.
4) Yoga. 5) Vedant, including Advaita, Dvaita and 6) Vishishtadvaita.
Hindus have many holidays and festivals. Holidays are a way of celebrating traditional family
Hinduism and commemorate a particular deity, season or event in history. Hindu holidays dont fall on

the same calendar day each year because the Hindu calendar is lunar. Celebrations are categorized
into three main groups; Deity, Seasonal, and Other Celebration. Deity celebrations include Shivarati,
Ramanavami, Krishna Janmashtami, Ganesha or Vinayaka Chaturti, and Navaratri, which many fasts
and rituals are exclusive to women. Seasonal celebrations pay homage to Goddess Saraswati,
welcoming the arrival of spring known as Holi and is one of the largest festivals in the world. Other
celebrations celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters and the Diwali or Deepavali, which is one
of the most celebrated festivals that commemorates the victory of good over evil.

ACCULTURATION
Starting from the time Hindus immigrated to America there have been many challenges, struggles,
and diversities to overcome. Due to the fact that the Hindus are henotheistic; believing in more than one
God, that Hindus have multiple idols, believe in reincarnation, have a fusion of ideas, and the religion
was not derived from a founder, made it very difficult for native Americans to accept the Hindu religion.
Along with this, their clothing and language, which didnt assimilate into the American culture brought
undue attention. The fear of the native Americans lead to many forms of discrimination from vandalism
and an overall wariness lead to hate crimes. Christians found it very difficult to understand the Hindu
people and religion. Christians through the sixteen and early nineteenth centuries were of the mindset of
privilege, wherefore they didnt have to try and understand the minority religions immigrating into
America or their communities. If anything, Christians really wanted to convert the Hindus to their own
beliefs and assimilate the Hindu people in the established community.
The Hindus also found multiple struggles within blending their families, careers and religion into the
American way of life. Hindus are hard workers and believe in learning English to become one with all.
Hindus have had to work harder to defend their faith and as a result, their faith grew stronger instead of
leaving their home land religion behind. Some believed that the Hindus would not be able to build their
Temples without legal and community issues, but because of the First Amendment Rights stating
Congress shall make no law respecting and establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise
thereof, the Hindu community continued to grow and build temples for worship within their cities.

Contributions from Hinduism, has been a wellspring to America and the globe throughout the years.
Hindus have explored the mysteries of science, mathematics and astronomy to glorify Creation. Hindus
have made important contributions to society within education, mathematics such as quadratic equation
and trigonometry, astronomy, medicine and surgery, literature in Sanskrit, which is most ancient
systematic language in the world. They are most widely know for their contribution in the practice of yoga
an meditation for its salutary effects on personal wellbeing. The most recent societal contribution comes
from of a 25 year project developing the eleven-volume encyclopedias of Hinduism (2013).
(thehindu.com)

In conclusion, Hindus and their religion have become the fastest growing minority religion in the
United States. It is by educating the general public about all the minority religions that can help to break
the cycles of fear, discomfort, and hate among our communities. With the Hindus demographics in
America, their vast yet open beliefs, and their abilities to grow in America is a great example of the First
Amendment by our forefathers and the belief that we can all change to accommodate all religions
without bias.
