While this little jingle might replay over and over in my head, its not
often I would wholeheartedly join in
the It can quit now chorus.
Even in a wet year, when there is
more than enough moisture, I hesitate
to damn the rain because it can shut
off just as quickly as it started. With
so many differing opinions on what
the weather should be, Ive always
thought its a good thing we cant control it, because wed be in a constant
state of chaos.
But can we control the weather?
Just a couple hours up the freeway

weather. They do everything from
cloud seeding or rain enhancement
to hail suppression and fog dispersal.
Theyve worked on weather projects

booming business. Much of the western United States uses these services
for rain enhancement.
Ever the skeptic, I wonder about
the long-term effects of messing
around with the weather. Theres even

We received a beautiful rain Sunday night, and Im always so grateful
when that happens. You can water
or irrigate all you want, but theres
nothing like a nice summer rain to
breathe new life into everything, even
if it wasnt dry before. I love the musty
compost smell of the earth when those

hope it keeps raining until everything
gets a good soaking.
As a farmer it used to annoy me

when it rained just enough to make the
sidewalk wet and non-farmers considered it a great rain. Or when they would
complain about not
having enough rain because their grass was
getting dry. But then
if it rained it might
ruin their weekend.
Peoples livelihoods
were on the line, but
since they didnt walk
in those shoes, I guess by Diane
the disconnect was un- Leukam
derstandable.
You often hear the weather forecasters reassuring their viewers that
they will have a nice dry weekend
so as not to ruin their camping trips or
picnics, and for the most part they are
getting quite accurate. The old-timers

used to determine when to cut hay. I
recently had the pleasure of spending
time with an elderly woman who was
raised on a farm. I asked her how her
dad would decide when he should cut
hay. According to her, he would just
say, Yeah I think well go and cut some
hay down today. Simple enough.
In the absence of the technology
we have now, people used to use folklore and nature to predict the weather.
Youve probably heard a few of these
sayings. It will rain or storm if: a dog
or cat eats grass; theres no dew on the
JUDVVLQWKHPRUQLQJWKHLHVDUHELWing; your bones are aching; or the wind
is from the east.

and believe them to be true. However,
the one predictor that always alerted
me was when the kids and the cows
started acting up. When that barometer started going south, so did their
behavior. I think that goes to show
how much were truly affected by the
weather, since neither kids nor cows
are watching the forecast to clue them
in on whats ahead so they can fake a
response.
If youve been around long
enough, youve no doubt drawn your
own conclusions on various aspects of
the weather. Hot, cold, sunny, cloudy,
wet or dry, one thing is for sure well
always have something to talk about!

Understanding The Hidden Danger Of High Potassium Levels
(NAPSA)One morning in July
2015, Gary Bodenheimer, 69, a
retired behavioral management
teacher, was playing a game of pool
with his buddies at his local senior
center in Elwood, Nebraska, when
he began feeling light-headed,
weak and short of breath. Gary
chalked up the symptoms to his
kidneys, as he suffers from Stage 4
chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Later that day, Gary was
rushed to the emergency department at the local hospital, where
he had blood work done and was
told by the on-call physician that
his potassium was very high
over 7and that he had hyperkalemia. This was the first time I
heard about hyperkalemia, says
Gary. No one had mentioned the
possibility of this happening with
my kidney disease.
Gary was admitted to the hospital and hooked up to a heart
monitor. A few days later, he
asked the physician, Just how
bad was I? and was told, It was
bad. Your heart could have
stopped. Gary was monitored and
treated in the hospital for three
days before being discharged.
Later, he learned from his
nephrologist that the important
medication he was taking to treat
his CKD can cause the side effect
of elevating blood levels of potassium. Unfortunately, this is a
problem patients with CKD may
face that doctors have been challenged with for a long time.
What Is hyperkalemia?
Everyone needs potassium. It
is an important nutrient that
helps keep your heart healthy and
your muscles working properly.
But too much potassium can be
dangerous. Hyperkalemia, which
is believed to affect as many as 3
million people in the United
States, primarily those with CKD,
can have harmful consequences. If
not managed, it can lead to serious heart problems.
The majority of potassium
(98%) is stored inside cells and
released into the bloodstream as
needed. For most people, the level
of potassium in the blood should
be between 3.5 and 5.0. In
healthy people, excess potassium
is primarily excreted through the
kidneys. People with CKD have
decreased kidney function, so this
process can become compromised,
putting them at risk for hyperkalemia. In addition, as Gary
experienced, certain medications
that are often prescribed to peo-
ple with CKD to help delay the

progression of their underlying
disease, can cause hyperkalemia
as a side effect.
Who Is At Risk?
You may be at risk for hyperkalemia if you:
Have kidney disease.
Have advanced kidney disease
and eat a diet high in potassium.
Take certain drugs that prevent the kidneys from losing
enough potassium, causing your
potassium levels to rise. These
include renin angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors,
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
drugs (NSAIDS), and beta blockers. Discuss all medicines that
you take with your doctor. Do not
stop taking any medicines on your
own.
Take extra potassium, such
as certain salt substitutes or
supplements.
Have Addisons disease, a
disorder that can occur if your
body does not make enough of certain hormones.
Have poorly controlled diabetes.
Experience a serious injury
or severe burn.
What Are The Symptoms?
Many people with high potassium have few, if any, symptoms.
If symptoms do appear, they are
usually mild and non-specific, and
can include muscle weakness,
numbness, tingling, nausea, or
other unusual feelings. Because of
this, many CKD patientslike

potassium levels are elevated.
How Is It Diagnosed?
High potassium usually develops slowly over many weeks or
months, and it can recur. A simple
blood test can determine the level

Thrush, a bacterial infection,
can be a common problem that
resides in the frog of a horses
hoof. The frog refers to the darkcolored soft tissue on the bottom
side of the foot that is triangular
in shape, and stretches from a
horses heel to midway toward the
toe. The bacteria that causes
thrush thrives in unsanitary conditions like stalls, where dirt,
debris and bacteria can get
trapped in horses feet. The preliminary sign of the condition is a
strong odor coming from the hoof.
Three Steps to
Healthier Hooves
There are several tips and
strategies to manage and prevent
thrush. Keeping the hoof and frog
clean and free of bacteria is important, and this can be challenging
in a barn environment that is
often wet and full of bacteria.

three tips:
1. Clean the hooves daily with
a hoof pick and clean wire brush;
the pick removes the bulk and the
wire brush removes residue.
2. Trim hooves on a regular
schedule. Feet that go untrimmed

white line, making it easier for
bacteria to enter the hoof capsule.
3. Ask a farrier to use pourin pads that adhere to the bottom
of the foot to seal out moisture

Floerkes build home using farm elements

and Bob Floerke sit in the porch of their
home west of Round Prairie, it seems
like theyve been there forever. There
is the farm where Janna grew up, the
place they visited for the 38 years they
lived in Inver Grove Heights and now,
the place they call home.
Having bought the 140-acre property from her mother 11 years ago, the
Floerkes have worked on every building
on the property.
Everything you see here has always been here, Janna said.
Everything, that is, except the home
they started building last summer and
DUHQRZQLVKLQJWKHSURFHVVRIPRYLQJ

Now were just waiting for the
grass to grow, Bob said.
+DYLQJQDOO\JRWWHQWKHRSSRUWXQLty to move back to the country has been
a long-awaited dream. And for them,
having lived in the Cities for so long, it
was important that the home they built
be all country.
Ironically, their favorite part of the
home, the porch, was not even in the
plans but developed later. Originally, it was to be an open, outdoor space
covered with a roof. Now its a weather-proof, screened-in space they can enMR\DOO\HDU$QGLWLVFRXQWU\IURPRRU
WRFHLOLQJ7KHRRULVVWDPSHGFRQFUHWH
with the look of wood planking. The
lower walls are cement board and the
upper walls, bead board. But perhaps
the most country feature in the porch
is the metal ceiling made from grain bin
steel.
When the idea came up, I thought
it was a little weird, but it grew on me,
said Janna.
Now its one of their favorite feaWXUHV$QRWKHULVWKHWKLQH[LEOHZLQdows that move up and down, with
sections that slide together, creating an
open, airy feeling of being outside. Gracing the porch is a wooden rocking chair
that belonged to Bobs great-grandmother. The chair is guessed to be over
140 years old, has been passed through
the generations and is nearly identical to
one that used to sit on Jannas mothers
porch.
,QVLGH WKH KRPH D HOGVWRQH UHplace makes a cozy addition to the livingroom, while in the kitchen, cabinets
are made of a combination of rustic
birch and oak, similar to many trees on
the property. A pantry is complete with
a sliding barn door, one of two such
doors handcrafted by Bob with wood
from neighbors barns.
Bob explained how he left the imperfections of the wood as they were,
even inserting rusted nails into holes left
by previous nails.
The whole process of building their
home has been one they enjoyed, and
one favorite memory of that time illustrates the peace and serenity that surrounds them. One day while they were
sitting outside having lunch with the
crew that built the home, they thought
they heard a train. They dismissed it,
thinking there were none around. The
next day they heard the same sound at
the same time. It turns out it was a train
by Alexandria, some 25 miles away.
The quiet is just one thing the Floerkes enjoy, but there are other reasons

Weve been deer hunting here since
we were married in 1976, she said.
These days she has a new deer stand
with windows and a heater, a request she
made when the cold started getting to
her.
I threatened to quit so Bob built me
a new one, Janna said.
The new stand comes in handy as
Jana takes their young granddaughter
out hunting with her. The Floerkes have
one son, two daughters, and three grandchildren all who live near each other in
the Twin Cities area.
Being able to see 500 yards out their
windows is something that wouldnt
have been possible a few years ago. An
aerial photo of the farm shows several groves of trees near where the house
now stands.

I miss the woods, said Janna, who
remembers them from childhood on.
The daughter of Floyd and Marge
Anderson, who purchased the land in
1941, Janna helped her parents on the
farm from a young age.
I just loved everything about the
farm, said Janna.
After her dad passed away 30 years
ago, her mother stayed on the farm.
When people tried to convince
Marge to move into town, she said, I
can look out the window and see a baby
fawn almost any morning [in the spring].
