Introduction
The CAlifornium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) to the
Argonne Tandem-Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS) represents a
highly novel approach to producing radioactive ion beams (RIBs) for
nuclear physics studies. There are currently only two RIB facilities in
the US. When completed, CARIBU will provide many exciting new
opportunities to extend basic science knowledge as well as yielding
valuable data for applications. This poster provides a brief overview
of the physics goals for the facility, the suite of experimental
apparatus, and current status.

High Resolution Compact Isobar Separator

Scientific Motivation
How were the neutron-rich heavy elements created?
What exotic shapes do nuclei exhibit as neutrons are added?
Do magic numbers stay magic as you keep adding neutrons?
How many neutrons can you add to a nucleus?
How can we make better predictions of nuclear properties?
Measurements for nuclear reactor applications. And more ...

The high resolution compact isobar separator purifies the beam

and isolates one nucleus from sea of contaminant nuclei.

252Cf Fission Source and Gas Cell

The heart of CARIBU is the 252Cf spontaneous fission source

and gas cell, or gas catcher.

Cf fission source sits inside Helium gas cell.

Neutron-rich fission fragments are quickly thermalized.
Momentum and charge state distributions are dramatically collapsed into a
low-emittance beam.

The RFQ buncher/cooler takes continuous beam at 50 keV and

creates pulsed$%$
beam at 1.5 keV useful for:

All critical components on the CARIBU platform operational.

First radioactive beams sent through the whole ATLAS accelerator system.
First Penning trap mass measurements of neutron-rich Cs isotopes.
Mass resolution of isobar separator needs to be improved.
Purification of Helium in gas cell needs to be improved.
Better beam diagnostics are required all along the beam paths.
