    Abstract
    OBJECTIVES: Temporalarterybiopsy(TAB)isrequestedinanattempttoconfirmthediagnosisof
    temporalarteritis(TA).PatientssymptomsandsignsarehighlyvariableandTAisoftenfocaland
    potentiallymissedinasmallbiopsy.ThestudyaimedtodetermineifTABhelpsinthemanagementof
    patientswithsuspectedTA.
    METHODS: Thecaserecordsofsixtysixconsecutivepatientswhohadundergonetemporalartery
    biopsywererecalledandexaminedforpresentingsymptoms,management,therapy,resultsand
    outcome.
    RESULTS: Therewere23menand43womenwithameanageof70.2and71.1yearsrespectively.
    Presentingsymptomsvariedwithunilateralheadachein53,scalptendernessin16,muscleweaknessin
    10,visualdisturbancein16,jawclaudicationin5andperiorbitalpainin1patient.Thetemporalartery
    wastenderin21patientsandthickenedin4patients.Thirtyeightpatientswerecommencedonsteroids
    priortobiopsyand6morebeforethehistologybecameavailable.Only8%ofbiopsieswerepositivefor
    TA.Ofthepatientsstartedonsteroidswithanegativebiopsy,thesteroidswerecontinuedin26and
    stoppedin9.Inthepatientsnotputonsteroids[22],biopsywaspositivein2theywerecommencedon
    steroids.Therefore,thehistologicaldiagnosisresultedinachangeinpatientmanagementinonly18%
    ofpatients.
    CONCLUSION: TheresultsofTABdonotappeartoaffecttheclinicalmanagementofmostpatientswith
    suspectedtemporalarteritis.Wemustthereforequestiontheroutineuseofthisinvasiveinvestigation.
