(Heb.

11:4)

John Calvin
Died
27th May 1564

 Whatever a person may be like, we must still love them because

we love God.

 There is not one blade of grass; there is no colour in this world

that is not intended to make us rejoice.

 If the life of the body ought to be so precious to us that we would

do all in our power to preserve it, of how much more importance is
the life of the soul!

 Is it faith to understand nothing, and merely submit your

convictions implicitly to the Church?

 No man is excluded from calling upon God; gate of salvation is set

open unto to all: neither is there any other thing which keepeth us
back from entering in, save only our own unbelief.

 Assuredly there is but one way in which to achieve what is not

merely difficult but utterly against human nature: to love those
who hate us, to repay their evil deeds with benefits, to return
blessings for reproaches. It is that we remember not to consider
men's evil intention but to look upon the image of God in them,
which cancels and effaces their transgressions, and with its
beauty and dignity allures us to love and embrace them.

 The Scriptures are like spectacles – they put things in focus. Take
them off and you see all things obscurely put them on and you will
SEE.

 Christ's servants are bound yet free! True Christian freedom is a

free servitude and a serving freedom.

 It is better to crawl in the right direction than to run madly in the

wrong one.

 The necessity and utility of this exercise of prayer no words can

sufficiently express.

 We do not come to listen to preaching merely to hear what we do

not know, but to be incited to do our duty.

 The principle work of the Spirit is Faith and the principle exercise
of Faith is Prayer.

 A dog barks when his master is attacked. I would be a coward if I

saw that God's truth is attacked and yet would remain silent.

 Faith consists, not in ignorance, but in knowledge, and that, not

only of God, but also of the divine will.

 If we want to worship God in accordance with our own ideas, and

not according to God’s will, it will simply be abuse and corruption.
 True worship is an act of obedience to God, who commands us to
have no other gods before Him.

 The whole of the Christian life is an act of repentance.

 It is not left to every man to frame a system of religion according to

his own judgment, but the standard of godliness is to be taken
from the Word of God.

 I must hold the things of eternity constantly in focus. For when

there is no promise of eternal inheritance implanted in our hearts
we shall never be torn away from the world.

 Build a man a fire and he will be warm for a day; set him on fire
and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

 Religion is the reaction of the human soul to what it perceives God

to be.

 True religion is the fellowship between God and man. The part of
the fellowship that moves from God towards man is Revelation.
The part that moves from man to God, which involves man’s
obedient response, is piety.

 Let the first rule of right prayer then be, to have our heart and
mind framed as becomes those who are entering into converse
with God.

 We are not our own;

Therefore neither our reason nor will is to rule our actions and
counsels.
We are not our own;
Therefore let us not make it our end to seek what may be agreeable to
our carnal nature.
We are not our own;
Therefore, as far as possible, let us forget ourselves and the things that
are ours.
On the other hand,
We are God’s;
Let us therefore live and die to Him.
We are God’s;
Therefore let His wisdom and will preside over all our actions.
We are God’s;
To Him, then, as the only legitimate end, let every part of our life be
directed.
