This is in reference to Dr. Diptarka Bhattacharyyas application to your institute. I
have supervised Dr. Bhattacharyya for a period of 3 years from May 2012-may 2015
during his residency at the T.N Medical College & B.Y.L Nair Charitable
Hospital , Mumbai. I have also been his research guide and mentor during this
period.
At this institute there is a long standing history of providing compassionate and
quality care to the poorest patients of India whom we mainly cater to. Dr.
Bhattacharyya demonstrated these qualities from the earliest days of his training
,always treating patients with respect ,empathy and compassion even during the
rush of the busiest OPD hours . I have also found him to be respectful and polite to
his teachers, colleagues and the staff nurses and other paramedical workers. He has
gained the respect and love of workers at every level of this institute by his humility
, politeness & willingness to help anyone in need.
Another of his strongest qualities is his willingness to learn and share knowledge
and also in the ability to apply the same to patient care. Both in the Operation
Theatre and during ward rounds he would be well read and prepared about the
cases & when I have asked the residents to read up a topic , he would always be
eager to do it and report back to me to advise him on further reading material. He
has always willingly volunteered for any research which I have put him on , and
provided valuable help in the revision of the new edition of my textbook An Atlas
Of Operative Otolaryngology by Jaypee pvt. Ltd.
His exceptional organizational capabilities are exemplified by the fact that during his
senior year, he has been the Resident in charge of our Cochlear implant
programme, our Advanced Endonasal Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery
Programme & our Otolaryngologic Endocrinology patients and handled all of
them impeccably. He also designed a post operative monitoring chart for post-total
thyroidectomy patients which is used in our dept. even now.
He has always been an ardent student and a willing teacher. From under-graduate
students to his juniors , his willingness to teach endeared him to all. He has often
pleasantly surprised me by knowing recent protocols /treatment updates & stays up
to date with relevant medical research.
In the Operation Theatre he would approach patients methodically & efficiently. He
has performed a wide variety of otolaryngologic procedures admirably and has
developed a meticulous surgical technique with close attention to details . His
interaction with patients and their relatives has been professional and yet soothing.

He would always observe any procedures being performed by his seniors closely
and would assist efficiently even in complex cases like laryngo-tracheal
reconstructions and facial reconstruction procedures.
He has completed two observership programs in head and neck oncology and
audiology and speech therapy during his residency period and has been regular
, professional and dedicated in both instances. He has also attended multiple
workshops and presented papers , posters and videos in many of them . He is a
confident and articulate speaker and has co-ordinated multiple events flawlessly.
His academic performance in the Otolaryngology Final Exams ,Summer 2015 have
been expectedly outstanding having Secured University First Rank And Overall State
Highest in the state of Maharashtra. He is extremely interested in acquiring further
Sub-Speciality training in his field and is committed to bringing the highest standard
of patient care within the reach of the not-so-affording Indian patient. His USMLE
Scores (Step 1 being 255 and Step 2 ck being 263) though not being unexpected
further convinced me of his adaptability &ability to excel in different patterns of
health care and examinations that exist in different nations.
I , truly believe that Dr. Bhattacharyya is an exceptional student and individual. With
the right support I believe he has much to contribute to our society. He has much to
give to any institution he works at , and with his pleasant and
engaging
personality , I am sure he will bring a fresh and different perspective to his
department , enriching both himself and others in the process.
