osh,

thought these things happened only in the

movies.

But there they were, Robert and Hilda, madly in

love with each other.
Let me describe them to you.
Robert is a 6 foot 1 inch tall, 25-year-old handsome American

G.I.
Hilda, on the other hand, is a 42-year-old Filipina prostitute
who has 2 kids from different fathers. And Im no great beauty
expert, but if you trust my judgment, let me be honest with you:
She was not attractive. (And Im being generous when I say
that.)
So why were they together?
Let me tell you how their love story began
One day, Robert, who was assigned in Subic Naval Base, took
a walk in the streets of Olongapo City. As background, Robert
was a God-fearing man who read his Bible every day and enjoyed
a strong relationship with Jesus.
As he was strolling in one of the alleys, he saw the open door
of a small house. From the doorway, he saw a woman praying in
front of an altar.
He didnt know why, but he just couldnt stop watching the
scene in front of him. And in minutes, Robert began to cry.
The woman he saw was Hilda.
He didnt know this, but Hilda was a prostitute. She has
been selling her body for money for many, many years. Her two
children come from two Filipino fathers.
But on that fateful day, she was filled with anguish.
For the longest time, she had wanted to quit her profession.
But she was torn. It was either that or starvation for her kids. So
she knelt down in front of the altar, crying out to God to rescue
her.

She asked Him, Lord, I want out. I dont want to do this

job anymore. Please give me a husband who will take care of
me and my two kids. And if possible Lord, she added, I hope
my husband will be an American.
(When I heard her tell me this story, I had to put my hand
over my mouth to stop myself from saying, Youve got guts,
sister!)
But as she was praying that prayer, Robert walked into
her life. He knocked on her open door, introduced himself and
they began to talk. It was the start of the courtship. After a few
months of friendship, Robert planted one knee on the ground
and asked her, Will you marry me? And Hilda, with tears
streaming down her cheeks, could only say, Yes!
I was giving a Life in the Spirit Seminar when I met the
couple. In two days, Im bringing my fianc and her kids to
Hawaii to introduce them to my parents, Robert told me with
a big smile.
Wow, God bless you, brother, I said sincerely.
I was just imagining the scene, Hi Mom, Hi Dad, Robert
would say, This is Hilda, a 42-year-old prostitute with two
kids from two different fathers. Were getting married next
week. Man, Id love to be there just to watch the faces of his
parents.
Some will say, Hilda doesnt deserve Robert!
But isnt that true of life in general? We dont deserve all
the blessings we receive. Were not worthy. But what do we do
with a God that blesses us recklessly?
Like Hilda, with tears streaming down your cheeks, all
you can say is, Yes!

Just Say
YES to

reetings of peace!

Back in the Philippines, I remember KERYGMA

magazine as one media that had great impact
on all its readers. It is full of wisdom, Spiritfilled and Christ-like that you would aspire
to resemble the character that it reflects.
When my wife and I migrated to the U.S., we were just
awed at how God brought us here. We also continue
to marvel at how KERYGMA and being an online
member of KerygmaFamily has blessed us with just a
click of a mouse. It seemed like we never left home. It
is comforting to know that even with the fast-paced
life here in the U.S., we are privileged that we can
sit down, relax and be nourished by Gods presence
through your magazine.
The way you have refreshed millions through your
teachings may never be accounted for in detail. But as
one of the millions, I would just like to honor God by
honoring all the staff of your powerful magazine who
continue to be treasured vessels that God uses for His
greater glory.
God bless the work of your hands tremendously!

ast Christmas 2004, my husband

and I received a precious gift from
Bro. Raph and Sis. Herci, our caring
group heads in the Fairview Chapter
of the Light of Jesus community. It was
a 6-month subscription of Kerygma
magazine. We were truly blessed to
receive this gift because Kerygma has
nurtured me spiritually and helped me
get to know God more. Reading the
magazine also enriched my relationships
with my family, friends and co-workers.
Once our free subscription has lapsed,
we will continue subscribing to
Kerygma. I usually read the magazine
with much enthusiasm. I can easily
relate with most of the stories and
testimonies shared by ordinary people
like me. Kerygma has definitely touched
my life beautifully.

What I mean is, literally, settling down. Ive always thought that settling down was a

the
negative term for tying the knot. No, I will not settle! was my battle cry.
singsonWhen you say settle, you mean youre agreeing to something or someone thats less than

satisfactory. At least thats how Webster defined it. And I wasnt about to do that. I wanted no less than
what I hoped for.
But far from the storybook proposal I dreamed of, heres how my story actually went
The pamanhikan that betrothed me to Chris Kawpeng was a simple affair. Chris came with his
mom, his eldest brother, his sister-in-law. My three sisters plus their
husbands were present too.
When the lunch was coming to an end, Chris quietly mentioned
to my dad that he had already reserved the church and Wack Wack
Country Club for July 15. My dad joked, Ha? Bakit? Ano bang
meron? By then, everyones attention was on them. We laughed and
Chris stammered and his brother interrupted, Ah kala ko birthday
ni Rissa kaya tayo nandito! And everyone ganged up on Chris with
other similar comments. By then, Chris was as red as a tomato!
After the word wedding was finally out, one of my sisters,
joked, So, how many cows will you give in exchange for our sister?
And Chriss brother said to him, OK, I give you permission to open the freezer and bring out meat.
Putol-putol nga lang. As long as they could complete one animal four lamb legs,
ribeye, tenderloin, a head of a chicken the wedding was on. And we were all just
laughing. Meanwhile, the color on Chriss face still hadnt subsided.
By the way, Chris unceremoniously slipped me an engagement ring before the lunch
started. He had planned
to give it to me earlier so
Far from the negative connotation it

checked the box to find that
he had forgotten to put the ring in it! So when I opened the door, he just handed me the box.
Ring to follow, he said sheepishly.
At my Dads house, he slipped the ring onto my finger and said, There, wear that in
case they look for a ring. But youll return that to me, OK?
He didnt get the ring back after the pamanhikan so I guess that made the engagement
official.
Through the months that we prepared for the wedding, the real meaning of settling
down slowly dawned upon me.
It meant not getting our top choice of design for the wedding rings because someone
had already bought bands for us.
It meant scrimping on other expenses for the wedding so we could channel our savings
to our future home.
It meant giving in to many things that the other one wanted simply because we love

tips for personal development

No One Is beyond
Forgiveness
The Risen Christ gave the apostles
and their successors the power to
forgive sins when He gave them the
Holy Spirit. Baptism is the first and
chief sacrament of forgiveness since
it unites us with Christ. The other
means to forgive sins is through the
Sacrament of Penance.

Because we have so many choices nowadays, we look down on

the common, and seemingly lowly, water. But our bodies need
water second only to air. Here are some guidelines on staying
healthy with water:
1. Proper Hydration. Most of us need at least six to
eight-ounce glasses of good, clean drinking water daily.
Coffee, alcohol, softdrinks and other sugary beverages
do not count in that daily total. Water not only supports
our immune system, it also flushes toxins from the lymph
system and the body.
2. Water Balance and Diet. We need varying amounts
of water depending on our body size, level of physical
activity, exercise and sweating, the local climate, and
our diet. If you eat a diet that is dry and high in protein
and fat, you need to drink even more water to flush these
foods healthfully through your system.
3. Prevent Dehydration. At even one percent
dehydration, most people get thirsty, which is your
bodys warning sign. It can cause dry mouth, flushed
skin, fatigue, lightheadedness, headache, or impaired
physical performance, as well as lapses in concentration.
More chronic dehydration causes constipation and poor
digestive function, dry and itchy skin, a reduction of
urine output, and even an increased incidence of kidney
stones.
4. Best Time to Drink. You should drink two or three
glasses of water first thing in the morning. Dont drink
too much water while eating since increased fluids dilute
the strength of digestive juices and lower the efficiency of
digestion and assimilation.
5. Losing Weight. Drinking two glasses of water about
30 minutes before meals will hydrate tissues, calm
the appetite and likely lower the amount of food you
consume.

Your Kids to
Save Money

inances

{ } KerygmaSep2007

If you rue the fact that you didnt learn how to save when you were much younger,
then youd better remedy that situation by teaching your kids how to save money
while theyre still young. Here are some tips to help you along the way:
Improve Yourself. How can you expect your child to believe you if your
financial condition is in shambles? Study personal finance and make
sure to get your familys finances in order.
Communicate with Your Child. Talk to your kids regularly about money
and involve them in money-related activities such as counting, sorting,
shopping, banking and bills-paying.
Board Games and Cash Registers. There are board games about
money specifically made for children such as Cashflow for Kids,
Monopoly (Junior), Moneywise Kids, etc. Choose what you think will suit
your needs.
Lists and Shopping. Shopping will help your kids learn about budgeting.
Let them compare items in a grocery store. Point out differences in
pricing between generic and name brands. Teach them to differentiate
your familys needs and wants.
Allowance. Give your kids a chance to manage their own money
through their allowance. Give them suggestions and support them, but
allow them also to make their own mistakes.

Family Fun on a
Budget
We sometimes think that spending time together as a
family and having fun would entail large expenses. But
it need not be so. Here are some fun ways to spend time
with your loved ones on a budget.

QUICK HEALTH TIP. Canned tuna can be

a good source of omega 3, which helps
lower the risk of diabetes and obesity.
Choose water-packed rather than oilpacked tuna to get the most omega 3 fats.

Source: www.rd.com/

www.whfoods.com

Dine In. Once in a while, set your table as if

guests were coming and treat your children
like honored guests. Use special glasses, light
candles, play music in the background and
encourage the family to dress up.
Outdoor Picnics. When youre at a park or
an amusement center, pack a lunch instead
of buying food from outside. Include a treat
or two so your kids will feel that the lunch is
special.
Indoor Picnic Surprise. When storm or rain
forces you to stay inside, surprise your kids with
an indoor picnic. Spread a tablecloth or old
bedspread on the floor, serve food on picnic
plates. You can also add houseplants around
the cloth to create an outdoorsy atmosphere.
Cheap Movies. Instead of going out to see a
movie which would cost a lot, just rent a video
and watch it at home. Prepare popcorn, turn
out the lights, and choose a film that the whole
family can enjoy.

Treat Your Pores Right

eauty

When you dont treat your pores right, they become clogged and enlarged. Coupled with dry skin,
pores can look worse than they actually are. Here are some tips to handle your pore problems:

Grainy Stuff. Grainy, exfoliating cleansers help your pores polish off dry, dead skin cells that
clog your skin. Be gentle when you use them though, and use them just once in a while.
Facials. Facials help to remove nasty blackheads and give a thorough, deep-pore cleansing.
Make sure that you speak to a facialist so you can discuss your needs and concerns before
the service.
Microdermabrasion. This lessens the appearance of pores by roughening up the skin,
loosening the dead skin that clogs pores. It also stimulates collagen to make the skin look
really smooth. There are at-home products or medical professionals who do this service.
Neutral Blotting Powder. Avoid applying foundation to any enlarged pores. Instead, apply
a neutral blotting powder. The powder will serve to diffuse the look of the pores so all youll
see is a smooth, matted surface.
Pore-Perfecting Cream. Look for gels and tinted creams that are formulated to smoothen
the appearances of pores. Put the product directly on areas that are bothering you. Let it set
then lightly apply powder on it.

dear
K

Ive been into this guy for more than a

year now, and I cant let go. Even though
he has told me that he doesnt love me
and that he is reconciling with his exgirlfriend, I still hold on to false hope.
That is because he continues to send me
sweet text messages. Whenever I read
his messages, I get carried away by my
emotions.

When I asked him if he still
wanted me, he said no. But when I asked
him why he still keeps in touch, he said
that communicating with me made him
happy. Im a victim of his moods. He
knows how much I love him and how
scared I am of losing him. Im now out
of the country and working abroad so
that I could get over him. Unfortunately,
I still miss him when I dont receive his
messages. I feel like Im being tortured.
I tried to cut our communication but I
ended up texting and calling him up. He
told me that he only wants to save our
friendship. My work is at risk because I
cant concentrate on my task. I cry every
night. I dont know what to do. Please
help me.

Dear Moka,

My heart goes out to you. From your letter I can glean how you are
aching and how much you still love your ex- boyfriend. Allow me,
though, to help you open your eyes to certain things that your emotions
seem to have blinded you to:

1. He has told you that he doesnt love you and that he is

reconciling with his ex-girlfriend; and
2. He said no when you asked him if he still wanted you.

Be thankful that your ex-boyfriend is honest enough to tell you where

things stand with him. He hasnt given you any false hopes and has flatly
said that he doesnt want you anymore. Take it from there. You have
to steel yourself away
from him and end all
communications with
him, stop being a
victim of his moods.
Move on, he is not the
only guy around.

It is very providential
that you are currently working abroad and are physically away from
him. Take this opportunity to start anew.Do not mope; make yourself
more attractive. Broaden your circle of friends and let them know you
are available (I suggest you get hold of Bos book How To Find Your
One True Love). Involve yourself in church, sports or other activities
that will keep you busyand will not afford you time to think about your
ex.

Most importantly, focus your eyes on God. Pray, pray, pray. Only God
can heal our hurts. Surrender everything to Him and let Him carry the
load on your shoulders. It will take time but just, Let go and let God.

God bless,
Reng Morelos

Dear yoj_vil,

I would like to ask about my experience during a healing

Mass. Two weeks ago, I attended a healing Mass which
was conducted by a Charismatic community. Im also a
member of another Charismatic community. During the
healing session, I was slain by the Holy Spirit.

My question is this: Why did it take some time
before I regained consciousness when all the others
already had? I felt cold and then I raised my hands to
touch my face. What could that action mean? Then the
head servant of the community prayed over me and I
woke up soon after he said his prayer. It was so amazing.
I was embarrassed to share what I experienced but the
head servant said there was someone who experienced
climbing with Jesus.

Could it be me he was referring to?

yoj_vil

What Does It
Mean to Be
Slain by the
Spirit?

The term slain in the Spirit has never been properly defined but
judging from the context of your letter, what we are referring to here
is that experience whereby a person, in this case you, rests in the
Spirit as a result or in response to opening ones self up for prayer at
a particular time. I would prefer to reserve in final judgment on your
experience until I have more details but I will say the following.
Exactly what happens here physiologically or spiritually we do not
really know. There are some authorities in the Church who strongly
discourage this sort of experience precisely because there can be a lot
of ambiguity in the experience. People also often fake the experience
to make it look as though they have had a spiritual experience.
I personally believe that it can be an authentic manifestation of the Holy
Spirit working in an individuals life. Exactly what the Spirit is doing is
always shrouded in mystery and depends a lot on the context and
the spirituality of the individual involved. Quite often, the experience
is accompanied by hot or cold flushes or a tingling sensation among
others. I have seen people slain or resting in the Spirit for hours. I
have also seen people undergo that experience in the middle of a talk
or even while eating a meal. It really is a thing where the Spirit is in
control, if we let Him do what He wants with us.
Suffice it to say, I think the best thing for you to do is ask yourself
whether or not you believe your experience was authentic or you
were pressured into it by people or your surroundings. Given that it
is authentic, simply trust that the Lord was doing something to heal
you or strengthen your faith or was addressing another aspect of your
spiritual life. Thank Him for His goodness and pray for the grace to be
faithful to the work He has begun in you.
I hope this helps.

Sugar Batteries to Fuel

Cellphones
Sugar batteries for your cell phone? Thats not such
a far-fetched idea. Shelley Minteer, an electrochemist at
Saint Louis University in the U.S., is actually developing
one together with other researchers.
Using sugar for fuel is not a new concept, but
scientists only recently have learned how to produce
electricity from sugar. In this case, the cell operates at
room temperature and uses enzymes to oxidize sugars,
thus generating electricity. So far, the researchers
have run the sugar battery on glucose, flat soft drinks,
sweetened drink mixes and tree sap.
This study shows that renewable fuels can be
directly employed in batteries at room temperature to
lead to more energy-efficient battery technology than
metal-based approaches, said Minteer.
The new technology is expected to power
portable electronics like cellular phones, laptops and

commercialization and is expected to reach the market
in three to five years.

Where do unbaptized babies go? Heres good news

on that one. After several years of study, the Vaticans
International Theological Commission said in a recently
released document that the traditional concept of limbo
a place where unbaptized infants spend eternity without
communion with God seemed to reflect an unduly
restrictive view of salvation.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states simply
that unbaptized infants are entrusted to Gods mercy. But
limbo has long been regarded as the common teaching
of the church since the 13th century. Its the place where
unbaptized infants go when they die, where babies are
deprived of the vision of God but do not suffer because
the babies dont know what they are deprived of.
Our conclusion is that the many factors that we
have consideredgive serious theological and liturgical
grounds for hope that unbaptized infants who die will be
saved and enjoy the beatific vision, the document said.
The 30-member International Theological Commission
acts as an advisory panel to the Vatican, in particular to
the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Though its
documents are not considered expressions of authoritative
church teaching, they sometimes set the stage for official
Vatican pronouncements. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now
Pope Benedict, was president of the commission when it
began studying the concept of limbo in a systematic way
in 2004.

Vegetables are good for everyone kids and adults

alike. A trio of new studies presented at the annual meeting
of the American Association for Cancer Research found that
vegetables and fruits help lower your chances of getting
various kinds of cancers.
The first study, authored by Neal Freedman of the
National Cancer Institute, compared the incidence of head
and neck cancer in 490,802 adults. He found out that those
who consumed the most fruits and vegetables had the lowest
risk for head and neck cancers. Vegetables appeared to offer
more cancer prevention than fruits alone did.
The second study was conducted by researchers at the
University of California, Los Angeles. They discovered that
broccoli and soy protein, which form a compound called

diindolylmethane (DIM) when consumed together, could help keep

breast and ovarian cancers from spreading.
The third study looked at the diets of 183,519 people from California
and Hawaii, and compared their intake of flavonols with their risk of
pancreatic cancer. Flavonols are protective compounds found in some
fruits and vegetables like onions, apples, berries and broccoli. Those
who had the highest consumption of flavonols reduced their risk of
pancreatic cancer by 23 percent.
These studies give lots more ammo to what weve been saying
eating a large variety of plant-based foods is one of the best things
you can do for your health in terms of cancer prevention, said Melanie
Polk, the nutrition education adviser for the American Institute for
Cancer Research.

More People Have High

Blood Pressure
If you think all the stress at work, at home, and on the street
might give you high blood pressure, youre correct. A study
conducted by a team of international experts said that one
in four adults has high blood pressure and that if nothing is
done, that figure could rise by 60 percent over 20 years. The
report said that high blood pressure is growing most rapidly
in emerging countries with westernized economies, such as
Brazil, China, India, Russia, Turkey and the Central European
states.
Researcher Dr. Panos Kanavos of the London School of
Economics said it was wrong to think that high blood pressure
only affected older people. Uncontrolled high blood pressure
among people in their 30s, 40s and 50s will inevitably lead to
an increase in cardiovascular disease and strike down men
and women at the height of their earning power, potentially
turning them from drivers of economic growth and sources
of public revenues to long-term recipients of extensive social
benefits with increased healthcare needs.
The researchers say much work is needed to tackle high
blood pressure not the least a switch to healthier, less
hectic lifestyles.

little boy strutted through the backyard, wearing a baseball

cap and toting a ball and bat.

Im the greatest hitter in the

world, he said to himself. Then, he tossed the ball into the air,
swung at it with his bat and missed. Strike one! he yelled.
Undaunted, he picked up the ball and said again, Im the greatest hitter
in the world! He tossed the ball into the air. When it came down, he swung
and missed a second time. Strike two! he cried.
The boy paused and looked at his bat and ball carefully. He straightened
his cap and said once more, Im the greatest hitter in the world! Again he
tossed the ball into the air and swung at it. He missed. He shouted, Strike
three!
Wow! he exclaimed. Im the greatest pitcher in the world!
People who look at the bright and positive things in life will have a
healthier body. But those who look at the bad and negative side of life wont
last very long.
So, which one are you optimist or pessimist? Your answer will determine
the state of your physical and spiritual being.
Lets find out why.

YOU ARE GODS HOUSE

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, Do you not know that your body is a temple
of the Holy Spirit, who is in youYou are not your own; you were bought
with a price. Therefore honor your God with your body.
Your body is Gods temple, His dwelling place.
Your body is Gods house.
Thats why the devil tempts you to indulge in vices because your body is
sacred.
Thats the reason why the devil wants you to pollute the air so that you
can destroy the other temples out there.
Remember, you only have one body! You can replace your car. You can
change your cell phone.
But you cannot replace your body.
Some people dont like their bodies. They face the mirror and they say,
Ewww! They look at themselves and say, Why am I like this?
When you dont like your body, your body responds in the same way.
Thats why you get sick.
People who dont like their bodies unconsciously think, My body
deserves to be sick. And because they hate their bodies, they become sickly.
They think thats what they deserve.
When you dont like your body, your body responds in hatred as well.
You cannot hate your body because it is the dwelling place of the Lord, of
the Alpha and the Omega, of the First and the Last. God resides in you.
THE LAWS OF WELLNESS
Youre just right. Youre Gods house. You cannot, in any way, despise your
body. God says, I live in you. He teaches us in Sirach 4:14-15, It is better to be
poor, but strong and healthy, than to be rich but poor in health. A sound, healthy
body and a cheerful attitude are more valuable than gold or jewels.
Why do you think the Lord talks about a healthy body and a cheerful
attitude together in this verse?
The book of Sirach and the Bible was written over 2,500 years ago. Psychology
hasnt been established as the science of the mind and behavior back then. But
the Bible already spoke about the connection of the body, mind and emotions.
And from this basic truth came the laws of wellness that govern your
health.

1. The Law of Personal Responsibility

If its going to be, its up to me. Robert Schuller
Youve got to be personally responsible for
your health. God says that you are to take care of
His temple. You have control over your health and
over your body more than you think. But not all.
You have no control over 10 percent of your body
and health, that is your genes, your DNA, what
allergies you are prone to. But 90 percent of your
physical health is under your control.
A six-year-old boy named Timothy had 12
personalities. In one personality, he had diabetes
he was insulin-deficient. In other personalities,
his body produced insulin. In another personality,
Timothy was allergic to orange juice and he would
break into hives. But that happened only in one
personality.
Just as Timothy chose his diseases, his allergies,
we also choose our diseases by our vices, our
thoughts, our feelings; by the way we live and the
way we deal with stress.
And if you think about it, its really up to you.
In 1 Corinthians 10:31 it says, Whatever you eat,
or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory
of God.
Is there anything in your life that cannot be
done for the glory of God?
To all you smokers out there can you actually
say that you smoke for the glory of God? If youre
not able to claim, Im lighting up this Marlboro for
the glory of God, then please stop doing it.
Because everything that you do should be
done for His glory. Because youre His temple. God
dwells within you. And you need to give Him glory
whatever you do.
2. The Law of Unity
The part can never be well unless the whole is
well. - Plato
There is an Indian saying that goes this way:
If you want to know what you thought yesterday,
look at your body today. If you want to know what
your body will look like tomorrow, look at your
thoughts today.
This tells you about the indelible connection
between your mind and your body, between your
emotions and your body, between your spirit and
your body. There is. Theyre one, not separate.
And whatevers happening in your mind,
your spirit, your soul, or your emotions, you see
the manifestation in your body. Your body is the

{ 14 } KerygmaSep2007

blueprint of your mind, soul and emotions.

As a small boy, I remember always being called
by my dad to massage the back of his neck. He
had hypertension. And he couldnt eat fatty foods
because these caused his blood pressure to shoot
up.
When Dad retired at the age of 65, his
hypertension vanished the very next day. Why?
Because of the law of unity. When he stopped
working, the unity between his emotions and his
body was restored.
Now that hes older, he gets to eat litson, crispy
pata and nothing happens to his blood pressure.
This only shows that the mind and the emotions
and the spirit and the soul are connected to the
body. It was not the fatty things Dad was eating
that caused his hypertension. It was stress. There
was unity between the amount of stress he was
experiencing at work and the blood pressure that
went through his blood vessels.
I remember my own experience. I got sick
when I was 14 years old and a priest came to pray
over me. He told me, Jump up and down, and get
out of your depression! The reason youre sick is
because youre depressed.
He was right.
The day before, I was supposed to join our
youth group in giving a Life in the Spirit Seminar in
the province. But my parents didnt allow me to go
and I missed being with my crush who was going
to be there.
At first, I didnt see the connection. But slowly
I understood.
And I never forgot that experience. Whenever
youre going through a lot of stress, your immune
system goes down, and germs could easily
overwhelm you because your defenses are down.
When you cannot identify your negative
emotions, they come out as all sorts of tumors and
ulcers and arthritis and other illnesses. But if you
are able to identify those negative emotions, bring
them out, share it with a friend, come before the
Lord, pray, and give it to Him, then you are able to
have better health and a better body. What you feel,
you can heal. And you are able to take better care
of Gods temple.
I also remember this woman who had such a
deep hurt.
Bro. Bo, my best friend swindled me. My best
friend!
When did she do this?
Ten years ago. I say, Sana madapa siya. Sana
magkaroon siya ng cancer.

Watch Bo Sanchez in a new Internet Show every day at www.preacherinbluejeans.com

How is she?
Ayun, masaya naman.
How are you?
Eto, may cancer.
There is indeed a connection between the mind,
soul, spirit and the body.
And I have seen so many people who have
been healed from all sorts of diseases simply
because they forgave. I have seen so many people
get healed simply because they made a decision to
trust and offer their anxieties and their worries to
the Lord.
3. The Four Laws on Physical Health
a. The Law of Physical Activity. 1 Timothy
1:8 says, Physical exercise has some value. Do
you exercise? Why dont you exercise? Because I
dont have time. I hear that over and over again.
But thats a lie. You know whats a more honest
answer? I dont want to make time.
You know what my exercise is? I bought the
cheapest rubber shoes in the world, put it on and I
would just walk. Im a lazy guy Im not a super
athlete. But you know, its enough for me to just
walk 20 minutes a day. I feel so good after doing
that.

in the medical industry will over-test and overtreat. So, challenge every test, every procedure,
every medicine prescribed to you. It is your right to
ask for a second and third opinion. Ask questions.
Study! Become an expert. Remember, the dangers
of being over-treated are at least as great as the
dangers of being under-treated.
d. The Law of Stress vs. Toxic Stress. Stress
is part of life. If you dont have stress, youre dead.
What you want to avoid is excessive amounts of
stress or toxic stress. And this happens when you
feel you are no longer in control no control over
circumstances and no control over your response to
those circumstances. Stress can be good but only if
it is the right kind and does not overwhelm you.
Everyday, make a choice to live life well.
Breathe in Gods love. Meditate. Be at quiet. Be at
peace. Take care of Gods house you.

b. The Law of Nutritional Frugality. There

are four stages in life. The first stage is when you
believe in Santa Claus. The second stage is when
you no longer believe in Santa Claus. The third
stage is when you become Santa Claus to your
children. And the fourth stage is when you start to
look like Santa Claus.
Eat vegetables every day. Eliminate red meat
from your diet. Take in sugars, caffeine and alcohol
in moderation. Drink eight glasses of water every
day. Your attitude is the key to being healthy. Learn
to enjoy this way of eating to keep fit, feel good and
live happily.
c. The
Law
of
Minimal
Medical
Invasiveness. The Philippines has great doctors
with wonderful values in their hearts. What sets
our doctors here apart from those in other countries
is their compassion and humaneness Filipino
culture at its best. But then you are still the one in
charge of your wellness team. You are the central
character, not your doctor. You make the decisions
about your health.
Medicine is business with payrolls to pay
and budgets to attain. It is possible then that those

Parang bahay ng daga.
I come from a poor family.
So poor that when one of my
friends finally found my house, even though I
tried to hide from him where I lived, that was his
reaction. So I knew what I wanted very early on in
life: to get rich. That was very clear to me.
Gagawin Kitang Donya
My father was a kargador. Those who deliver
beer nowadays use a kartilya. At that time, my
father would have to manually carry two to three
cases of beer, riding at the back of the delivery truck
come rain or shine, on top of the cases of beer. My
mother would hand him two extra t-shirts daily to
bring to work. But he would still go home dirty and
stinking.
Because of my fathers working condition,
nagkaroon ng tubig dun sa joints niya. He became
partially disabled. So he retired. My mother carried
the financial burden and sold ice to the maglulugaw.
Her income dictated the amount of food we could
eat. If she sells P20 then we could only buy food
worth P20. So when I saw our poverty, I told her,
Ma, gagawin kitang donya (Ill make you a rich
woman).
Elite Group
In school, I was a consistent honor student. I
should have stopped studying for lack of funds. But
in the nick of time, I was able to get a scholarship
so I was able to finish college. I was able to join
San Miguel Corporation, got a masteral degree, and
was able to climb the steep corporate ladder. I will
attain all that my father couldnt do. That was my
goaland I was able to achieve it. My father didnt
even have his own desk, I had an executive table.
My father couldnt afford to buy a car, he just rode
at the back of the truck. I owned an airconditioned
car. So it was like a reversal of fortune. Our standard
of living improved and we moved to a well-heeled
neighborhood.
I was able to fulfill my pledge to Mama to make
her a doa someday. I remember her with her chin
up, seated at the back of my brand-new car. She had
on those fashionista shades and a brunette coiffure,
with her right arm resting on the headrest of the
other seat.
I was able to travel. I collected more than a
dozen magnets from various European locations. My
friends and I were even called the elite group of the
Young Upbeat Professionals for Peace (Yuppeace),

KerygmaSep2007 { 17 }

the group I was involved in.

A Free Gift
A priest in Don Bosco, where I had attended several
retreats, asked me to be a host during the 10th World
Youth Day. Thats how I got to emcee the WYD vigil in
Luneta in 1995. When all lights were turned off and there
was just a sea of candlelight around me, I realized how
blessed I was. That started my gratitude which became
like a chain reaction. Thank you for my existence. Thank
you for giving me a good job. The thanksgiving went
deeper and deeper until I realized that the greatest gesture
I could make for all the blessings was to offer myself
completely. So I started to explore.
I went to the WYD in France in 1997 so I could
deepen my gratitude. After the gathering, we went to
Lourdes. I lined up at the grotto and stretched out my
arms like everyone else was doing so I could receive a
drop of water. But I was so disappointed because I didnt
receive a single drop on my hand. But when I reached the
center, I looked up and a drop of water hit my eye. It was
like the Lord was telling me, I will come to your life not
because of your efforts. I will come as a free gift.
My friends and I would pass by the Christ the King
parish in Greenmeadows after our gimiks. Wed visit the
Blessed Sacrament and then go home. I saw the poster
of the Jesuits there. So I attended their vocation seminar.
When I went to their gathering, we had sharings. I was
very arrogant. I questioned everything they did. Still, out
of curiosity, I continued attending the vocation seminars
at Arvisu, the pre-novitiate house of the Society, every
Monday. Then we had a workshop. During that workshop,
I was asked, If you were totally free, what would you
want to do with your life? That made me want to check
out their way of life so I asked the workshop director if
I can stay at the Arvisu. I stayed there from January to
March 1998. At the end of that period, I was accepted.
That was when my journey began. When I was accepted,
I realized, Oh my God, how do I proceed? Im a
breadwinner. How could I enter the priesthood?
Our Vocation
I lied to my family and to my girlfriend and didnt
tell them about Arvisu. Id work in the morning and
go home to the Arvisu. Being accepted by the Society
forced the issue out in the open. When I told my parents
of my plan to enter religious life, my mother just cried.
My father asked, Paano na kapag nasa bundok ka na?
(What will become of you when youre assigned in the
boondocks?) And my sister said, Mahal namin ang
kahit anong mahal mo. (We love whoever and whatever
you love) My girlfriend, who is a daily communicant
and who had never said the words I love you before,
said them a day before I entered the seminary.

{ 18 } KerygmaSep2007

Then I entered my summer of darkness. It was as

if the Lord told me, So Javy, you became rich. You
used your abilities. Can you enter into this mystery
without holding onto anything? I was trying to arrange
everything to enter the seminary. I needed to raise money
to pay off the balance of the housing loan I availed of. I
sold what I could, down to my CDs, ties and expensive
Armani polos. In my accounting, I was still short of P1M.
As a last resort, and with the approval of my spiritual
director, I did the unthinkable: I begged for money. I
asked for a monthly solicitation of P500 for two years
from my friends through email. Initially, I couldnt click
the Send icon. It was so humiliating for me. I used to
enjoy P500 worth of ice cream with friends at The Pen
and now, I was thinking of asking for financial support.
But I was able to do it. Not a single soul turned me
down. The email got passed around and I had more than

to solve our financial problems. But my time with them

was nearing the end and I still didnt have a solution. Two
days before I returned to the seminary, a former neighbor
said I had unclaimed letters. When I went to pick them
up, one was from Manulife talking about demutualization
and asking me to pick up a check. The check turned out
to be a hundred times more than the amount I needed. I
realized that God perhaps is really like that. Sasagarin
ka hanggang buong-buo ang pagkapit mo sa Kanya (He
will allow you fall until you almost hit rock-bottom so
that you hold on completely on nothing else but Him).
Always, the invitation of Christ to me is one big word
trust. I also came to realize that it is not only my
vocation; it is our vocation. My family has to embrace
and accept their role in my vocation.

a hundred people who said yes, some from strangers. I

was able to make it on the entrance day, May 30, crying
like a baby with a refrain in my mind, I am here!
On my first week as a novice, Id walk to the gate
of the Sacred Heart Novitiate in Novaliches and would
wait for my black car to pick me up. I grieved for that
shining, fully loaded car which symbolized all that
I had: purchasing power, luxury, mobility, comfort,
friends. Slowly, I learned to accept and to really let
go. Then I learned that my family was in dire financial
straits though they kept it from me so as not to disturb
my formation. I had overlooked to include in my plans
the payments for the amelyar. It had gone up and they
couldnt pay the amount. Nor could I at that point. I got
so angry with God. I told Him, This is between us. Its
my vocation so let me be the one to suffer. Dont get my
parents involved. The superiors allowed me to go home

Magpaligaw
Its been 10 years since I entered the Society. I will
be a deacon next year. Ive been through a lot in those
years. We underwent trials and we were immersed in
different kinds of environments: community, mission,
hospital, factory and urban poor. I had difficulty when I
was immersed in a squatters area. I was haunted by my
past when we were so poor.
The good thing about the Society is that they try to
sharpen what youre already good at. So when I was a
novice, they asked me to handle the retreat house which
was on the red at that time. We were able to earn half a
million from it. When I was in my regency, I was also
able to teach MBA courses and to plan the funds of the
Ateneo University system. I realized that the Lord will
use all of me, even my weakness. Like in giving spiritual
direction, young professionals are the ones who come
to me. I learned to be more compassionate since I, too,
had gone through all their struggles. At present, Im the
executive director of the Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan,
the socio-political arm of the Society. We educate and
advocate, like the Pinoy Voters Academy and CGE
(Citizenship by Good Example).
Throughout all these, it is as if the Lord has been
telling me, Pansinin mo naman ako. Nililigawan kita
(Pay attention Im courting you). Lay down your
defenses. And when I allowed Him to woo me, yung
magpaligaw ka, naging magpaligaw ka. In the end, what
your title is, what youre doing, hindi na mahalaga yun,
kundi kung Sino ang kasama mo (The are not important;
only Who is with you). Thats whats important. Let go
and let God.

ou suddenly wake up at two oclock in the morning with a dreadful

Getting up from bed, you

instinctively go to your sons room. Light seeps through the bottom of
the door and you wonder why hes still awake. You think that maybe he
fell asleep while studying and forgot to turn out the lights. You turn the doorknob
but its locked. You knock incessantly and call out his name, praying the whole
time that your worst fears may be proven wrong.
After a few minutes, your son opens the door. With a smile on his face he
explains that hes been reviewing for an exam. Although you feel relieved to see
hes OK, theres still a nagging thought at the back of your mind something is
amiss. Then you notice that his eyes are bloodshot and have that glassy look as
he stares at you. You take a quick peek in his room, surprised to see how neat and
orderly his things were. Your son explains he couldnt stand the mess so he fixed
his room up in between his study time. You gently remind him to sleep, as itll
be morning in a few hours. He gives you a hurried peck on the cheek, bids you
good night, and closes the door. You linger a few minutes more, trying to convince
yourself that everythings fine. But that dreadful feeling remains.
How many of you are like this parent? You sense that your child is in trouble
but you choose not to face whats happening behind the locked door. You ignore
that voice within that urges you to reach out and ask your child if theres anything
wrong, to assure him you are there for him no matter what happens. Thats why to
this day you remain in the twilight zone of dread and uncertainty while believing
in your self-imposed illusion that your childs OK, your family lifes OK, you
are OK. But be honest with yourself admit that there is a problem. And that
problem is addiction.
Gerald G. May, author of the book Addiction and Grace, defines addiction as
any compulsive, habitual behavior that limits the freedom of human desire. He
further explains that addiction is caused by the attachment, or nailing, of desire to
specific objects. Defined in this way, it can be gleaned that there is a connection
between addiction and behavior. Your action leads to addictive behavior. And
behavior is not only limited to doing physical activities (like doing drugs,
abusing alcohol, getting hooked on computer games or watching TV all day long)
but also includes thinking. You can also be addicted or attached to certain
images, memories, fantasies, ideas, concepts and feelings. To an extent, you can
also be addicted to moods like depression, cynicism, shyness and others.
But then theres another definition of addiction you should know about, one
that is very relevant to Catholics and Christians. Addiction is a sin, according to
Mar Gutierrez, Center Director of the Restorer of the Breach Drug Rehabilitation
Center, which caters to male drug dependents ages 13 to 45 years old. Our body
is the temple of God it is His gift to us. If we are going to ruin our bodies
(by our addictions), it would be an abomination in the sight of God, a sin in His
sight.
Indeed, addiction leads the addict to become idolatrous. That is because the
addict tends to worship the object of his attachment rather than freely worshipping

feeling that something bad was happening.

God and loving his neighbors. This is what Gerald May says about
addictions idolatrous nature: It is the absolute enemy of human
freedom, the antipathy of love.

CHARACTERISTICS OF ADDICTION
It has been said that the best strategy to use in overcoming the
enemy is to get to know him well. In order to start helping your
loved ones (and yourselves) be free of addiction, you must first
know its qualities. By studying the characteristics of addiction
and becoming well versed with its nature, you will be able to
identify areas of addiction in the your life and in the lives of those
whom you wish to help.
In Addiction and Grace, author Gerald May identifies five
essential characteristics of addiction:
1. Tolerance
2. Withdrawal symptoms
3. Self-deception
4. Loss of willpower
5. Distortion of attention
Tolerance, explains May, is the phenomenon of always
wanting or needing more of the addictive behavior or the object
of attachment in order to feel satisfied. Simply put, its being in a
state where whatever you have or do is never quite enough. That
is why it is very difficult for the addict to be freed from the vicious
cycle of abuse.
You are in bondage, shares Mar, who was a drug addict
for 12 years and was rehabilitated by Gods grace in 1987. To
be honest, its hard to be free from your addiction. Its like being
chained. You really need someone or many others to help you be
set free from this bondage.
Withdrawal symptoms are the bodys response when it
has been deprived of something it has become accustomed to.
These are symptoms that occur from suddenly stopping the use of
substances (or the addictive behavior) after chronic or prolonged
ingestion (or practice).
There are two types of withdrawal symptoms stress
reaction and rebound or backlash reaction. The addicts body
becomes accustomed to the addictive substance that when the
intake drugs or alcohol is stopped, the body senses something is
wrong and sends danger signals.
Stress reactions could come in the form of uneasiness and
irritability, extreme agitation, tremors or even overwhelming
panic. Rebound or backlash reactions are symptoms that are
the exact opposite of those caused by the addictive behavior.
According to May, Backlashes occur because the bodys balancing
mechanisms have become dependent on a particular substance
or particular pattern of behavior. When that particular factor is
suddenly removed, the balance swings in the opposite direction.
Rebound or backlash reactions range from hyperactivity, seizures,
lethargy, depression and somnolence (drowsiness).
The third characteristic of addiction, self-deception, involves
the tricks the mind can play on the addict. This is where the will
of the addict struggles against itself the brain subconsciously
foils every attempt to stop or control the addictive behavior.
Mind tricks have one goal to keep the addiction going. These
symptoms include denial and repression, displacement, hiding,

{ 22 } KerygmaSep2007

rationalization, breakdown and many

others.
Another
characteristic
of
addictive behavior is loss of
willpower. The more an addict
convinces himself that he can stop,
the more he defeats himself. Even if
it is his intention to give up the vice,
his resolve to change fails him.
The fifth and last among the
characteristics of addiction is
distortion of attention. In the
addicts mind, there will be no
room for anything else save for the
task of getting a fix. The urge for
the addictive substance or behavior
usurps the addicts attention, leaving
him unable to do or feel anything else.
Even the capacity to love is hindered.
Mar attests to this from his own
experience: Ang hanap lang namin
(ng barkada) magkaroon kami ng
high (All we were after was getting
high). During our time, cocaine,
marijuana, Valium and even cough
syrup were the drugs wed use.
Study these traits of addiction
well. Knowing them may just be the
key to start you or your loved ones on
the road to recovery.

THE PROBLEM OF
ADDICTION
Addiction goes beyond abuse of
drugs and alcohol. You can become
addicted to computer games, food,
sex, TV and many others. Too much
of anything, even if its a good thing, can be addictive.
Having served for more than 20 years in the drug rehabilitation
center that is part of the ministry of their church, Mar has already
encountered various forms of addiction. Here at the center, we help
drug addicts, alcoholics and even depressed people. Actually, we even
have (under our care) computer addicts. Right now, we also have a
gambling addict in our program.
But no matter what type of addiction it is, the root of the problem
is found in the history of the Church according to Mar. Ive been
studying the history of the Church. Ive learned that the Church, in a
sense, failed to manifest the glory of God. Thats the underlying reason
why people turn to drugs and other vices. Because if His glory has been
completely made manifest by the Church and people have seen it, then
that would be enough. Theres no reason for them to look for meaning
elsewhere else, right? When I attended a seminar in Israel seven years
ago, I learned how vast the drug problem has become. It has spread
to global proportions. Theres big money in drugs its a lucrative
business. Apart from illegal drugs, people can easily get hooked on
cigarettes, rugby, food, alcoholic drinks and other stuff that are easily
bought anywhere. Thats why its hard to solve the problem.

Even though the addiction

problem has pervaded the
very foundation of society,
the family, there is still hope
of recovery and restoration
by faith in and the grace of
God. Grace is the undeserved
favor from God (given to us).
I was an addict but by Gods
grace, He forgave and purified
me. Thats the grace of God.
As center director, Mar
believes the Lord called him
to this mission of helping
other addicts not only to
overcome their addiction but
more importantly to know the
Lord and come into a personal
relationship with Him. When
I completed the rehabilitation
program here (at the center)
in 1987, I decided not to
go back home, because Ill
be going back to the same
barkada, the same place. Im
weak, Ill admit that. When
I prayed about it, God told
me, Stay here. Tulungan mo
ang mga taong kapareho ng
dating kalagayan mo. (Help
others who were in the same
situation you were in.)
He shares further that
while serving other addicts is
not an easy task, he believes it
can be done, only if it is done
from the heart. With all my
experience being in this ministry for almost 20 years, I can
say that its hard to help them, if your hearts not there. But
if it is, even if its hard, you know the Lord is there to help
you. Even if you have many shortcomings you dont
know what to do or dont have the patience for it or you
lack wisdom the Lord fills in all of that.

THE ROAD TO RECOVERY: WHAT CAN

BE DONE
Addiction, just like any sickness, has a cure. It may
be a long journey down the road of recovery but the addict
will eventually get there by Gods grace and a lot of help
from others. Something can be done to begin the healing of
the body, mind and soul. The first thing to do is to humbly
admit that you or your loved is sick, that you are an addict
and want to be clean. Then humble yourself further and
ask for help.
There are many rehabilitation centers and support
groups that offer a holistic recovery program. At the
Repairer of the Breach Center, for example, the program

Want more Frappr.com friends? Add us! www.frappr.com/kerygmafamily

consists of three phases of Christian living and motivational

activities that run from 12 to 18 months, depending on the progress
of the patient. The programs character building principle is
taken from 2 Peter 1:3-8, notably verse 4 which says, Through
these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that
through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape
the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. At the heart
of the centers program, according to Mar, is the belief that only
Jesus Christ can change your life. Only Jesus can set you free.
You want freedom? Go to God, he claims.
The first phase is called the induction/adjustment phase
where the patients mental, emotional and physical states are
assessed. When a patient joins the program, we have him undergo
a detoxification procedure, depending on the level of intoxication.
This usually lasts from seven days to two weeks, depending on
the patients level of addiction. During detox, all that the patient
does is take medicines, eat, take more medicines and take lots of
rest. That is because the patient needs to rest his mind. The patient
is also monitored by a psychiatrist, explains Mar.
After detox, the patient is brought to the center and given an
orientation and is prepared to go on to the second phase.
The second phase is the discipleship/training phase. This is
when the patient participates in the daily activities of the center,
which starts at 5:30 in the morning. Upon waking, the patient does
some exercises, Bible reading and quiet time, and spends time
for praise and worship. Apart from the daily activities, the patient
is given training in Bible principles and truths, basic education
and vocational/job training. It is also during the second phase that
the patient undergoes various therapies (individual, group, work,
music/worship and family).
When changes and progress is seen in the patient, he moves
on to the third phase the re-entry/duty phase. This happens
after six to seven months of the program. During this time, the
patient goes on go home leave. The patient is accompanied by a
counselor the first time he visits his home. Initially, the visit could
be just to have lunch with his family. Then after several more
weeks, the patient would be allowed to stay overnight at home,
slowly progressing to living with the family permanently. Even
if the patient successfully completes the program, the center still
continues to offer after-care support.

100 PERCENT RECOVERY: IS IT POSSIBLE?

Once an addict, always an addict is the stigma that haunts
recovering addicts everywhere. Mar thinks otherwise. I believe
100 percent change can happen by the grace of God. Not because
of what other people can do (for the addict) but what God can do.
Mar attests to this possibility by his very own experience.
Imagine, I was already an addict at 12 years of age and yet I
graduated from college with a degree in Aircraft Maintenance
Engineering. I also believe that Im where I am now through the
prayers of my mom. Aside from his mothers unconditional love
and fervent prayers during the darkest time of his life, he also had
the support of the counselors at the center where he now serves.
Mar has come full circle in his life in his time of need,
he received much. Now its his turn to give back to God. He has
devoted his life to leading the lost back to the Lord and giving hope
to those struggling to be free of the addiction.

Helping
Outcasts Fly

Jon, you were an Outcast once. Why do you think

, too, was an outcast once.

I went by the usual route got introduced into
drugs by friends early in high school, tried all sorts
of drugs (LSD, cocaine, heroin, marijuana, etc.), until I
got hooked and sustained my habit by pushing drugs as
well. When the authorities caught up with us, my brother
decided to bring me to a rehabilitation center in Manila,
instead of having me in jail. My parents, who were in
Nueva Vizcaya, were shocked and in disbelief. They had
no choice but to support me in my rehab program.
That seemingly unfortunate incident in my young
life planted the seed that brought forth my mission in life
many, many years later.
Liking the Program
I went through the whole program in DARE-Manila,
which lasted for 18 months. If others considered it as
torture to be in a controlled environment for 18 months,
my experience was different. In fact, I liked what the
workers and volunteers were doing.
While in the program, I was able to develop
a personal relationship with our Lord and process
my inner wounds, especially those which drove me,
unconsciously, to drugs. I became a more disciplined
and organized person, someone who is able to empathize
with other people in the same boat, someone who sees
what outcasts like drug addicts truly need to be able to
move on. Even during the last few months of my own
program, I was already helping run the program and
even became the coordinator of the house. After my
program, I stayed in the center for five more years to
work as program director.
When I got out, I worked in a manufacturing firm,
then after six months went back to Baguio to continue my
schooling. While in college, I was offered a managerial
position in a friends company and went back to Manila.
It was then that I finally earned my college degree. From
then on, I switched between corporate work and rehab
work. After having experienced disappointments in the
previous rehab centers I worked for, I decided to set up a
foundation and actualize my vision of what a true rehab
center really is.

the Seagulls Flight Foundation, Inc. The story provided

the framework for the way we operated our center. Like

the seagulls trying to learn how to stretch their wings
and fly, drug-dependents are considered outcasts in
society they are treated condescendingly, without hope
for recovery and any future. And even when they have
recovered, a lot of them still stumble. It is thus important
that they remain in flock or fly together till they are
ready to face life again on their own. They reach out for
one another, wherever life brings them.
At Seagulls, we use the Therapeutic Community
(TC) modality as our mode of treatment. TC simply
means helping man help himself. We operate like a
small community that is wrapped in norms and values.
We treat each other like brothers and sisters, wherein
everybody has to lift a finger to contribute something to
the community. It is like one big family when someone
is down or lost, others are there to pick him up. We sit
down and talk to see whats going on with the brothers
and sisters. We tell one another, If youre okay, let us
know. If youre not okay, let us know also.
This is true even after they have graduated from the
program. We have a support group called Inner Circle,
which is composed of the graduates. They meet regularly,
or at the very least get in touch with each other through
our e-group or through text. We do this deliberately so
that no one among the flock gets lost again. Responsible
love and concern for one another continue for life, and
regardless of distance.
We make sure, too, that the families of our residents
and graduates are involved in the program. The support
group for them is called Family Circle, which meets
regularly at our office. Anybody can just come in at the
appointed time and feel welcome.
Helping Other Outcasts
You have to practice and see the real gull, the
good in every one of them, and to help them see it in
themselves. Thats what I mean by love.
At Seagulls, most of our staff are recovering addicts.
We expose them to local and foreign training to upgrade
their competencies on rehab work. Having gone through
the program themselves, they have acquired the necessary
values that are most helpful in understanding those who
are in the same boat as they were before.
Even my wife, an HR practitioner, and I continue to
get the necessary training and exposure so we can live out
the vision and mission we have set so that even those
with broken wings can fly and soar like never before.
The dozen gulls by the shoreline came to meet him,
none saying a word. He felt only that he was welcome
and that this was home.
At Seagulls, we try to make this a reality.

POP QUIZ

Take the test and find out if youre prone to

addictive behavior.
Prepared by: Judith Concepcion

he Wikipedia Encyclopedia defines Addictive

Behavior as any activity, substance, object, or
behavior that has become the major focus of a
persons life to the exclusion of other activities, or
that has begun to harm the individual or others physically,
mentally, or socially (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addiction).
Below is a test to determine whether you have
tendencies towards addictive behavior. Just answer Yes or
No to each question.
1.
Do you have a family history of addiction
(alcohol, substance, nicotine, gambling, sexual,
others)?
2.
Are there members of your family who has
the tendency to be addicted to the things
mentioned in number 1?
3.
Do you have cravings for food, cigarettes,
alcohol, etc.? Do your cravings control you,
meaning you find it difficult to stop or cut down
even if it affects your daily living, health and
relationships?
4.
Did you grow up in a family where there is lack
of parental involvement (parents not spending
time with their kids; parents who dont care
what happens to their children)?
5.
Do you have feelings of worthlessness?
6.
When things go wrong, even if its not your fault,
do you criticize or blame yourself?
7.
Do you always try to be the center of attention?
8.
Do you dislike change?
9.
Do you see change as difficult and therefore,
you feel hopeless, helpless and worthless?
10. Do you resent people when they criticize you or
call your attention regarding your habit?
11. Do you try to cover up your habit by lying or
being secretive?
12. Do you always act on your impulses without
regard to its consequences?

Do you have a repetitive urge to buy or shop just for

the sake of it?
Do you always buy on credit and pay only the
minimum amount due?
Do you always go beyond your credit card limit?
Do you order the same food in the same restaurant
every time you dine even if there are other menu
selections?
Do you resort to substances, behavior or activities to
escape your problems or worries or to feel good?
Do you feel irritable and frustrated when you miss
out on a drink, a puff, or anything that you craved
for?
Do you enjoy extreme adventure and like taking
risks?
Are you more likely to question authority and
challenge tradition?

If you have answered YES to any one of the questions

above, it may be an indication that you have a tendency toward
addictive behavior. Please note that this test does not provide
an accurate picture of an individual with an addictive behavior.
The goal is to create awareness on possible tendencies and
thus help you take preventive steps to avoid falling into such
behavior.

China.
Fr. John: Thank you, Bo. Im very happy for this chance
to share my experience in China.
Bo: Father, how long have you been teaching in
China?
Fr. John: Im going on my third year, teaching in a
seminary at China.
Bo: Thats what shocks me, Fr. John, that there is
actually a seminary in Beijing.
Fr. John: Its a national Catholic seminary right in the
Daxing district in Beijing.
Bo: Thats amazing. And youve been there teaching
Acriptures. Has Scriptures always been your field?
Fr. John: Yes.

Bo: Really? Catholic nuns in Beijing, China wow!

Thats beautiful, Father. Thats good news indeed. Praise
God!
Fr. John: Just this year, in China there were about 800
baptisms. So, how else can you read the signs of the times
but that the Lord is working there?
Bo: Amen! Praise God! Before China, where were you
assigned?
Fr. John: I was working as a missionary in Thailand for almost
37 years. I never worked in the Philippines, though.
Bo: And you were ordained where?
Fr. John: In Jerusalem.
Bo: You entered the seminary and took your training
where?
Fr. John: In the Don Bosco Seminary at Canlubang, Laguna
and I took further studies in Israel.

Bo: Why is there a seminary there in Beijing?

Fr. John: There are many dioceses in China that have no
seminaries. And so to solve this problem, the Patriotic
Association built a seminary for these dioceses.

Bo: My gosh! You were ordained in Jerusalem.

Fr. John: Yes, A long time ago.

Bo: Wonderful! And this is the Patriotic Association

of the Catholic Church?
Fr. John: Yes, the very same one.

Bo: Maybe you can share some last words, Father. What
are your reflections of being on mission in China for the
past three years.
Fr. John: It shows me that God is really at work in that place
and that He is giving us signs of hope in China.

Bo: And you also teach in Rome?

Fr. John: I teach mostly at the Sisters of St. Paul. Every
year, they have what they call a session, where sisters
from all over the world come to attend and they ask me
to teach.
Bo: Amen! Thats amazing! Now I can see our
imagination of China is wrong. We think of China as,
Oh, theres no prayer there. Theres no mass there.
But you know, youre there, Fr. John and you teach.
How many seminarians are there in the seminary?
Fr. John: There are 42 seminarians as of this year.
Hopefully, next year there will be more.
Bo: Praise God!
Fr. John: Aside from the seminarians, there are around
40 to 50 priests every year coming for an updating.
Bo: Wonderful! Wonderful!
Fr. John: There are also nuns who come over for their
own formation over a hundred of them every
year.

Bo: Alleluia!
There you have it, Fr. John, a man of God, doing His
work everywhere ordained in Israel, assigned in Thailand
for many years and now serving in China.
God is at work all over the world because of men like
Fr. John.

God is powerfully at
work in China and
He is giving us signs
of hope there.

On EAGLES
Wings
By Eva Monserrat

t was supposed to be just another weekend event.

The
only difference was that it was to be held in far-off
Lanao del Sur, a place that I had never visited before.
We were upbeat, caught up in the excitement on becoming
witnesses to the growing friendship between Christians and
Muslims through the annual Gawad Kalinga Highway of Peace
(HOPe) held every April. HOPe is a caravan for peace where
Christians and Muslims travel together in Mindanao, plying
the route where there are GK communities and convening in
a GK village to build homes together in solidarity.
This years HOPe caravan was held in Kapatagan, Lanao
del Norte last April 21. Many groups came from Cagayan
de Oro, Iligan, Butuan, Surigao, Bukidnon, Zamboanga and
Davao who braved the roads in the dark for a long journey
towards Lanao del Norte. Kidapawan in North Cotabato
brought the largest delegation.
Our own caravan started from the Philippine airbase in
Villamor. Seventeen Gawad Kalinga workers including one
volunteer from the United States and a Muslim colleague
were to fly to Cotabato, from there to Cagayan de Oro on
board a military C-130 plane which carried soldiers, their

{ 32 } KerygmaSep2007

families and us to Mindanao for free.

I, for one became apprehensive, knowing as I do that the C130 was a cargo plane that had no regular seats, where people and
boxes occupied the same place and passengers had to stand during
the duration of the flight. But when youre on a meager budget,
you take what is available.
We were instructed to present ourselves for inspection at 3
a.m. although the aircraft was not supposed to leave until 6 a.m.
At precisely 6 a.m., we were asked to board, military officers first,
and then women and children. The plane was filled to capacity.
Some lucky ones got to sit on the jump seats at the sides of the
plane. The rest of us had to find whatever vacant space there was
in between the luggage or sat on them.
We sat inside the plane, slowly weltering in the confined
space, waiting for take-off. It didnt come. Instead we were told
to disembark because something seemed to be wrong with one of
the propellers. Repair was carried out and we saw men carrying
steel sheets into the work area. We prayed, worried that the delay
would cause us to miss seeing the HOPe caravan off.
After interminable minutes, we re-boarded, and the plane
took-off. Being used to the smooth take-off of commercial flights,

it was quite a jolt to experience

the abrupt start and movement
of the C-130. In an hour, we
were in Cotobato and we were
quite elated to see several
people who were with us upon
disembarking. Hooray! We
would finally have more space
to ourselves on the final leg
to Cagayan de Oro. But our
elation was short-lived. A group
of people, more numerous than
the group that left, came on
board.
We again waited, this time
for 45 minutes, as the engine
wad started and kept running.
Still, no take-off. Again we
had to disembark for repairs.
We texted the GK Executive
Director, Kuya Luis Oquiena,
for his decision as to whether
we should take a commercial
flight but budgetary constraints
dictated his answer wait. He
said the people in Lanao del
Norte would be informed that
we were trying really hard to
join them.
At 9 a.m., the plane finally
took off. It wasnt long in
the flight when we realized
that something was terribly
wrong. We didnt seem to be
moving but simply gliding.
We could hear the engines
roar but sometimes we would
feel we were losing altitude.
My ears were terribly painful and the discomfort was too much.
I remember turning to my husband and speechlessly trying to
convey that I couldnt bear the pain any longer. I saw another
GK worker opening and closing his mouth, contorting his face
in a great effort to relieve the pressure in his ears. Everyone was
silent, too scared to voice out their fears. Later we found out the
left propeller had stopped in mid-air.
When we landed, we thought our ordeal was over. It wasnt.
We learned we had landed not in Cagayan de Oro but in Mactan
airport. The pilot had decided to head to Cebu where the plane
could be repaired. It was an effort to lift our tired bodies out of the
plane and to step out onto blessed, firm ground.
We had had no breakfast, no lunch and now we were stranded,
with very little money among us. The decision was made a
unanimous NO to continuing with the C-130 flight although we
were told that the plane would be ready to leave by 4 p.m.
God is truly good. When we called Rey Balatayo, a brother
from Cebu, for assistance, he volunteered the information that
his brother-in-law was a soldier in Mactan. We were picked up

from Mactan and brought

to Cebu proper. Pooling our
money, we bought tickets for
a boat trip to Cagayan de Oro
that was leaving by 8 p.m. We
reached CDO in the morning
of the next day but we were
still nowhere near the HOPe
caravan venue. We had to
travel over land for another
four hours.
What a great relief it was
to finally arrive at the HOPe
caravan! It felt good to be
with friends who had been
praying incessantly for our
safety, to be with our Muslim
brothers who had also joined
in the prayers.
All
the
trailblazers
from all parts of Mindanao
converged
at
Barangay
Waterfalls in Kapatagan
hosted by Governor Angging
Dimaporo to build homes and
planted trees.
When we started HOPe
three years ago, it was the
Christians who championed
the (cause for the) Muslims.
But this time its the
Dimaporos
and
Muslim
partners championing for the
Christian poor in Lanao del
Norte. said GK Executive
Director Luis Oquiena as the
build site will have Christians
for its beneficiaries.
It is a great affirmation that there is a God who truly loves
the Filipino. Christians call him Christ, Muslims call him Allah,
but we all worship a God of love, he said. The GK community
here is jointly provided by the provincial government of Lanao del
Norte and ANCOP USA partners from South California and North
California sponsoring the JJ GK village- Fairfield, California and
SoCal Southbay 5 GK village.
The Highway of Peace was a celebration of the journey
towards healing Mindanao. If not for GK, we wont be seeing
each other here, affirmed Sultan Acraman Saripada, a former
rebel commander who joined the caravan.
Although we were not able to join the build activity, and our
stay was only brief compared to the long journey it took us to get
there, it was all worth it to be in the presence and company of
our fellow Muslim brothers and sisters. The real journey of peace
happened within each of us.
The journey towards healing continues until the Highway
of Peace convenes again next year at the GK Village in Panang,
Wao, Lanao del Sur.

September 15, 2007

Saturday, 8:00AM - 6:00PM
Quezon City

Its consistently powerful, often funny,

and always inspiring.

We believe that every Christian is called to be an intercessor. And we believe that many Catholic communities are
not experiencing Gods power as fully as the Lord wants
them to because they lack this important ministry.
Bring your community members to this seminar to learn
about the ministry of intercessionand let them discover
how simple it is! They will realize that everyone is called
to intercede. And as they become intercessors, you will
witness how the power of God will flow more in your
group!

The Homily

Great homilies are the fruit of good preparation.

he

Homily,

which we sometimes refer to as sermon, comes

from Greek and means explanation.

It follows the Gospel

proclamation and is the oldest form of Church
preaching based on the synagogue practice of a
rabbi explaining readings from the Old Testament to an
assembly. In the Gospel we see Jesus give a homily in the
synagogue after reading a passage from the prophet Isaiah
(cf. Lk 4:15-21).
At the onset of Christianity, the first Christians, being
Jews, continued with Sabbath observance in synagogues.
Then they trooped to a pre-designated house for Eucharist
where an Apostle or bishop-successor proclaimed the
Good News and conformed the Scriptures in light of the life,
death and resurrection of Christ, a pattern set on the road
to Emmaus by Jesus Himself. Much of the kerygma comes
from the Apostles homilies; many doctrinal teachings from
homilies of the Church Fathers.
Only a member of the clergy or a deacon can give the
homily, never the laity since it is a function of sacerdotal
ministry. Allowing laymen constitutes serious liturgical
abuse. Should such occur in your parish immediately
report the offence to the diocese.
A seven to 10-minute discourse that sticks to the
subject, connects the readings, and imparts catechesis
for Christian life is ideal. Otherwise the priest could lose
the people. Some priests are very good at delivering
concise homilies while there are others who can keep the
congregation glued for 15 minutes. Among our crop of
priests are a number who can make the liturgical readings
come alive in their exhortations. On the other
hand, there are also many poor homilists whose
deliveries are vague, incoherently lengthy and
rambling, bereft of doctrinal content, unrelated
to the Liturgy of the Word, neither here nor there
on Faith Matters.
Thorny issues are priests who take the
occasion to advance liberation theology,
political bias, or revisionist interpretations of
the Bible, especially rationalizations of the
miracles of Christ without giving the Churchs
orthodox teaching and can thus mislead. To
date, I have heard six priests deny the miracle
of multiplication of loaves in the Bread of
Life Discourse (John 6); stressing instead the
sharing of provisions and delving on this novel
demythologised exegesis conjectured by the

new biblical theorists of

the historico-critical school,
without once alluding to it
as presaging the Eucharistic
miracle.
A friend of mine
believes bad homilies is
one of the reasons why
some leave the Church.
Have you ever been to a
Mass where the priest sang
a secular love song instead
of giving a homily? I have.
Pardon me, Father, but the
pulpit is not the venue for
Pinoy Idol tryouts! The task
of the priest is to give catechesis for Christian life from the
proclaimed readings. Seated at the pews, we can learn a
good deal by being prayerfully attentive.
Great homilies are the fruit of good preparation. The
Church has a treasure trove in her Tradition a priest can
mine and give a complete Bible doctrine course through
the three-year liturgical cycle. He need not be a John
Chrysostom, Augustine, Aquinas, or Fulton Sheen, though
eloquence is definitely a plus; nevertheless, we have
heard very good
ones from priests
with bad grammar,
types whod make
you
wince,
yet
like the terriblyinarticulate St. John
Mary Vianney, they
always came across
with sound biblical
exegesis and solid
doctrine.

institutions and civic
groups. As a preacher,
Im also invited by
Catholic communities and church groups to give talks.
Let me share with you some differences between addressing
a church audience and a secular crowd.
A Christian audience is mostly loving and forgiving. You sing
off-key or croak at a high pitch and theyll still clap their hands
and say, Hes giving his all to the Lord! You crack a worn-out
joke you heard from the Dolphy-Panchito era and theyll still give
you a hearty laugh in appreciation
for your efforts. When you become
boring and they start yawning
(secretly) theyll think its the work
of the devil and they have weak
faith if they drop off snoozing. And
when theyre just about to give you
a deadening silence, just say the
magic words Amen! or God is good! or Lets clap our hands
to the Lord! and theyre back on their feet!
It can be very different with the secular crowd. Theyll eat
you alive! If you face them unprepared, unskilled or without K,
you can get booed. People may walk out on you. You may even
hear snide remarks like, Soli bayad! (Give back our money!)
or Luma na yan! (Thats an old one!) or Lipat sa Combat!
(Change the channel!). As a secular performer, Ive had my share
of those experiences. You just cant hide behind your title of a
brother or someone who has achieved this or that or shout
Alleluia and pray heaven strikes them with a lightning bolt.
But you know what? That can be good!
Why? Because with a secular audience you really have to
deliver. You cant be too relaxed and complacent. You have to be
at your best. You continuously hone your skills, develop new acts,
think of fresh stories and really funny jokes. You get to practice
hard and study more. And then apply these to your Christian
audience as well. Believe me, the patience and understanding of
Christian groups have limits, too.
The secular world also pays you. And thats doubly good.
Now you really have to perform well because you owe them their
moneys worth.

Not that you only give half of your best to Christian

communities and church groups.
In the Christian world, you are given an L.O. (love
offering) or a stipend as a token of gratitude for your service.
It can range from a free snack to a few hundred pesos and
sometimes to few thousand pesos depending on the capability,
generosity, and sensitivity of the host community. You cant
have standard rates. This is called service. This called
ministry. In fact, many of my regular ministries are for
free. They should be. I minister to jails and street kids and
poor communities especially in the provinces. For these
ministries I get to spend from my own pocket for gas, toll
fees (sometimes even airfare), food and allowances for my
team. I usually bring my band of musicians along with my
entire equipment (instruments, amplifiers, sound system,
and all) to give my best. I tremendously love doing this and
have no plans ever to stop serving for free. But how could
I sustain it?

The Secular World: My Training,

My Sustenance
I thank God for my other secular invitations that pay
well. They should, as they would pay a professional to do his
job. And I thank them for paying me and my team much more
than we expect. Why? Because this is how I sustain serving
other Christian communities. Otherwise, Ill be riding a bike
with my guitar on my back from Bulacan to any part of the
country.
I can give out generously with my right hand what I
receive abundantly with my left. And by Gods pure grace,
the flow doesnt stop. In fact, my secular and professional
clients may not know it but they are actually sponsoring our
ministry by subsidizing our expenses to serve many poor
communities.
Of course, the main agenda in dealing with the secular
world is to evangelize them. And that should be the biggest
pay of all.
If we have sown spiritual seed for you, is it a great thing
that we reap a material harvest from you? If others share this
rightful claim on you, do not we still more? Yet we have not
used this right. On the contrary, we endure everything so as
not to place an obstacle to the gospel of Christ.
(1 Corinthians 9: 11-12)

My Two Loaves
and Five Fish

By Sr. Guia Jimenez, MSC

one

had been asking to be sent on mission but was assigned instead

to take masteral studies in Theology, concentrating on

Biblical
Theology. After an unexpectedly extended period of
study, I received my long awaited notice. I thought I
could finally return and serve in Indonesia where I stayed for
a month. Surprise! Mother General wanted me in Ecuador.
Ecuador, South America? I never even considered it! I
was all set to serve in our communities in Asia to learn
Bahasa Indonesia or Vietnamese or Mandarin only to be
told I will be going to a Spanish-speaking country. No
matter, mission is mission.
The second surprise: What would I do in Ecuador?
My new Superior said to me, You will be teaching our
kids in Quito from ages seven to 12. Me? Teach English to
Spanishspeaking kids? The very thought frightened me.
I said to the Lord, God, you really have a sense of humor.
Seven years of Theology and I end up teaching English.
Thus, I came to Ecuador equipped with the more
important things: a heart eager for the missions, confidence
and faith in the Lord, and a
Spanish dictionary. Due to delays
with my missionary visa, I merely
had three short months before
school opened in September
to learn the marvels of Spanish
with all its complex structures,
declensions, reflexive verbs
and vocabulary. Great! The only
other English-speaking person in the community was my
Superior who had to leave for Italy a week after I arrived. I
was left in the loving hands of my Ecuadorian sisters who
neither spoke nor understood English. I had Spanish lessons
and casual conversations with them that involved body
language more than anything else. My Spanish dictionary
became my best friend.
I was also told that my name, Guia, is a household word
in Spanish and has a multitude of uses from telephone
directory, commentator, tourist guide, tourist map, etc. It
is better to use my second name: Antonietta. Ouch! Only
my mother used this name for me and then, only to call me
whenever I was in big trouble with her.
A new name, a new land, a new community, a
new language, new work anything else, Lord? Youre
beginning to challenge me a wee bit much, I said to God.
Trusting in the Lord, I braved the classroom armed
with my broken Spanish and started teaching our kids who
are mostly from families in a poor barrio named Rolds in
Northern Quito. I told them, You have to be patient with
me. Correct me when I say something wrong. If you help
me learn Spanish, I can help you learn English much better.
And so it went. My students became my Spanish teacher. But I

learned more than Spanish from these

kids: patience, innocence, acceptance,
thoughtfulness and most importantly,
forgiveness. No matter how angry I get
for their indiscipline and noise in the
classroom, the kids still seek me out
simply to give an embrace or to greet.
Eight months after, these kids have
stolen my heart with their affectionate sticky kisses, warm hugs
and their growing appreciation of English.
My mission in Ecuador has since become a series of
surprise services for which I have never felt fully prepared:
assistant coordinator for the parish youth group; assistant for
vocation promotion activities working with young women
discerning their state of life; giving some talks on Scripture and
our charism; a Holy Week mission to a poor barrio where in
five small communities we practically took the place of a very
heavily laden priest with 25 other small communities in his
hands, doing the whole Easter Triduum liturgy Washing of the
Feet, Blessing of the Candle, Blessing of the Water, Veneration
of the Cross, and giving communion (the priest left us with
consecrated hosts). I had to give a little homily to the people,
too. I honestly dont know where the words were coming from.
The people miraculously understood me and thanked me
profusely for my teachings.
It is true when God said He will give us the words we need
and not just for preaching. He gives me the words at whenever
and wherever I need them. God will ask for our two loaves of
bread and five fish. If we put everything we have in His hands, He
can do marvels with the little we have. God can communicate
His love with whatever we are willing to offer.

If we put everything in
Gods hands, He can do
marvels with the little
that we have.
