History and Company Profile

JAKA Equities Corporation (JEC) is a maker of quality safety
matches that are widely distributed in the Philippines. They have
different brands like EMI, Guitar, Royal Red, and Fuego that have
been part of every Filipino household for generations, making JEC
one of the countrys leading match manufacturers.

The JAKA Equities Corporation (JEC) is one of the companies of

JAKA Investments Corporation (JIC). In 1978, it was first called
EMI Eurasia Match Incorporated. The company was then owned by
the Philippine Match Corporation (PHIMCO), another safety match
manufacturer.
The company is now owned by the Enrile family. In 1994, Eurasia
Match Inc. was changed to JAKA Equities Corporation. Although it
is not written in the companys background and history but many
believed that the term JAKA is derived from the names of Juan
Ponce Enriles children Jack and Katrine Enrile hence the name
JaKa. The establishment of JEC is composed of all manufacturing
operations within their group: match manufacturing, marketing and
distribution, and food processing.

Raw materials
Woods used to make matchsticks are mainly from other countries
such as Germany and Russia but JAKA Equities also have sources
from Cebu and places in Mindanao. Their requirements for woods
are within standard and must be porous enough to absorb various
chemicals, and strong enough to withhold the bending forces when
the match is lit. They should also be straight-grained and easy
to work, so that they may be readily cut into sticks. The company
also has a supplier that makes splints which are ready to be

partly dipped
also known as
chemicals for
and transmits

in chemical to make the match head. Splints are

the matchstick. Each has a head, where the
combustions are contained; tinder, which picks up
the flame, and a handle.

Once the matchsticks are formed, they are soaked in ammonium

phosphate, which is a fire retardant. This prevents the stick
from smoldering after the match has gone out. Afterwards, the
sticks are also dipped into some kind of chemical to avoid molds
setting into them when they are placed in the market. During
manufacture, the striking ends of the matchsticks are dipped in
hot paraffin wax. This provides a small amount of fuel to
transfer the flame from the burning chemicals on the tip to the
matchstick itself. Once the paraffin burns off, the ammonium
phosphate in the matchstick prevents any further combustion.
The tip contains mainly of mixture of phosphorus and potassium
chloride and 10 more chemical ingredients
After the matchsticks are formed they are now packed into boxes.
JAKA Equities produces two types of matches the Household match
and the Standard match. The household match is held in a same
matchbox but only bigger in size and the materials that compose
the box is different from the ones found in Standard matches. The
blue paper that we can see at the back of the Standard matches is
mainly imported from Russia. The company decided to color their
matches blue to avoid stains and to provide the matches with a
better look even after everyday use. The matchbox has an outer
box, which provides enclosure and striking surface at the sides;
and an inner box, which houses the splints.
Even though the company uses second-hand machines from Germany
they perform at par with the companys needs. Machines that are
already obsolete in other countries may still be productive here
in the Philippines.

Production and Management

With a population of 292 employees in JAKA Equities Corporation
in Magallanes, Agusan del Norte the resident manager holds a very
tight job of securing an efficient shifting schedule every day.
They have three shifts every 24 hours in a 24-day per month of
operation from morning, night and graveyard hours (7 AM to 3 PM,
3 PM to 11 PM and 11 PM to 7 AM respectively). Every shift
comprises of 52-60 workforce producing one to two brands
depending on the amount of production needed by the company at a
particular time and at a particular trend. The company boasts a

production of 1600 cartons a day containing 120 packets each and

a production ratio of 704 packets per minute.
The JEC Quality Assurance Division periodically monitors and
reviews the production process. It checks the splints, match
sticks, and match boxes ensuring that every product is compliant
by the standards set by JEC.
JEC is mainly responsible for the equity itself and JDI or JAKA
Distributions Incorporated is for sales and distribution of their
products. Many factors are considered in production and
distribution such as natural calamities, holidays outside the
country and critical weather conditions (Snow, heavy rain and
hailstorms). At one point, the production manager even ordered
raw materials that is good for 6 months given that matches are
composed of flammable and explosive materials that are banned in
entering the country during the election and campaigning phase.

The company mostly employs engineers. Surprisingly they currently

dont have an Industrial Engineer at their disposal given the
nature of their work but is said to be welcoming graduates of the
courses involved in business and production field or simply
students looking for an On the Job Training.
