Teachers: Each year I am blessed with an amazing English teacher who helps me
become a stronger reader and writer. Im sure there were many times they had
absolutely no idea that what they were saying or doing before a classroom of
students would have the effect that it did. But sometimes, in the smallest of ways,
and totally unplanned, it did. I am very grateful for what they have taught me to be
the writer and learner I am today
My mom: I live with my mom, so she is really hard on me when it comes to school
work. She has really pushed me in the right direction as she read some of my
papers, and when I was younger we would read together. When my mother and I
read together it taught me how I could have a love for reading outside of school.
Going to the bookstore once a week to get books to read that week before bedtime
was an activity I enjoyed doing with my mother. After getting home from school
every day I would get into bed with my mother and read a book to her or with her,
and at the end she would ask me questions about the book.

My home was a very special place which was significant in shaping my literacy
narrative (the kitchen table). This is because my mom wanted to make sure I stayed
on top of my work, so at home she had me read and she quizzed me on the context
of the book.

My home was a very special place which was significant in shaping my literacy
narrative (in particularly the kitchen table). This is because my mom wanted to
make sure I stayed on top of my work, so at home she had me read and she quizzed
me on the context of the book. I am very grateful for her doing this with me every
night during the school year because I was disciplined in knowing what to look for
while I was reading. Also, during the summer, my mother would put me in summer
camp from elementary school till sixth grade and we had summer reading, so at
camp we would read for thirty minutes Monday through Thursday every week.

Throughout the research for this project I have discovered how some things are
easier to find rather than others. My dads side of the family is what usually comes
up because of my last name; however, I am closer to my moms side of the family.
This is a challenge because I have to look even harder for things. The information I
have found so far has really helped me understand my true family history and
uncover things I did not know before. For instance, my grandmother told me there
was only one elementary, Jr. High and High school while she was growing up;
however, I found out there were two but African Americans were only allowed to
attend one of them. I never really realized my grandmother did grow up on slavery
and it is so hard to believe because she does not act like she was born during that
time.

Dear mom,
I hope you are enjoying your day. I am writing to inform you that I will not be coming
home this optional weekend. I believe since I will be a college freshman in the fall
and the time here is supposed to prepare me for the fall, I should start getting used

to not coming home every other weekend. I know you have prepared me to achieve
everything I need to get done and I am already focused and driven to succeed in
college. Dont think of this as my goodbye because I will be home in a few weeks.
Think of this as me becoming more independent. Make sure you have my food
ready when I come home in August.
With love,
Jaylaan
Hey girl! So I was going to come home this weekend to be a part of your birthday
surprise and go out of town with you, but I decided to stay here. There is so much
going on in charlotte this weekend and uptown is going to be lit. If you want to see
me you should come up here for the weekend.

In Portfolio Keeping I have learned so far about the type of portfolios and the one we
will be using is a portfolio for learning. A portfolio for learning, also called a process
portfolio demonstrates learning. It reflects the journey more so than the destination.
I also learned the principles of portfolio keeping: choice, variety and reflection.
These three principles are needed to have a successful portfolio. Choice is what the
portfolio keeper chooses to include in his or her portfolio. Variety is strengths,
interests, and the portfolio should reflect the differences between the two. Finally,
reflection helps you look at your work differently, as a whole rather than as a series
of separate assignments or projects. The things I have learned can compare to our
reading The house on mango street, and how Sandra Cisneros did not hold back
with her selection of vignettes and her reflection at the end of the story.

Out of the three statements from Wilson Mizner, Zora Neale Hurston, and Neil
Armstrong, I feel as though what Zora Neale Hurston stated speaks to me more
than the others. She said, Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying
with a purpose. I believe this statement is accurate because when one does
research it is because he or she is curious about what is going on pertaining a
certain subject or topic. One lets his or herself poke into different information to find
out what they need to know. No research is easy. There will be twist turns and stops
as to finding information to support the topic.

While growing up I have done numerous research assignments. I have figured out
what I need to do to have a successful research assignment. I learned planning the
research out ahead of time is needed because you never know what may come up
to interfere with the research. I also learned to practice presentation in advance, so

you do not just read off a paper or slide show. Another thing I learned was to make
sure in group research assignments to ensure everyone does their part because
what is terrible is to have to do a whole research assignment by myself.

I feel as though in our academic, work, social, and in virtually all aspects of our life
there are sometimes errors which help us to be better at what we do today. I
remember in school one day I forgot I had a paper due that afternoon in my last
block class. I tried to write what I thought was a good paper, but I turned it in and
there were many errors. When I got it back my teacher simply wrote on my paper
Next time just do not turn it in. This hurt me inside because I felt like a failure.
This taught me to never procrastinate because your best work does not come out.
In order to have error free work is to have multiple eyes read your work to catch
your mistakes.

Coming to grandmas house was something everyone in our whole family enjoyed
because we knew that her apple pie was something to look forward to. She had a
special recipe that only certain people in our family knew and I hope to one day be
passed the recipe. Not only was grandma a good baker, she also loved to ride
motorcycles with her husband. They took trips to the beach to ride down the strip
every summer just as a tradition. She always rode on the back of grandpas bike
with the hope to, one day, have her own to race him on the dirt roads behind their
house.
