For my semester long topic I wanted to pick a topic that would raise eyebrows
and stray away from normal topics. I felt as though rape was a very controversial
topic to talk about due to the many aspects of rape. In order to get insight and
different perspectives on my topic I interviewed Krystal Tillman in study hall. Krystal
is a UTOP mentor who is majoring in psychology and social work. I felt as though
Krystal would be the perfect person to interview since she would have some
background information from her majors.
To begin my interview I showed Krystal my project proposal and explained
what I hoped to talk about and accomplish in my project. Krystal looked at each key
point I wanted to discuss in my project and presented her thoughts on each point.
Since she is a psychology major she has two different theories on the psychology
behind rape. She believes that people may rape because they were molested or
physically abused as a child and she also believes that there could just be a
chemical imbalance. While I agree about her first theory I had never thought about
there actually being something wrong with someones chemical balance causing
them to behave in a violent manner. Another point Krystal made in my interview
with her was her perspective on men being raped by women. Krystal believes that
this occurs often but that it is less documented because of how males perceive
rape. She feels as though if a man was raped by a women that people would either

not believe the male or that they would feel emasculated. I totally agree with
Krystals view on males being raped by women and feel that when I continue my
research I will find statistics and interviews that back this information up.
The last key point we discussed was falsely accused rapes. Krystal was able
to share a personal story of her cousin being falsely accused by a girl that at the
time was one of her best friends. The girl became pregnant by Krystals cousin was
fearful of what her parents would do/think so she lied and said she was raped. After
the police investigated the case they found out that Krystals cousin was innocent. I
was surprised to hear that Krystal knew a false rape story and that the people
involved were so close to her. I could relate to her story in that one of my friends
was falsely accused.
Overall the interview I had with Krystal was very helpful. She gave me new
perspectives that will be helpful in my project and advance my research. This
interview also gave me a resource to revert back to and ask questions when I get to
difficult parts of my project.
