Session 1- Engage

Concept: Scientists use their knowledge on reversible and irreversible change in

order to conduct effective research and experiments.
Changes to materials can be reversible, including melting, freezing, evaporating, or irreversible, including burning and
rusting (VCSSU077)

Activity:

Describe what is happening in cards shown (real world irreversible and

reversible changes)
Individual mind map (irreversible and reversible)
Watch YouTube clip Reversible and irreversible changes the science video
Add information to mind map
Complete essential questions

Essential Questions:
1. Why is it important to learn about reversible and irreversible changes to
materials?
2. How will learning about reversible and irreversible changes to materials make
be a better scientist?
3. How can learning about reversible and irreversible changes help improve our
recycling habits?
4. What are some changes of state in water? Are these reversible or
irreversible?
Key words learnt:
Reversible
Irreversible

Session 2- Explore
Concept: Make predictions, observations, record and interpret the effect of
temperature on the changes of state in water.
Solids, liquids and gases behave in different ways and have observable properties that help to classify
them (VCSSU076)

Activity:

Mostly melting experiment

PROE- formative assessment
Evocative evaporation demonstration

Here, students explore the concept of particles making up substances and the idea
that temperature changes particles form which results in the substance itself
changing from liquid to solid, or solid to liquid.
Key words learnt:

Particles
Substance

Session 3- Explain

Concept: Investigating the changes in substances and weather these are physical
or chemical
Activity:

Venn Diagram Chemical vs Physical changes

How do I know when its chemical change? Brainstorm/ poster
Conduct variety of experiments (chemical and physical)
Sort which was which and why

Here, students are extending their knowledge on particles and substance change.
They will learn the difference between a chemical change and a physical change
and will relate this back to learnt knowledge on particles.
Key words learnt:

Chemical change
Physical Change

Session 4- Elaborate
Concept: The effect of water temperature on physical or chemical changes
Activity:

Fiz whiz detectives

-Comparing the reactions of fiz tablets in ice cold, warm and room
temperature water.
-Challenge: Students are detectives and to solve the crime all evidence needs
to be collected (fiz tablet completely dissolved). They need to experiment and
discover how to dissolve all the fiz tablets via trial and error.
-They must record each trial they do and explain what they saw.

Here, students are using their knowledge on the effect of temperature on particles
to experiment with water temperature and its effect on other substances. They will
be elaborating on the concepts learnt previously and reinforcing this knowledge.

Session 4- Evaluate
Concept: Investigating irreversible and reversible changes to substances found in
cooking and burning.

investigating irreversible changes, for example, rusting, burning and cooking (VCSSU076)

Activity:

Cooking Venn diagram (irreversible vs reversible changes in cooking)

Writing script for next lessons filming

Student will be using their knowledge to create a script for the final assessment
video. The video it to incorporate all concepts learnt and the key words. They must
show their understanding of these concepts through the explanation of cooking
experiments.

Session 5- Evaluate
Concept: Investigating irreversible and reversible changes to substances found in
cooking and burning.
Activity:

Popcorn making
Meringue making
Filming master chef (final assessment)

Students will be conducting 2 cooking experiments. These will feature in

their MasterChef video, which will be their final assessment. Students are
to explain what is happening throughout the experiment, using scientific
terms and concepts.
