classroom and say a word that describes their role in their community , create a
continual movement to represent this and connect some part of their body to the
previous person. I will lead by sharing one word of how I impact community and
create a continual movement of what that represents. From there, scholars will come
to the middle of the classroom say their one word of impact and connect one part of
their body to me and so forth thus creating a community interaction machine. This
activity will provide scholars with opportunity for creativity, innovation and for
assessment of theatric comfortability.
Introductory Activity/Experiential (20 minutes) Each scholar will be split up into 4
groups determined by what is printed on their card. Instruct each group in live
postcard activity. Instruct them to think of a scenario that affects their daily life and
imagine they are writing the post card to a government official. Groups will have 5
minutes to plan. Have group members act out the scenario while one group member
narrates, by saying Dear Mayor Have group members act out the scenario in full as
the narrator continues. Each group will get a turn to share their live post card.
Mini-Lesson (1 hour)Watch theatre of oppressed event on youtube. Set up
cooperation contract for event expectations. Set roles for event such as: greeters,
decorators, ribbon cutters, tour givers, table hosts, caterer/food communication and
emcees. Have scholars brainstorm list of roles and assign people to each group. When
roles are assigned scholars will walk over to Dunlap to set up for event. They will use
pre-placed tables and chairs and set up for a crowd 150 people. They will set up
tables for caterers as well as guests. Have scholars set up signs directing guests to
location and signs for parking options. Have scholars decorate as planned by
decorating committee which will include things like table decorations, stage props,
and welcome banners in multiple languages.
Demonstration/Exercise(3 hours) When event starts, scholars will assume roles and
go about welcoming and making community guests feel comfortable and celebrated.
Emcees will announce theatre of the oppressed after first 30 minutes of mingle and
appetizers. Guests will be invited to put ideas of scenarios towards community and
school revitalization into hat. When 5-10 ideas are collected, community theatre will
commence! Emcee will choose two scenarios at random and teacher explain theatre
of oppressed to guests who will soon become participants. Emcee will recruit 5-10
volunteers for each scenario, the first time in 10 minutes, actors will interact with
what they believe scenario will be like. Second time, actors will interact but audience
members will be able to interrupt and jump on stage if there is something happening
theyd like to change or swap roles with. Each scenario will play through like this 4
times or until audience members decide the issue has been worked out on stage.
Event will commence with ribbon cutting of mural and Future Wall where
community guests will post their dreams for Rainier Beachs future on post-it notes
as they leave event.
Applied Work Lessons: Coming together to create event
Metaphor/ Conclusion: Scholars will chant good job for community guests at end

identity. Scholars will gather in Dunlap classroom for debriefing. Each scholar will
act out a type of person in our community based on age or cultural
demographic.Scholars will guess who the person is and then will engage in
discussion of 3 improvements for each described person. Assign scribes each time a
new type of person gets acted out, instruct scholars to be as creative but culturally
sensitive as possible. After activity, have scholars write list of 10 positive things they
didn't know about themselves before this class. Then have scholars post lists in
classroom and take pictures with phones to post on personal social media platforms.
Have them write on social media platforms these are my 10 things , what are
yours? #improveself #communityartist #imatter. In this way, the project continues to
build community and allow others to create positive self-expression.
