Lesson Description: To begin this lesson, we will discuss the concepts of orienteering. Simply
put it is a navigational sport that uses compasses and maps to get to certain points as directed by
the instructor. For this lesson, there will be different points set up around the grounds
surrounding our school and the students will be using the navigation on their cell phones.
Incorporating cell phone use should increase student motivation and allow all students to
participate, as their only needs to be 1-2 cell phones per group and they will be able to access wifi, leading to less concern about data. Prior to setting students up for their own activity, I will
demonstrate proper orienteering for them. I will also describe what should happen if they should
get lost within the activity, therefore they can see the behaviors and the consequences. They will
also be working in small groups so they will have social interaction while working on a realworld activity, leading to higher knowledge gain. In regards to Moore, the dialogue is the entire
activity in which they are navigating with their group. They will learn not only through their
effort in finding locations but also through discussion with group members. Learning will
happen through the individuals as well as their learning networks that include the instructor, their
classmates, the navigation systems, and any material online relating to the given task.
How to Access: Navigational points will be posted on Google Classroom. They will use
Google Maps for navigating.
Estimated Completion Time:
At each navigational location, there will be a small item for students to gather (items will
be color coded so each group can only pick up one from each location)
Teachers will check in with students throughout the activity for any extra help or pieces
of encouragement/feedback
At the end of the first class period, students will put all collected items in a bag for
safekeeping and pick up where they left off next class period
At the end of the activity, students will have collected all or most of the items and will
receive evaluation
Follow-up activity will include a storyline and clues along with various map locations
students will receive feedback almost immediately after talking with the instructor. Summative
assessment will occur at completion of the lesson. Feedback will be provided during the next
class period as well as found on Google Classroom.
