ART
Candidates will use the three weeks between the date of question paper issue and date of examination to
complete their preparatory studies. Candidates will use the 3-hour examination to complete their final artwork.
Candidates are not allowed to continue work on their preparatory studies during the 3-hour examination.
For the 3-hour examination, candidates will be supplied with drawing paper. Candidates should provide their own
drawing boards, drawing pins, paints (a quick-drying medium should be used for the examination), brushes, ink,
pens, erasers, water jars, fixative or varnishes and other drawing and painting materials.
Candidates who wish to use tracing papers for design outcomes or as a printing/collage should bring their own
supply. The tracing papers must be completely blank and cannot be used to trace the preparatory studies
directly.
The drawing papers supplied are of A3 size (42 cm by 30 cm) and A2 size (42 cm by 60 cm) for GCE O- and
A-Levels. However, candidates are allowed to use their own paper of a different colour, texture and size,
subject to a minimum size of 42 cm by 30 cm (A3 size) and maximum size of 42 cm by 60 cm (A2 size).
Candidates must adhere to this minimum and maximum size in order to avoid compromising their exam work
during shipping.
Candidates who use their own paper have to submit the papers to the Chief Presiding Examiner for verification
at the start of the examination. Papers must not have been worked on prior to the examination such as
previously coloured, dyed and/or textured by the candidate. Papers must be entirely blank except for the
candidates name, centre and index number, which should be written on the top right hand corner of the front
of the paper.
Candidates may use any medium they consider suitable for their work. However, candidates are reminded to
use a quick-drying medium for painting to ensure that their work is dry before submission. A fixative should be
applied if the painting or drawing is likely to smudge.
O-Level Private Candidates
Candidates offering 6031/1 (Design Study) may bring their own paper (e.g. commercially bought coloured or
textured paper etc.) if they choose not to use the plain white paper supplied. However, these papers must not
be smaller than the minimum size of 42 cm by 30 cm (A3 size) and no larger than the maximum size of 42
cm by 60 cm (A2 size). The paper must not be pre-cut or prepared in specific shapes etc. prior to the
examination.
Candidates must submit only materials in two-dimensional form in both the preparatory studies and the final
examination piece. All materials must be securely and permanently fixed to the preparatory studies.
Candidates are not permitted to remove any material(s) from their preparatory studies during the examination.
The preparatory studies must not be mounted, framed or covered in plastic. All preparatory studies should be
either drawn directly or securely pasted onto A3 sheets of paper. Dangerous or hazardous materials must not be
included in the preparatory studies. Such materials may be confiscated by the Subject Supervisor based on
his/her judgment, to ensure the safety of all candidates and their examination submissions.
Candidates must produce their preparatory studies and all materials for verification and approval by the
Subject Supervisor before entering the examination room. Candidates who bring in materials or preparatory
studies not verified and approved by the Subject Supervisor will be deemed to have contravened examination
rules (refer to paragraph 6).
Candidates are permitted to bring the preparatory studies into the examination room. However, candidates
may not copy or remove items from the preparatory studies to insert or transfer onto their final examination
piece. Candidates are not permitted to bring in loose materials (e.g. photographs, print-outs, magazine
cuttings, small pieces of their own drawings that are separate from the preparatory studies, etc.) with the

studies during the three hour Art examination.

centre/index number and question number on the top right hand corner on the front of the preparatory studies.
The sheets must also be securely fastened on the top left-hand corner of the preparatory studies with the
