Message From Presidente Dayton

We Build the Kingdom of God by Baptizing Families

We have just completed our interviews with the amazing missionaries of the Spain
Barcelona Mission--all 177 (that includes 16 mini-missionaries)! While it is demanding
and always leaves me exhausted, there is nothing I enjoy more. I absolutely treasure
the privilege of sitting with you and feeling the power and strength of your spirits. We
feel so privileged to work side by side with the noble and great spirits in this mission.
The interviews were a choice experience.
We finished the interviews in Mallorca and while Hermana Dayton flew back to
prepare for the Mission Leadership Council (Concilio), I was invited to attend a
baptism in Inca the next day. I stayed over and had the privilege of participating in
the very special baptismal service of the Gonzalez family, a father, mother, 13 year
old daughter and 8 year old daughter. I was even honored to baptize the 13 year
old--a sweet and sacred memory. As the missionaries were singing "Families Can be
Together Forever" in the program, the mother was deeply moved and tears flowed
freely down her face. The Holy Ghost touched her heart and confirmed the
truthfulness of this doctrine of eternal families. After the baptism, the dear 13 year old
tried to share her testimony but was so emotional, she couldn't even speak. The
presence of the Spirit was felt powerfully in that beautiful service. The family was
challenged to prepare to go to the House of the Lord in one year and be sealed for
time and all eternity.
I have thought a lot about the service and the powerful principle of baptizing
families. Elders and Hermanas, all spirits are special to our Heavenly Father and all
baptisms are incredibly important, but there is something particularly important that
takes place when a family is baptized. First, a potential eternal family is created.
Second, the likelihood of those recently baptized staying active is much higher,
because the family will come to Church together and reinforce and strengthen each
other. They don't have to make that cultural adjustment alone. Third, another
Melchizedek Priesthood-paying tithe payer becomes a member of the ward and

strengthens the body of the priesthood while his wife strengthens the Relief Society and
their children the youth. Finally, Zion is strengthened and the ward grows and becomes
more spiritually powerful.
Families are central to the Lord's plan. As Preach My Gospel says, the gospel of Jesus
Christ blesses families and, enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the
grave. This glorious doctrine, first shared with the world by the Prophet Joseph Smith,
makes it clear that families can be united now and in eternity. The Proclamation on the
Family states that, Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded
upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Bringing all of the family into the Church
unifies them instead of dividing them which too often happens. The Restored Gospel
blesses and helps husbands and wives, parents and children as they strive to develop
stronger relationships and spiritual strength in their families. Simply put, families are the
most important social unit in time and in eternity. President Harold B. Lee gives us
important perspective in his statement, The most important of the Lord's work you will
ever do will be within the walls of your own homes.
Preach My Gospel succinctly admonishes us to strive to FIND AND TEACH FAMILIES
who can support one another in living the gospel. It is important for us to address the
importance of the family with those whom we meet each day. Most will find it a topic
in which they are very interested. We can make a statement like, There is nothing
more important to us than our families. Some missionaries have told me that they are
sometimes a little intimidated when they see a family--they are afraid or uncomfortable
approaching them. If you are prayerful and actively seek to contact families, the Lord
will give you the courage to do so because He is very interested in bringing families
back to His presence.
It is my prayer that we will actively look for opportunities to contact, seek out, and
actively preach the gospel to families. Think about what the gospel does for you and
your family. Knowing that, and knowing your great love for the people, seek to bless
their lives with that same endowment, the greatest of all family gifts--the Restored
Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Con gratitud por familias eternas,
President Merril T Dayton

Message From Hermana Dayton

Security vs. Anxiety

Security is structuring our lives around that which cannot be taken away or
destroyed. There is a deep longing for security in every ones heart. Many people look for
security in temporal things that perish--money, possessions, etc. The reality is these things
that we spend on for security actually produce insecurity and anxiety. In Proverbs 11:28 it
says, "He that trusteth in His riches shall fall" As members of the church, we realize that
security does not come from material possessions but security comes in our relationship
with our Heavenly Father and patterning our lives after the Savior. We know that security
comes as we develop lasting relationships with family and friends. It comes as
we develop our personal character and skills. As we focus on what cannot be taken
away or destroyed we have greater insight into life and we are able to create a vision
for our future. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is truly what gives us our security.
Jesus "went about doing good" Acts 10:38 The Savior taught, "For whosoever will
save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it."
Luke 9:24. President Monson has said, "I believe the Savior is telling us that unless we lose
ourselves in service to others, there is little purpose to our own lives. Those who live only
for themselves eventually shrivel up and ...lose their lives, while those who lose
themselves in service to others grow and flourish--and in effect save their lives." Ensign
November 2009. In interviews over the past few weeks, I have been inspired over and
over again as you have shared the things you are learning in the mission field. So many
of you have commented on how happy you are, that you have grown and progressed
and have realized that happiness comes as you are serving others. Another word for
security is confidence. President and I have been so touched as we have seen your
confidence increase in the mission field. We have also observed how radiant your
countenances are...that you have taken on the image of the Savior. We have noticed
that many of you have "found yourselves" here in the mission field as you have worked
hard to bring others to Christ.

We can apply security to our lives as missionaries by:

--Focusing on our personal character development
--Serving our companion, investigators, ward members and others
--Depending on the Gospel, our relationship with the Lord and the Savior, for our
happiness
--Spending our time developing personal relationships with others
--Investing our time in bringing others to Christ
By being secure in our testimony of the gospel, we can show others the firm
foundation of the church which is Jesus Christ, and invite them to base their lives on His
atonement.
Much love,
Hermana Dayton

questions
about
living
prophets, about baptisms for
the dead, etc.

We had a discussion with one

of our investigators about the
Bible vs. the Book of Mormon.
He really knew his stuff and was
struggling with the idea of the
Book of Mormon and Joseph
Smith. After a loooooong time
of debating, we eventually
read with him Moroni 10:3-5. He
questioned this and asked "If
this book is true, then why
would it be trying to convince
me to read it to see if it's true.
The Bible doesn't do that." We
had been there too long and
we're getting no where, but
something came to my mind
right when he said that. I asked
him if he had ever heard of
Carmelita's before. Of course
he said no, so I explained that
it's a super delicious dessert

that my mom makes. I

proceeded to try my best to
explain how much I love it and
what it tastes like, but then I
pointed out that he would
NEVER truly know what they
taste like unless he TRIED IT for
himself. He stayed totally
quiet... Then I brought up that I
had never heard of, seen, or
tasted Nigerian "Foo Foo"
before in my life until that day.
He had just given it to us during
the lesson. The Elders had
talked about it, I had seen
videos of them eating it, and
my companion told me what it
tasted like, but in reality I didn't
know if I liked "Foo Foo" or not
until I TRIED IT myself. After I
brought
this
up,
he
immediately turned around.
He said, yes. You're totally right.
I need to try this book for
myself.

A Message from the Ayudantes

Elders and Hermanas,
This week is the "Invite the World Week.
They will be seven days never to be forgotten.
This past week, the missions of Madrid and Malaga challenged us to an invitation contest - who can invite the
most amount of people to be baptized in one week. We said to ourselves, "El Faro missionaries are the best on
the earths great face! Missionaries of El Faro could invite all of Spain, or even the whole world to be baptized
in a week! Thus, the Invite the World week was inaugurated.
Now, what exactly does this Invite the World Week mean?
It means we extend at least 15 baptismal invitations to any number of Gods children this week, every
companionship! Thats over 1300 baptismal invitations in the Spain Barcelona Mission!
The Apostle Simon Peter invited 3000 people to be baptized in one day! Every single one of them accepted.
Wilford R. Woodruff, Apostle of this dispensation, once invited all of the listeners to be baptized after a
preaching. Then he straightway went to a pool to baptize the seven that accepted, amongst them a constable that
was sent to arrest him. Jesus the Messiah, when visiting the Nephites, invited the whole nation to be baptized 8
times! What is OUR potential?
We submit that there is much more in us than we think. We have been promised that we can do all things in
Christ who strengthens us.
In order to help us accomplish this goal, we will:

Add the key indicator Baptismal Invitations Extended not necessarily accepted to our other key
indicators this week.

Set a weekly goal of baptismal invitations to be extended right now (it needs to be at least 15) and a
daily goal of invitations every nightly planning.

Invite all of our investigators to be baptized in every first lesson and re-invite in every subsequent lesson - Every invitation counts!

Have the word baptism continuously on our lips.

We are highly animated for this great week! The part about the Madrid and Malaga Missions challenging us to
that contest was actually made up. It is not true. We really just wanted to challenge ourselves.
This is a worthy cause. We promise that as we push ourselves to invite everyone, the Lord will take away our
fears, qualify us more for this beautiful work and help us stay determined on our purpose of preaching
repentance and baptizing converts.
Elders and Hermanas if we do these things, this won't only be an
Invite the World Week it will be an InWHITE the World Week!
